I just watched Nicola Whites video you were on. I'm in California and enjoy watching your adventures in The Chicago area. Wow all those opium bottles are cool. I wish I could find some of those.

I dig in Galesburg IL and in 1860 there was a druggist here named Henry Heuermann for just that one year, after that he was in Chicago. He had a store at Clark and Elm that burnt n 1871. He rebuilt a new store on the corner of Einbourn and Larrabee St. I was courious if you ever dug one of his bottles. Thanks

What does dipped mean?

It means the "night soil" was removed by the night scavenger. They periodically cleaned out the contents of the privy to deodorize it and allow for more room to fill it up again. Many of these privies are dipped in Chicago b/c there was so much disease they deployed the night carts constantly. They would lower a candle in it to test for methane and if the candle didnt go out they would go down the privy. Some still drowned or died from methane poisoning anyway. Children also fell into them if they werent capped properly.
