I think, more to the point is, that so many of the lost grand old houses ended up like this one: abandoned and in great disrepair. And expensive to maintain when they are in excellent repair. They are things of beauty for sure, and I wish someone (or I, when the Lotto gods smile on me) could save them all!

I looked up information about the Hegeler Carus families. Mary's father built this mansion. He and his friend were into zinc mining & other minerals. Mary was the first woman to graduate from an Illinois college with an engineering degree. She worked alongside her father in the business and eventually ran it. Her husband was a writer and editor of religious articles and publications. He was a pioneer in introducing interfaith communication. It is well worth reading information about these two families. There's a lot more to both of these families than the above synopsis. 😊

@@LJones-n8c Thanks for the information. I manly watch Old Movies from the 1930’s-1950’s. People, Cars, Buildings including the ones constructed in the 1700th Hundred’s, and early 20th Century including Old vintage clocks, Radios, Lionel, American Flyer, Ives Trains. Old Coke Cola Machines from the 1940’s-1950’s are all an interest to me. I have I think 16 old Coke Cola machines dating back to the 1940’s- early 1950’s. And more Old Radios from the 1940’s, and 100’s of O Gauge, and Standard Gauge Trains. I have been collecting old cars, radios, lights signs and more for over 30 years. I just appreciate history, and antique, or vintage every thing. It brings to me personally a time that I in many ways wish that I could have lived in. It just transports me to a happier time that I so much have always appreciated.

Boldt Castle, on an island in the Thousand Islands of NY, was left to decay and ruin for 73 years after George Boldt's wife passed away during its construction. He was building it for her as a fairy tale castle, and he abandoned the project after her death. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in 1977 and began to finish the construction and restore the entire complex according to Geo. Boldt's original plans. It is absolutely stunning and well worth a visit.
