After a harrowing drive up the mountain, we came across Granite ghost town. Once home to 3,000 miners and their families, this once bustling town, with it's stores open 24 hours a day, is just shadows of what it used to be. it's hard to get to, and the home sites are hidden in the trees, but what a fun and interesting place to visit.

The Forestry department is letting everything go , but still collecting money from the public , still closing down more camp grounds in every state , what a sad state we are in and glad that I was able to camp in a lot of these area's all around the state's. I am 67 yrs old and was lucky to see most of the great land marks of nature and ghost towns , hot springs . Very sad for our children and countries state of mind.

The citizens will still have a right to travel into public land by any legal means like horse or electric vehicle. Or who knows, some as yet unrealized means like a drone helicopter version of kite surfing.😅

The unique purple color of these bottles is a result of the reaction between glass, manganese, and ultraviolet (UV) light. When exposed to sunlight, the glass turns a light pink or lavender to moderately dark amethyst or purple, depending on the amount of manganese and UV exposure.

Interesting history. It's hard to imagine the kind of work that went into constructing some of those buildings! And thanks for the top and code on the solar panel! It's like the one I got with my Rockpal. I have been wanting to get a second 100w folding solar panel, so I wasted no time ordering it at $100! That was the hold up, I couldn't see paying over $200 for one. Thanks!

We just stumbled across this place twelve years ago on a road trip. It was spring and there was still snow on the road. Took a risky chance driving up there in a rented RAV4. What a great time. I went into an old cabin near the bottom and found a 1951 newspaper still lying on a table. I use one of my photos for a screen saver. When we were there both the little cabins were standing but the one was in pretty rough shape and I see it has collapsed now.

We had a wood stove and we used to get up in the morning and make pictures with our hands on the frost on the inside the windows and walls, then of course we would run downstairs where mom had been up and started the fire. Beautiful simple childhood. Many memories and we were dirt poor but it didn't matter. :)

Great video, and one of your best explores. Just north of us there was a big silver strike in Cobalt Ontario. They had a vein of pure silver running through main street a foot wide. The town survived and the mines have rotted away such as this. Lots of history if you look for it.

Very few of the old mining towns survived to this day. Most of them disappeared as the building materials were removed to build again elsewhere.

Thanks for the solar panel discount. It has been hotter than blue blazes here in central TX and there have been warnings of possible power outages, but this unit will relieve the worry of losing our freezer's contents if the worst happens. Thank you. I loved seeing how much rock was used in constructing foundations and retaining walls - good way to make use of the rock they had to move while mining. Some of the wood on those old buildings was cut so straight - makes the stuff at Home Depot look poor by comparison. On the map you showed, it doesn't look like it's too far from the Bitterroot Valley? Biggest mistake people make when heading down off a mountain like that is they ride their brakes all the way down, instead of using the lower gears in their vehicles. The mountains of Montana could be Heaven on Earth as far as I'm concerned. I visited for the first time in June 2019 the area around Bozeman. I was there to attend the ICCC Convention at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds. On my way south afterwards, approaching the Earthquake Lake area, I was overwhelmed by the natural beauty of the territory. Much of the Rocky Mountains elsewhere, too, and of course the Sierra Nevada. Just spectacular. Thanks for an engrossing tour! Looking forward to visiting the region again in the next year or two, and of course looking forward to some of Montana's great PIE.

Rough Roads can have the best rewards. Looks like a very interesting place. No pie up there though eh? Fortunately for me, I have a boatload of blackberries to remove. My favorite method of disposal is in pie and cobbler though jam is very good for ice cream and pancakes. My broski is at the Noxon Reservoir for the next 10 days. Beautiful country around there too. Take care guys...

Not even a cow pie could be found! We're finishing up a small remodel in our house, taking down a wall that separated the kitchen from the living room. Fun times. Loved the blackberry cobblers when we lived in WA.

You should do a little video on it. As you know, I worked as a general contractor for 40 years so I take interest in these things. @@gonagain

You talked about how hard it was in the winter, living in a house with no insulation. It reminded me of a paperback I read, I believe it is: Mollie: The Journal of Mollie Dorsey Sanford in Nebraska and Colorado Territories, 1857-1866. It's considered one of the most accurate books on pioneer life. In it, she describes how they moved to Denver and her husband worked at the mine. If I remember the book right, she said that Denver only had 3000 people at the time, and their first place was in a cave with a wooden front and a blanket to keep out the winter wind. I'm thinking a blanket over the doorway in the mountains in the dead of winter is a little on the roughing-it side.

Folks worked harder and were hardier than we are now. Some of the first settlers in Montana lived in dugouts and caves first, then started building their cabins.

@@gonagain We? I'm not tough? It's not like I'd fight a grizzly with a pocket knife or anything, but...Ha! just kidding. Which reminds me, I heard of a bear that must be tougher than a grizzly bear. A Grissle Bear. I write for an Amish Outdoor mag (I'm not Amish) and I have been holding contests. This was for 15 yr olds and under. One of the qualifications was to name a favorite animal for which one 9yr old put down the Grissle Bear.

Years ago, my brother was the Sherriff of Granite County. My ex and I went there and took our CJ jeep up to the town and mines. It looks a lot the same except it is more overgrown than it was when we were there. At that time, you could drive everywhere up there and we did. Also, there wa sno signs at all and it was not a museum. It was just a ghost town. One of the buildings we found was an assay office and it had core samples in it from the mine. It was very interesting. And no there was no private areas either. Although we did not come across the shaft at that time. And that carved are you called a root cellar, could have been an Icehouse., They would carve ice out of ponds and put it in a tunnel in the ground or in a building with thick walls. The walls would be filled with sawdust for insulation, and they would put in the ice and put sawdust and straw between the blocks so that when a block was removed, the block behind it would not melt. My ex and I had a home down by Elkhorn Hot Springs that had an old Icehouse behind it. Ours was in a tunnel carved into the earth. Outside it was a huge pile of sawdust they had used for it. You see those granite block walls with the big gaps in them and then think of the block walls in the pyramids in Egypt with no gaps and seams that you can't slide a piece of paper in and marvel at that accomplishment thousands of years ago. When in mining ghost towns, always look under the door stoops. Miners were known to hide gold and silver or other valuables under them. Great video and thank you for taking me down memory lane!

That road to the Ghost Town seemed very sketchy especially pulling a trailer. That’s quite the deal on the Itehil solar panel. I’ve got multiple 100 watt panels already or I’d definitely get one

I'm glad it was you and not me going up that steep narrow road. We just made a trip through some hilly country and I was a nervous wreck. Shame on you for holding the camera and driving!
