My mom died of alcoholism about a year ago, 3 months after my first baby was born (her first grand). She grew up with a catholic lens where drinking is okay. She loves Jesus but ended up using alcohol as a way to cope with stress and it took her life away and robbed us of a lot of good possible memories with our mother. She taught me about Jesus and now I am a seventh day Adventist. Adventist don’t drink as a form of temperance and they keep the sabbath as a day of rest. My relationship with Jesus and rest on the Sabbath is one way I deal with stress. I think you guys made a great decision to not drink alcohol. You will never regret it! You guys are awesome thanks for sharing your walk with the Lord as a family!

As a Catholic, I am very sorry to hear about your mother's struggle with alcohol and will pray for her soul. I would like to clarify that while drinking alcohol in and of itself is not considered sinful in Catholicism, the faith encourages growth in the cardinal virtue of temperance. Drinking to excess where you get drunk is considered a sin, is very much discouraged, and would need to be confessed. Not all Catholics drink alot just because it is permitted as a matter of free will. (See the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1809). God bless!

@@KatiePitre1 hi Katie, I am very aware of what Catholics believe and it creates major stumbling blocks for followers in the faith like my mother. It is important to look at the Bible and what the Bible says about drinking and the context. Grape juice without alcohol was called wine in the Hebrew translation. So when the Bible talks about the evil of strong drink it is the context we can look for. Temperance and clinging to Christ. Some people can not simply have temperance if you grew up with an alcoholic parent you would understand the evils of alcohol. The priests of my Catholic Church could be found at the local bar restaurant and would finish off the wine after mass. It creates a stumbling block for believers that have that struggle and as Christian’s we should do nothing that creates a stumbling block to another. The confusion is why many never get over their addiction. Thankfully she accepted Christ in her last years of life, and the Bible says when we are dead we are asleep till Jesus comes so the catholic teaching of praying for the dead souls into heaven is not biblical. Thanks for your input, I grew up in the Catholic Church but found the teachings still left me struggling in sin till I found Christian’s that read the Bible and share their faith and kind works and don’t have lives that conflict with the truth.

Also the catholic form of confession is not inline with bible teaching the Bible tells us to call no man father but our father in heaven. Christ is able to intercede for each sinner that comes to him and asks for forgiveness. We need to confess our sins to one another and to Christ but a private confessional with an intermediary priest? Christ is our priest and God is our father.

But having said that there are many beautiful catholic people who are living up to the truth as they know it and I’m sure you are one of them! My grandmother is a beautiful catholic who loves Jesus. These are just some struggles I personally found with the church and some peace and freedom I found embracing another church that practices temperance in their baptismal vows as according to their understanding of bible truth. I’m sure there will be many beautiful Catholics in heaven and many beautiful Adventist and many Catholics and Adventists that sadly won’t be there and we will all be surprised! God bless you on your faith journey

I grew up in a home VERY against alcohol. I drank a tiny bit in my rebel years because my boyfriend/ then husband liked it. I never truly enjoyed it even though some of it was really good, and I definitely never got drunk. But I will never forget being in a place I could not believe I was in, and I was just so disgusted with myself and so convicted that I decided I would never drink a drop of alcohol again in my life. I have kept that vow for over 10 years and do not regret or miss it. I’d rather have the beautiful peace of walking in accord with the Holy Spirit than something that is unnecessary and only pleasing to my flesh. There are so many other things I can consume and enjoy!

I am not against it, but I don't even really want it. It is dehydrating to the body, it makes you thirsty and therefore it can make you want to drink more (hence that is why some people become alcoholics) and it dries up the skin and gives wrinkles. The Bible says that "wine is a mcker." Not sure where might be Proverbs...Oh Here it is. "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise." (Pr. 20:1) It is not even that healthy. Also, it adds to weight bc it is full of sugar and some wines even have arsenic in it. Yes, arsenic. It adds rolls to your stomach and it is so unnecessary... It has become such an idol to some people bc they think it adds class or makes you cool or interesting. It most ertainly does NOT in my opinion. I can live without it and I HAVE, but if/when I go to the spa, and they offer it, I will take some (very little) and then I ask for water. I am so glad alcohol is not my thing. It is my sisters' thing and they can't live without it. Ugh!

Soteriology was made very clear through me after years of struggling with who is right, when God showed me in the scripture he asks us to believe in Jesus to be saved, not a certain man's interpretation of scripture, and His salvation is available to anyone who will come to Him, which is also very clear in the Scripture.

We don´t have a christmast tree in our house, we do put the ligths and some decorations, we make the Christmas manger the central piece of the decors. But what I love the most is to have a birthday cake for Jesus, we sing for him, and read the story of his birthday and it keeps our mind in the importance of clelebrating HIM. Thank you for all the insite you share, you are a blessing. greetings from Argentina!

I grew up with a family the saw/drink alcohol occasionally without major issues, but my 3 adopted kids come from parents with alcohol and other addictions, so we as a family have decided to give up alcohol for the sake of our kids. I pray to God that he gives us the wisdom to be able to guide them through their teenage years to adulthood, so they never have to deal with issues as their biological parents did 🙏

This is so refreshing! You get it! We’re all Heavenly Fathers children, we’re all born into different circumstances throughout the world. Our journey back to Him will be unique to each of us but we may have the same goal and aspirations of living with Him again. Like you said there’s so much to learn but we need to unite and celebrate our similarities instead of all this division. The adversary wants us to be divided, God wants unity. We’re not just on earth to save ourselves but to bring as many of Gods children to enjoy those same blessings. This life is so very short compared to eternity. I love the multi-generational perspective, that’s realistic. Thank you!

It’s not the Lord giving you 11 kids it’s just the natural consequence of having sex. Not everyone can afford to have 11 kids or want to and that’s okay. Stop making something that isn’t a spiritual issue a spiritual issue. God is logical does he want someone to have 10 kids when they can’t put dinner in the table? This hyper literal fundamentalist way of viewing sex is so ignorant and putting people in bondage. If you see an unbeliever and kept having sex without contraception you’d still have 11 kids stop making it a God thing and stop pushing anti contraception nonsense towards the body of Christ. God will rebuke those that have kept having more and more kids that struggle to provide or meet the emotional needs of each child.

@@lelaninelson7200it is a spiritual matter since it is God who tells his children to be fruitful and multiply but He does not force anyone to do so, at the end of the day it’s a personal conviction and there’s absolutely anything wrong with letting God determine the size of your family, stop limiting God just because most Christians want to take the easier road

I love how you guys have made space for people who have changed in their thoughts and beliefs about certain things. I agree with Katie that there needs to be way more openness to have discussions like these among Christians. I’ve change drastically how I read scripture over the last 10years. I’m embarrassed by how I have used and read it in the past now having the knowledge that I do today. I think people are afraid to admit change of belief because if you can change your mind about one thing you can change your mind about anything. A lot of Christians are afraid to face those questions either out of fear of judgment from peers or fear of judgment from God. Good on you guys for starting a discussion like this. 👍🏼

Hi, guys! Love your podcast & how you bring us into your journey of examining what God's Word has to say about these subjects. I especially liked your perspective on living multi-generationally. I'm going to be thinking more about that. As a mom of 7 ages 15 to 4 with a home business, I have been through hard & overwhelming seasons, too. I would encourage you to take that multi-generational mindset & apply it to God's timing for when to welcome children. If you believe as His Word says that He opens & closes the womb, then there is freedom in trusting His timing of when to send babies. He is never early & He never makes a mistake. It may be an overwhelming season at this time to have another baby, but that same baby may be a blessing to you in old age or to their siblings, God's church & their communities in His greater plan that only He knows. Blessings!

I do believe your sleep training babies as early as 8 weeks old makes your fertility return faster postpartum. God created women's bodies to naturally have a break in fertility while breastfeeding babies (most of the impacted hormones are during the night). This is biologically normal and there are so many health benefits in spacing out children including allowing the mother to build up her nutrition stores that have been depleted from pregnancy and birth. Extended breastfeeding on demand 24/7 is God's natural birth control. There are so many books and studies about this that I would recommend you guys checking out if you want a break in between babies without using man's birth control methods.

Just a thought, Once saved always saved is an opportunity to sin and get away with it. This is Calvinism and is not taught in the Bible. A person who has gained the salvation of God can lose it. This is not to say as soon as you do something bad you aren’t saved anymore because God is gracious and merciful but there comes a point in a backsliders life where they realise they no longer have a relationship with God and it’s then just becomes a religion and not a relationship. The point of salvation is to turn from our sinful ways and not to continue to live our lives as we did before salvation, if we do that then was it even repentance in the first place?

@salina1595 exactly.. And it all comes down to the biblical truth of God judging us by our heart and man judging us by our works. 1st Samuel 16;7 "for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart." This chapter of 1st Sam. 16 is also the same chapter that Samuel annointed David and it was when David was young. The Lord chose him then, David was saved then, and David was saved even while he committed those heinous acts, and so many other stories in the Bible. Thank God he gives us those stories to show us how much he loves us and that his promise endures even through our imperfections.

Keep studying Christmas... Hopefully this can be something we all turn away from in the future... The Christmas Question by 119 ministries is really good information. Also, it seems that Katie is compromising more of her strong beliefs that are actually very beneficial. She was raised in the discipline and wisdom that leads to blessings and is compromising this foundation. I was very similar when I got married that's why I see it. It's so easy for women to go in the direction of their husbands even when it's not best. For instance I did not drink alcohol when I got married but my husband and his family did. Just wine, very responsibly and as a part of a meal. (I would note that a glass of wine 3-4x a week is too much) but it so quickly can start with once a week to 2,3,4+. Also, I did not watch television/movies and when I got married I started watching movies that were not wholesome because my husband enjoyed that. Those movies influenced us and we were unaware. I have since seen this slow compromise in our family and now I am attempting through prayer and respectful communication to take our family in the direction I was before we got married. I know it seems that these things are not a big deal but I assure you that Katie is compromising and the effects are going to be a degradation of unknown proportion. I highly recommend Pagan Christianity by Frank Viola.

Here’s the thing and I hope you take this the right way. As husband and wife we are supposed to grow to be ONE. One in mind, beliefs, body, etc. follow your husbands lead as long as it is not against God and his commands in scripture. This will lead to a unified marriage. Satan wants to divide steal and kill and destroy. So many women want to be more spiritual than their husbands, and in so doing they drive a wedge between themselves and their husbands leading to more divisiveness and less unity. If your husband is not leading you to sin and it’s just something of a preference then I would follow his lead.

I can say the “pre” view has been very paralyzing in many aspects exactly like you are speaking about with multi gen children and finances and things. Before being saved it was mature and smart and a no brainer for anybody to save for the future and make better life for generations to come. Once I got saved it was hard to get back into that mindset bc of the thinking Jesus is coming back and if it’s soon none of this will matter. i’m only just now making the connections just like you guys on how to change that and get my motivation back for the future. i would love to her you guys talk about this more as i don’t know any people with the “post” view or how they are living now but it makes sense what you guys said here briefly!

Christians in the early church lived in light of the "appearing of the day of the Lord"- its there constantly in scripture - how much more should we eagerly wait expect and watch for his return (and all that goes with it!) If it wasn't important why did Daniel receive so much revelation about the End Times so afar ahead of his time. Without vision we perish. Eschatology should be a primary subject of study because we long for Jesus' return and it effect how we live our daily lives. Would love to hear more of your processes on this :)

It is interesting that you mentioned what you like about post millennial theology, because I have been listening to a couple of podcasts run by people with this theology, and that is the main thing I’m attracted to about it as well. At 52, it’s a little late to implement some of what I’ve been learning from them regarding generational thinking and planning, but I am passing on what I learn to my 3 living children. I also like their views on bringing the kingdom to every aspect of life, including government. It’s better than having a hell-in-a-handbasket attitude, just waiting for Jesus to come back. Like you said, I’m a pre-millennial, and I’m not likely to change that view, but fortunately what we believe about eschatology doesn’t really matter all that much or he would have made it clearer in his word. What’s actually going to happen will happen at the end regardless of what any of us believe. But I do like the change it has made on my outlook. It is much more positive than doom and gloom.

Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again." Proverbs 23, 29 - 35 Alcohol is not a toy or a cute little pet you can play with. The Bible warns clearly about the danger of using alcohol! The records are full of crimes of all kind that were comitted under the influence of this poisonous drink.

I think it’s totally normal and healthy to have shifted perspectives, since we should always be growing throughout our lives. (After being married for 9 years, we’re also doing the whole “birth control” thing a bit differently than we have up until now…) Blessings!

You should read Romans 2:14-15 where St. Paul appeals to the concept of the "natural law". Natural law is derived from the concept of teleology in nature, that is, within nature there are particular goals/ends which God intended for nature to fulfill. Within the context of human sexuality, each particular act must at least be open to the possibility of conception, and therefore, we shouldn't do anything to frustrate conception such as using contraception in all its forms. In fact, contraception is contrary to nature.

I think, too, that all of the early church had a mindset that Jesus could rapture them at any moment. I think that the part people have to be careful of is that we - flawed, sinful humans - are going to bring in a kingdom worthy of God. No, He is coming in His will and timing with His Kingdom of Heaven.

YOU may be able to treat it like a compliment to a good meal. While a drink will not determine your eternal destiny, it can ruin your earthly path. No one makes a decision one day to be an alcoholic. Your children and family will have to decide, but your testimony against it lovingly will give you a platform to speak from in your walk with Christ and in your parenting.

Alcohol impaires your judgement, you don't have to consume a large amount of alcohol for it to effect your mental and physical being. The Holy Spirit communicate to us through our frontal lope, and any amount of alcohol will effect our spiritual discernment. I wouldn't encourage any christian to advise anyone on drinking alcohol not even moderately. The bible call us to be temperate in all things. True definition of temperate, is to remove all that is bad and to be moderate in all that is good. To send someone to drink alcohol moderately is to tell them someone to go and lie as long as they don't hurt nobody well knowing that the bible say it's a sin to lie and yes! the bible have many verse to tells us to stay away from alcohol. JESUS DID NNOT DRINK WINE BUT GRAPE JUICE DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Amen 🙏🎉 well said. Don’t look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, going down smoothly. In the end, it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart will speak distorted words. You will be like one who lies down while out on the sea or one who lies on top of a mast. “Though hit, I feel no pain; though beaten up, I don’t know anything about it. When I wake up, I’ll look for wine again!” Proverbs 23:31‭-‬35 God seems pretty clear about this topic. Not very biblical based of them, as they seem to claim to be on other topics like parenting and so on.

I don't know that eschatology needs to be the informant of how we live today. Centuries have passed with many generations of people who were pre-millenialism believers who sowed the seed for future generations. I think you can look at the gospels alone to know that Christ came so that we may live life abundantly and parables that talk about spiritually investing in future generations and He didn't even wrap that up with eschatology, with the exception of Him saying no one knows the hour, but the Father Himself. How dare we make a timeline and choose to live by it. If Jesus Himself didn't say the time, how audacious of us to claim to know. With that said, I don't know any pre-millenialism believers that are investing in just the here and now. Some may be preparing for Christ's coming by being more intentional about sharing the gospel and seeking Scriptures to know God deeper. But to hunker down for today waiting for His return seems like the opposite of what we are called to do, regardless of your eschatology. And I pray Jesus will bring forth a better kingdom because what He is able to do would be 10000% better than what we could ever think of. To God be the glory!
