props to the director of this film, it shyed away from the happy endings that movies like dangerous minds, stand & deliver and freedom writers had, director wasnt afraid to get dark with it and show what some teachers have to put up with, especially in lower level educational area middle/high schools that dont give AF about the students or faculty alike. 💯💯💯

Technically, it did have a happy ending. The other teacher threw her teaching license in the trash and started a new life. The Hispanic girl, who was pretty lost at the beginning, became the valedictorian.

Instead of seeing this as some type of redemptive moment/second chance to change his ways, caesar was upset he took his turn so he tried again "i got a 1/6 chance of making it". The teacher was Cesar's last hope to live. Now that the teacher dead, Cesar made the right choice, he can't survive in the real world, why? Because every young gang banger, he's gonna die in the worst way or maybe becoming a junkie. At least one of the three in the movie, graduated from high school before it was too late.

What I believe is most powerful about this scene is that Garfield knew no matter what, he was gonna die. He might as well do it teaching Cesar something and that was about how misguided and tragic his life was. He showed all three that he wasn’t afraid to play the game, and he was more than willing to show them what would eventually happen. Great performance, Jackson!

I truly believe that, in the end, Garfield got through to them. That their way of life is garbage. Tragically, people like César had broken him to the point where, despite Garfield having the message to change them, he no longer had the drive to do so. We see that he got through to them via Stevie graduating and Paco seemingly leaving the gang life. It's sad. Especially since in Cesar's case, there was no father in the home. How different his life might have been if there actually was a father in his home. So it's not just the gang life that is bullshit.....

the last scene kinda consternating, i live in a poor southeast asian country, and the film just reflects life in urban and suburban areas of my country. Dysfunction of families negatively impacts on kids'. Many of them just leave house at night and gather with their friends just to rob and murder people who go home from night shifts, they embrace the gang life, all about killing and banging.

Pyrrhic victory on Caesars end he won Russian roulette but lost his respect so in trying to regain it because Garfield took his turn he also lost his life so in reality he gained his respect back but lost his life..... And that's what you call a pyrrhic victory
