I think you're right about patience. These guns can just be loaded and blasted away with, but they reward taking one's time learning about loads, points of aim, even grip style (for me at least, coming from modern revolvers). Plus, all the fundamentals of shooting still apply 😂 Thanks for showing a test of your own shooting! One-handed is the way to go!

Hey Jay, I have a real life example of an 1851 Navy brass frame that has been shot over loaded. It’s a Pietta that’s sold as an 1851 Confederate Navy .36 brass frame, only mine has an octagonal barrel. And it would be a good example of what happens to brass frame revolvers that are over loaded. Thought about sending it to Mike over at Duelist Den, to let him do a video about it.

Well…I’m sorry bout your gun but a lot of people ought to see and understand the issue with brasses. Great guns if they’re taken care of. Thanks.

I bought an 1858 Remington new army revolver with a brass frame by Pietta about 24 years ago. I knew nothing about them, but the little I read about. The manual that came with my revolver said 22 to 30 grain of powder. The measure on my flask throws about 28 grains. So that is what I have been loading it for all those years, and I have put thousands of rounds through it, and it is as solid today as it was new. Just for fun, I started loading it with 35 grains of powder and a 200 grain conical bullet, and it shoots awesome. I'm sure I'm overdoing it with that load, but it is fun, and I know the gun can take it. But it is good to be safe.

That’s great! If it’s working for you for 24 years…go on ahead! I learn from hearing peoples different experiences. As it ages, like us all, just keep an eye out for hairline cracks to be safe. Otherwise fire away in my opinion! Thanks

I have this old Reb Navy colt repro that I bought in Italy in the 1960s. I haven’t shot it but a few times because of chainfire. I mostly overcame this by filling over the ball with Vaseline but that is messy so I mostly look at the revolver as a decoration. I never took the time to do anything about the problem. Your video gives me the gumption to try to remedy the problem. Thanks. A trip to the Log Cabin gun store in in the near future.

You said michigan? I'm stuck here, and don't seem to find like minded as myself. I've been shooting black powder since 1972 and cap and ball 75. Now I do flintlock on up. I'm mostly a Remington guy, however I do have a 49 pocket, a walker, Rodgers and Spencer, and a Ruger old army. This is my small channel. Just recorded a video on the bore size of my two. 36 calibers Mountain man

It’s always relaxing to see you shoot because you seem so relaxed and seems like you are thoroughly enjoying what you are doing! I thought you were going to take ALL the black off the paper haha. I agree about patience ……my last NMA it took me a hot second to figure out where the heck the thing was shooting and where to hold 😵💫 Another great video. Keep up the good work.👍🏽

Thanks! I am relaxed cause my shooting is my peaceful place. I love it and I’m glad it shows. I remember putting white printer paper all around the outside of my targets so I could see where my shots went lol. There are still some days where I’m more of a sprinkler that a good shot … but it’s part of the fun!

I think the grip frame differed quite a bit from the 1851 in the originals? like it was a 1851 bent backwards a bit.
@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb11 ай бұрын
I’ve held and original 51 navy and didn’t notice much of a difference but that doesn’t mean there isn’t. I noticed a big difference between an original 60 army and today’s replicas. For sure.

Hello Jay, I have the Uberti Griswold & Gunnerson, I bought it 2nd hand a couple of years ago, made in 1970, it shoots really well, lolly popping the sights at 25 yds. That's the same for the Pietta Schneider & Glassick (made in 2007) as I now know it is thanks to your discovery. Both these seem to be called "Rebel Navy's" in the UK but I suppose they were both copies of the 1851. I buy most of my revolvers 2nd hand. Today (August 30th) I was shooting a Uberti 1861 Navy .36 made in 1969 for the first time ..... and it was also shooting well with lolly popping at 25yds. So that's all with a large target so shots hitting 4 inches above the POA. I'm always very pleased when I get the older models shooting ok after a good clean up when I get them, I have shaky hands so unfortunately can't shoot one handed unless I'm shooting at a barn door but can still have a load fun two handed :) Cheers Chris

That’s fantastic!!! Since I’m old I love older things that work well lol!!! These weren’t made to shoot the wings off a fly, they were made to..as they said back in the day..to aim at the belt and hit the chest. So that’s why I shoot large targets too…two handed…one handed…it’s all fun! My hand is getting shakier too…so my two handed days are coming my friend! Keep shooting

I am a pretty fair shot with handguns. My brother and I shoot together a lot. I handload all our ammo and also do the velocity stuff. He chases bullet holes. I chase groups. meaning that I care more about how well the gun/load shoots than how I shoot. I am gonna have good days and bad but chasing the last bullet hole pretty much means all days will be bad. Once I know where a gun/load shoots I can either change the sights or change my hold. at that point I will shoot the gun as accurately as I am capable.
@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb11 ай бұрын
That’s great! We all have our ways of going about it…and we are all having fun, I hope. To me it matters that folks are shooting more than how they shoot! Keep on sir! Thanks for watching and writing! I appreciate you!
@doranmaxwell175511 ай бұрын
yep....LOL... I basically will not change my point of aim on any gun even ones I have never shot before until I see two or three misses that all ...well...miss in about the same spot.@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb

@doranmaxwell1755 and I do that too. Start at the bullseye for one chamber at 15 y and adjust from there!
@doranmaxwell175511 ай бұрын
@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb yeah but me being me.. I like to see two bullets going in the same place before I adjust. I like to sight in all my guns to about an inch or two high at 25 yards. I do this from a bench rest. Once I know the sights are on I don't chase bullets. I get what I get. Sometimes that it great and sometimes not so great. A half measure for me is that when I start flinching I shoot a bit to the right for some reason. I can get off another 5-6 shots by holding on the right edge of the can.
@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb11 ай бұрын
@doranmaxwell1755 hi. You’ve got a great process If you’re like me, some days are good, some are great, and some I can’t hit the sky if I aim at it! I try to get no more than an average of 3” from my bullseye at any distance 1 handed. It’s a process and I use the string test to see how I’m doing. Thanks! Thinking of shooting right now actually!

This is shooting like itd be a good candidate for a modern barrel crown... Had to do it to one of my Remingtons... 45°. Oddly, cimarron does that wheh they get their cap and balls from Uberti. Have you checked to see if the muzzle is square? Seem them a little off twice in 20 something guns over the years. Its why ill crown some barrels now after shooting.

I thought 17gr of 3F was a standard wartime load for a .36 revolver.
@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb7 ай бұрын
I think it was. I’ve seen variations on this. But my understanding 17 gr was the standard load in combustible paper cartridges. Loose powder I’ve seen different numbers. My paper cartridges hold 17 gr for my 36’s
