Patrick Gilmore, born on Christmas Day in 1829, was an Irish born American composer and bandmaster, who worked in The United States from 1848 until his death in 1892. After the American Civil War, Gilmore's Band was the most popular band in the U.S. until overtaken by John Philip Sousa's Band. In 1888, Gilmore began the tradition of seeing in the New Year in Times Square, and this recording, although made after Gilmore's death, gives an indication of how the band may have sounded at a New Year's celebration.
