I clearly remember the day I first played Aliens; it was for my birthday in 1991 and I was blown away by it... The only super nintendo game I've played that actually scared me was super metroid when I was a kid. Me and my cousin played through it together. We were genuinely freaked out playing through the game being lost never knowing when the next save room would come or what was going to be around the next corner or through the next door. The first time we encountered the fake metroids in maridia or going through the wrecked ship were terrifying as kids.

To me Splaterhouse is my all time favorite horror games ever. Who doesn't want a Jason Vorhees lookalike to go around beating up monsters, and splatter their brains out with his fist. I mean this is the guy who have the guts to punch a knife and other pieces of furniture. All three of those games are my favorite, but if I have to pick one of them. I pick the third one cause of it's amazing FMV cutscenes, and that was a 16-bit Sega console. It's pretty amazing that how back in the 90s never hold back with horror games like this. I mean wow Elvira and Wax Work are those games with amazing body horror imagery. These are some of the amazing list of horror games I've ever seen. Have a spooktacular Halloween St1ka.

I love Splatterhouse 3, everything from the graphics, music, and EXTREMELY crunchy sound effects are so well-done. I know I should try Clock Tower one of these days, but point and click games are generally too obtuse for my tastes. Good list, I enjoyed the Elvira Games a lot and to be fair I was mostly a fan of the second one. The thing I liked about Elvira 2 was being able to turn nearly anything into spells, though you could stonewall yourself doing that if you did that to certain key items. I felt the graphical change to most of it was largely because it was a haunted movie set, rather than an actual haunted location, and it seemed the spirits involved were supposed to be animating movie stuff, so I assumed making it that goofy was intentional. I was a little surprised that "Realms Of The Haunting" and "Legacy: Realm Of Terror" didn't make the list if Elvira did. While goofy, and from the Dreamcast era/3DO era I think Illbleed (despite it being a mess) and/or Killing Time (a cult classic, and the flagship title for the 3DO) would have been big editions to the list. While to be fair Illbleed is lost to time as I don't think it was ever ported to anything (probably for good reason), Killing Time has seen PC ports, that said the big gimmick of "Full Motion Video" being used for some things did not age well, though it was pretty spectacular in the context of the time. I also did note with the mention of some obscure SNES titles that "Sweet Home" wasn't mentioned, when that was to many considered to be the freakiest game of all time, and has been getting Americanized versions for a very long time as far as I know.
@dieinfire920
@dieinfire920 Жыл бұрын
Sweet home was for the nes/famicom, not for the snes. Also, this video is about 16- bit games, that’s why probably some of the games you mention (like killing time) aren’t in the list.
@jeremyrichard2722
@jeremyrichard2722 Жыл бұрын
@@dieinfire920 He ,mentioned numerous PC/Amiga games such as Elvira and Waxworks, so I don't think it was intended to be console exclusive. I noticed afterwards that he has an 8 bit list in another video, but I haven't seen it yet, so perhaps Sweet Home would have fit better there. Not trying to complain too much, I know no list can ever be exhaustive as no one plays or is aware of everything, nor can a list be endless. I just thought those were some good ones worth mentioning. I have long felt "Legacy: Realm Of Terror" in particular never got the credit it deserved. "Realms Of The Haunting" had a lot of issues, but it covered a lot of the same territory as Elvira, and to be fair I have never seen anything else quite like it. Surprisingly those two seem to be missing from almost every list of horror games, which is why I went out of my way to mention them, as I know both had reasonable followings for their time. That said "Legacy: Realm Of Terror" was a pretty hard game, especially early on, so to be fair part of the problem might be that only extremely persistent gamers got to the parts where it really shined. I know a lot of people at that time who played it were incredibly frustrated over the way you had to dodge and avoid zombies, and the beginning favored very defensively built characters for that reason as there was pretty much no way to just kill them all like people at the time often wanted to do.
@dieinfire920
@dieinfire920 Жыл бұрын
@@jeremyrichard2722 of course is not “console exclusive” because he also put in the video many arcade games. But as you also mentioned, the main reason sweet home wasn’t in the video, is because it’s a 8-bit game, not a 16-bit game which is what this video is about.
@st1ka
@st1ka Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'd probably consider realms of the haunting closer to 32-bit. It's a little hard to differentiate with Computers. With that said, I didn't mention sweet home because the game is 8-bit, not 16-bit. I mentioned sweet home in last year's 8-bit horror video :)

Never realized there were so many horror themed games from before the PS1 era. BTW "Gabriel Night" seems to be modeled after Patrick Swaize on his role from the movie "Ghost" probably

The Vampire staking in the Elvira game is so violently visceral, not so much for the violence but the realistic point of view from the player. I wonder why this isn't done so much today.

I'm really loving these videos on your channel; so happy I stumbled across it! Some more retro horror games from my childhood that come to mind are Monster Bash, Hugo's House of Horrors. Monster Bash recently got a HD remaster for steam which is really cool.

It's cool that you worked on the GK1 remake -- it was my first adventure in the series & I enjoyed myself. Well, I had kind of played GK2 back when it released...but some PC problems had me losing my progress & I never revisited! The production values for GK1, the original DOS version, seems to be sky-high -- and I really loved the pixel graphics / palette of Sierra games during that period of time (Quest for Glory 4, one of my all-time favs, has similar art & dialogue portraits). I got that version on GOG about a year ago and do want to play through that version. Maybe I'll finally play through GK2, too. ;)

Your review of the Scooby Doo game was thought provoking(10:52). I never thought about what video game format should be chosen for a certain adaptation of a show or movie. You are correct that the Scooby Doo show perfectly transitions into a point and click game. Perhaps a visual novel format could be good way to make a Scooby Doo game as well.
@st1ka

Honorable mention for Dark Seed. A great point and click horror with art from H.R. Giger. Never heard of Laplace no Ma but from your description of it, it sounds a lot like Darkest Dungeon and predates it by over 20 years. It also has the same publisher as Clock Tower.

From what I remember, Elvira 2 was split into three sections: the adventure section in the house, the combat section in the mines, and the one that does both in the catacombs. Since you gain experience for solving puzzles too, it’s recommended to play the game in the order above to have the best chance for survival against the bugs and skeletons. (There’s definitely more battles once you get to the catacombs.)
