Apple make gold watch for reasons 1-make noice, all new are good news 2-branding for Apple Watch 3-make general user think how “cheap” that steel and sport were
@Gubby-Man3 жыл бұрын
Here's what I think Apple should do: 1. Make a Series 7 gold watch 2. Sell it for around $8000 or more 3. Let people return the watch for around $7000 or more when it becomes old 4. Apple can then melt the gold and reuse it in a new watch The total cost of the watch will be around $1000 for the user which is slightly more than a stainless steel or edition watch.
@Gubby-Man3 жыл бұрын
@UC7-l9ky1WUlEmotFMyd-YPw I just suggested whatever price that sounded good to me. They could of course sell it for cheaper and buy it from you for the price of the gold. The important part is that the price difference should be around $1000 because that’s when I imagine normal people wouldn’t mind spending that kind of money to get a gold watch for a few years.
@Antifa8502 жыл бұрын
Here what you should do 1. throw away your apple watch 2. Buy rolex daytona and watch your rolex price inflation

😂😂😂 This model is expensive due to the prestige factor, not the cost of materials. It's just a few grams of gold. This system wouldn't work if everyone could buy this model for just 1k, providing several years of usage.
@Gubby-Man10 ай бұрын
@@ator1 A gram of gold costs $66.6. The 42mm gold WATCH weighs 69g, so let’s estimate around 35g of gold. Thats around $2300 in pure material cost. I think i overestimated the cost back then 🤭
@Gubby-Man10 ай бұрын
@@ator1 But I disagree that the system wouldn’t work. Gold is harder to use in manufacturing than aluminum but should be easy to reuse. If apple can keep manufacturing cost to less than $500 they could theoretically sell it for around $3300, promise a $2300 buyback and still profit from it while flexing that they sell gold watches. Gold is just a material, why is a material prestigious? That’s just because of marketing from other companies IMO.

What Apple should have done instead was make a gold Apple Watch band. If they would have done that people could have used the band for a few more models and then when they could no longer use it they could sell the band based on the gold it would have had. So the person could have made their money back and maybe more.

While this explains the ultra-luxury watch market, but you forgot that the MAIN thing with these watches is their movements will last for a century. A $5000+ watch that doesn’t last longer than 10 years is a total non-starter. Also collectors take losses when they wrongly predict these things; so not “smart” to buy it expecting to move at cost in 5 years. The Apple Watch Edition (gold) was always doomed and pretty obviously a concession to let Jony Ive do whatever he wanted on his last new product category. Read any interview from 2015, only Jony really cared about the Editions, and he was the only one that ever wore them in public.

It was obvious since day one that the gold Watch Edition would become ultra rare collector’s items. Everyone slagging on it back in 2015, if you couldn’t see how it would obviously become a collectible then you were just blind. I always wanted to get one for that reason alone, but clearly couldn’t afford it. I have other Apple collectibles and this would have been the ultimate collectible. It was so outlandish, over the top, and expensive that it was obvious very few would sell (hint hint, thats the recipe for anything becoming a collectors item). In 20 years people will still be passing down the story of “hey, remember that time Apple went crazy and made an 18k gold smart watch for $10k that nobody bought?” By that point they will probably triple in value.

The resell value ob the normal Apple Watches is not THATS bad tho. After a year you actually probably could sell it for almost the same price. After 2-3 year that drops to like 2/3 or half but that's it. Here in Germany the Series 4 for example back in 2018 cost 450€ and a few months back I bought one for 230€ which was by far the best price I could found for a good condition version. 3 years later and still air mir than half the price.

Watching people justify this in the comment section is quite amusing. Rich people don’t like to waste time charging their own watch. Wearing an Apple Watch among the rich was a fad and now Rolex, AP, Patek, etc. are now just the standard. That’s where the appeal comes from, the fact that the middle class can’t afford the name brand at all. Whereas with Apple, you see people using their stimulus checks on this watch.

If you buy a 50 year old Rolex, it will still work as a watch. A 50 year old Apple Watch is going to be utterly obsolete and unusable, and probably won't even switch on as the battery will have long since departed this life, along with the capacitors and various other bits of the circuit board. People will buy both of course, but the people who want to show off how rich they are, they would get the Rolex; so that is a much larger market. Also, in 50 years time, I think there won't be that much difference in price between a gold and steel Apple Watch 1.

I agree, if money is no concern and you're a fan of the Apple brand and the Apple Watch, then it's legitimate to buy this version. However, objectively speaking, it's not a worthwhile investment. The money spent on it is essentially lost. Reselling will likely be challenging, and the value won't increase much because there are very few interested buyers. Moreover, it's still a smartwatch. Eventually, the battery will degrade. As far as I know, this specific Apple Watch model doesn't receive any service from Apple anymore. So, one might end up paying $18,000, and Apple won't even replace the battery. 😅

So it was a good investment for people who had or have 20k to spend on a rare thing that will most likely appreciate in value. Doesn't make it smart nor dumb just means that the unattainable things by a popular brand will always hold some significant value therfore for the people that can pay to play it makes since. This watch isn't some work of art or something to be appreciated. It's just another piece of rare tech history that will only keep its value because people that have that kind of money want it to. Trust me if anyone has a rolex and needs money immediately there are dozens of people that will line up at a snap of a finger to buy it. The apple watch is the thing that needs the right auction the right two buyers and the right economy to actually sell for the best price. Sure will you be able to get at least a couple grand out of it yes. But an actually valuable object is always sought after and the buyers will always be there. Point being is that if you have 20k+ to just spend without a worry in the world and your a big apple fan there are worse things to buy with that money.
