You mentioned that you should pull on a tomato by the leaves and not low on the stem. Is this due to concerns in damaging the stem just before burying it in soil that could cause disease?
@susanphelps9674
@susanphelps9674 2 жыл бұрын
I start my tomato seeds in a couple of inches of soil in the red cups. As the plant grows to above the top of the cup I cover the stem with more soil to the bottom of the first leaves. Keeps you from having to pot up. Goes directly to the garden. Makes a healthier plant.

I have watched you and your husband for 3 years now and just love you'll and your channel. You two are such an inspiration and easy to relate to and understand. I have gardened for years but most of it was working in one of the best greenhouses in our town. I have had a garden at home for years also. But for the last 3 years I haven't been able to have a garden for both of my parents found out they had fast growing cancer. Lost them both 18 mths apart. It was one of the hardest thing I have been throw to watch both of my parents that was very active to fading away. So I decided this year to have a gardens and get back to normal. I fill so rusty but I so much want a homestead and a KZbin channel now I am retired early and ready to grow with you guys. Love your channel and what you all stand for.

Here my area CT, cant plant until Memorial day weekend. Yrs past made mistake of trying to get plants in earlier, mother nature bit me in the butt both those yrs. I'm potting up my seedlings today too. I needed a break! I'm hoping to have enough peppers and tomatoes to put up for more than a yr. I've been with you for quite awhile, I subbed because of your canning videos. You're easy for my old ears to follow! 🙂

Your pantry challenges was what attracted me. And boy was I surprised.. very pleasantly I might add! I thoroughly enjoy having suppers with you! ❤ I have always just had a ‘kitchen garden’ but for about 15 years when I lived in a gated community, container gardening was all that was permitted. I am an avid gardener but for plants/ trees. I am back to a kitchen garden again now for about four years. I grow green onions, tomatoes, green peppers, peas and beans. And of course some herbs. This year we decided, with tremendous debate to grow beets but have to give up a flower garden. My hubby won the debate, but secretly I am thrilled to try it. I love you guys. You are kind, honest and adorably cute.

As a new subscriber (which we found you through another channel called Little Mountain Ranch here in Canada), we have discovered the wide variety of homesteading techniques, challenges, experimentation, problem solving, and moreover, honesty. We are new on our homesteading journey, so having good skill and advice from yourself and others will help us to avoid certain pitfalls, but also challenge us to discover new skills going forward. Being a subscriber to our select list of channels means (to us) that you have proven to us to be a valuable source of skill and knowledge, but furthermore that we are a part of a larger community. Keep up the amazing journey! 😊👍

I found you through the pantry challenge. I've stayed because of the food preservation. I am not a gardener, nor do I play one on TV. Not my thing, my thing is sewing. HOWEVER, we are realizing that we need to do some food preservation and preparing for the future, whatever may come. SO whilst I will not grow my own food, I can pop down to the farmer's market and get what we need and preserve it. And help friends who ARE growing their food. I really appreciate all your practical insight into preservation, storing and using those resources! Thanks so much. Look forward to watching the channel!

It is autumn in New Zealand and I'm a newbie veggie gardener. Housing is very expensive in NZ which means the majority of folks rent. We moved into a rental property a stone's throw from the beach almost a year ago but with Covid and just life, I have only managed to get into setting up my veggie garden two months ago. I watched your video on which veggies to plant to fill your pantry and love the simplicity of it all. I feel that a lot of newbie gardeners are put off from growing their own food by how difficult some folks make it out to be. I hope to have a good harvest so that I can get into preserving as I remember my grandma always used to do♥ I look forward to working through the playlist on your channel! Big huggles from New Zealand!

Yep, I’m a naughty girl too - I totally pull by the stem. But I also tip them on on their side so theyre only working against half the amount of gravity. My tomatoes are fine: in fact my black krims have baby tomatoes on them already. I personally use the clear silo cups. As soon as they’re ready for their up pot, I place them in the very bottom of the clear silo cup and add more soil as they grow. I swear my toms are stronger for the extra light that comes through the wall of the silos. Maybe it’s psychosomatic. 😂

While watching your video in starting more seeds. I'm in CA so it's just about time I can direct sew. But this year I have a garden that's just about as big as yours! It's the biggest I've ever grown! I'm so excited but I did not start nearly enough for the space. And if you start seeds in doors you have more control over the new plants. My goal this year is to grits enough to preserve. I've been researching and learning all I can. I will definitely be rewatching many of your videos. Thank you!

I have peas planted and coming up out in the garden that’s all so far. Our apricot tree is in full glorious bloom and we’re trying to keep it from freezing in these few cold nights. It got too warm too quick, lol! So far, so good. I just found out about a product you can spray on them to keep them from freezing down to 20F or so. I will get some from a horticulturist friend tomorrow. That will be easier!

Zone 4 here, sowed in my carrots and radishes the other day in the garden and I potted up my tomatoes a week ago. You mentioned that you can't grow sugar but you can grow Stevia and after you dry your harvest you can process it into a power to use just like sugar. I grow a dozen plants every year and that's enough for me till the next harvest. I hang the whole plant and let it dry naturally then put a garbage bag over it and crunch off the leaves then continue on with all the plants. You use a lot more than I do though so you'd have to consider quite a bit more, anyways enjoy your video's. Happy gardening everyone.

Rachel, I found you in the beginning of the pandemic I think, when I first started watching you tube videos about farming and homesteading. I think I clicked on you because of the name of your channel. I live in an old house built in 1896. I love your upbeat, positive way of talking about everything. I love that you share good and bad lessons you've learned. 2 years ago, I just dreamed of living on a homestead and this summer we will be moving into our own!! It took a long time to find the right place, but it will be worth the wait, I'm sure. I am doing my garden in containers this year so I can move it with me! I was debating not even growing anything this year because we will be so busy packing and moving but with prices going up and the uncertainty of availability, I decided I just had to! Taking care of a garden definitely takes time but I will just have to make that time! I have learned so much from you in the past 2 years. Thank you, Rachel and Todd, for all your hard work making these videos.

I found your channel because I was looking into water bath canning. I live in an apartment with my husband and toddler and we're patiently waiting to move into my childhood home, which is in the suburbs. Until then, I want to learn as much as possible and do what I'm able to now, and that's canning. My parents let me start a flock of chickens at their house, so I actually just got chicks yesterday. I'll have some experience with chicken care by the time we move into the house. We'll have space for 6 chickens (city limit) and a garden. I'm planning to do container gardening at first, so content on that would be so helpful, as well as garden planning/layout in a small yard. Someday we want to have a proper homestead that has space and where the city/township allows for more animals, if we can ever get the money and opportunity to do it. I'd like to maybe see some tips on how to locate areas like that? We're in Northwest Ohio.

When watching you do tomatoes and introducing us to your fairy dust last year I ordered some Myco Bliss Fungi. I will be trying it for the first time this year when I do my tomatoes. I'm stoked and have learned so much from you, from gardening, to cooking, baking and canning. I just adore you and Todd. And....are my favorite channel.

While I've been watching your channel for a while now, I'm a newbie gardener this year. My dad is coming with the tiller soon so we can get the land ready. I started some seeds in sand and I'm just waiting until they are ready to pot in soil. Then plant them after frost. It's interesting, I transplanted some autumn joy and some day lilies last week(in-between the rain, Northern IL), and our yard is such a mix some areas are more clay and others are sandy.

Cherokee purples , mortgage lifters and brandywine are my absolute favorite varieties. I grow them every single year. The German giant is another variety I really like … especially for canning.

I tried this year skipping the smaller cells for my tomato and peppers. I filled cup half way with soil for tomatoes put two seeds in and pinched back one when both came up. Then when they reach the top. I put more soil in mine look amazing. I just using potting soil and haven't need to fertilize yet.

Good morning!!! We have a small homestead in NWPA. I have chickens and in the last couple of years I have really tried to ramp up my garden and preserving the bounty. I'd like to work on canning more things. I really enjoy all your videos. I also enjoy hunting with my compound bow. I look forward to harvesting more deer this year and canning more venison.

Rachel & Todd, you both are the best teachers and I love learning right along with you! While it's definitely helpful to follow growers in your same zone, etc., I have learned tons of things from you. I'm in North Central Texas (Dallas/Fort Worth) and most definitely only have summer, post summer, 1 week of winter, pre summer, summer...... 😂

Those tomatoes look beautiful! I found your channel through a canning collaboration at the beginning of last year and am so glad that I found it! I have learned so much! I grew up on a homestead and have been wanting to get back to it for sometime now! Currently waiting for the market to come down, so we can find and make our homestead. Right now we live in an apartment and so as much patio gardening as we can!
