I've installed 100's of these, they are nearly always used to isolate a piece of machinery as part of a Lock Off Tag Out routine (LOTO) and the keys held securely and separate from the machine so it can be worked on safely, also fitted to machinery guards so if the guard is opened the machine stops. I was on a coarse once with a maintenance from the Ford UK body plant at Dagenham. He told me that he had a job checking belt tension on one of the HUGE body panel presses. When I say those presses were huge, I mean that to check the belt tension he had to climb onto the lower pully (which had something like a dozen belts) with the upper pully above his head. He'd obviously locked it out with his own padlock and danger tag. He said he finished the job and had just got off the machine (I should add that the pullies were below floor level) when the press started up! Some twat of a foreman had cut the lock off because he didn't like the down time. It sounds too incredible, but this person swears it happened.

The 2 screws on the front holding the lock in place are exactly the same as the screws holding the light switches to the wall in many UK prisons ( well they were 20 something years ago when I was last inside). It was a fun little exercise making a tool to undo them that didn't bend the little pin in the centre or scuff the surface in any way so as not to let it look like it had been tampered with, made for a handy stash point for a little pot. Though you still needed to rub in some camouflaging paste ( a mix of toothpaste, ash and dirt ) to make it realy look like it hadn't been touched in ages. Use to use a similar mix to hide the 2 strands of wire coming from the light to the radio so I didn't have to pay for batteries ( before they started letting us have things like TVs in our cells). Had to score a couple of tiny channels for the 2 single strands of wire hence the need for the camouflaging paste to hide them. Lol it's funny the things that trigger memories of the stuff we use to get up to. Ah the good old days when I were a lad ( jk) it was definitely not good days it's days I am far from proud of but it's still fascinating some of the ingenious things people come up with when locked up. A read of pretty much any POW story will prove that. The things they came up with in colditz during wwii are astounding from hiding places to constructing a glider in a hidden room. The glider was as never flown as the prison was liberated before it was completely ready but a team reconstructed it and tested it ( without a crew) in 2012 proving that it would have worked. The glider was made out of bed sheets and porage showing as I say the amazing ingenuity of those locked up.

I agree! That would be a cool lock cylinder for anything "stylistic" it just looks cool as hell. The SCARY part here is that it's an industrial lock and the tools to pick it are an offset screwdriver and a punch.
@karnalunea11223 жыл бұрын
I think that would make a amazing build, maybe some weaker springs, but amazing with the industrial look. An regarding the tools needed, i think it keeps the honest people out. The other people most likely dont belong there. If it is on some piece of equipment it most likely is there to prevent untrained people from just using that equipment. It may even be for maintenance, would be bad if the power is on when you are upside down in the machine. And if they see the key in the switch they may know someone is working on the machine. The possibilities are many.
@Murgoh3 жыл бұрын
@@karnalunea1122 Yup, these things are not designed for pick resistance. On the other hand they must be very secure against operation with the wrong key, even when worm, as they are meant to protect against accidental, not intentional, activation when someone is working on the machine. If someone willingly wanted to activate things without permission they could just unscrew the cover and turn the cam with a screwdriver or something anyway. I think the locks can be made with the pins spaced differently around the circumference (they are not evenly spaced) which will do nothing for pick resistance but would be very effective in preventing the lock from being operated with the wrong key. The "blade" in the center of the key might also be shaped differently for different keys which would prevent the wrong key from even being inserted in the lock.
@foxman83443 жыл бұрын
@@mattfleming86 It's not too scary considering the intended purpose of these is to just prevent accidentally turning on or off a machine that could cause damage to machinery or people. It's not really to keep people out. Their primary purpose is to keep people from getting killed due to inattentiveness. A mechanic comes in, takes the key out while he's working on the machine so a worker doesn't come back from lunch and turn him into paste kind of thing.

I’ve seen them used a lot in industry, they can be used where the key is taken out of the electrical switch (killing the machine) and the key is the put into another retaining lock thus allowing access to parts of the machine. The key is only removable from the 2nd lock when the access gate etc is closed thus stopping someone getting squished. I’ve seen many varieties of them, some with solenoids on the electrical side so the key can only be removed when the safety electrical system is healthy, systems where you put one key in and have multiple slave keys all of which have to be returned before the main key can be withdrawn, locks with sliding bolts on the side so the bolt has to be in before allowing the key to be released. I think the keys are pretty unique hence the keys and locks have to be made to order.

According to the wiring diagram on the side each of the two switches would have 6 possible wires going to it. Each switch would have two identical circuits with one "input" and two "outputs". When the switch is not active one "output" would be on and the other would be off. When the switch is active the outputs would simultaneously change state. Known as double redundancy.

And if you look closely at 6:53, you can notice the differently colored plungers, the front ones being red (=NC) and the back ones being black (=NO). Various versions in the UK of these we have giant Tibbe with 5 angles and 8 discs, no false notches though. I have an interesting variation that has 3 KA locks linked to a 4th different lock with a switch on it also. You have to put all 3 KA keys in to turn on and release the 4th key. It's a Sick IE1000, used to use them where I used to work, on a properly designed interlock system pick resistance is no big issue as if the switches are operated out of sequence it should still be detected, the equipment shut down and a fault alarm raised due to the out of sequence operation, they're designed more for robustness and reliability than pick resistance. It's not a simple case of the key being in or out, there will be another station and only when the key is returned to the master station will the machine operate. So Remove key from station A, that kills power to the machine, take key to machine, insert it, that unlocks the machine BUT only if power has been removed otherwise a solenoid prevents operation. Once machine is open key is retained until the door is properly closed and locked again, power is only restored once key is returned to the main station, (there are other topographies as well).

I am a canadian electrician (retired), but I have never seen a lockout like that before, and I would not trust it. It's obvious just by looking at it, that you don't need a key, but can "pick" it quite easily and quick with just 2 screwdrivers. Any equipment I ever worked on is locked out with a padlock at the mcc or a disconnect, or some equipment have a lockable guard that either blocks the on button, or holds.the stop button in. The only other alternative is toggle switches which can be locked out by fastening a locking device on the toggle then using a padlock so the device can't be removed. You can also lock a breaker panel, or use individual breaker locks similar to toggle switch locks. Your best defence is the tag you attach after locking it out, and the threat of beating the living shit out of anyone that tries to remove your lock. (I actually had to do that once. Caught a guy breaking into a locked panel with a crowbar after I got a shock, and wailed on him with a 4" 2x4)
