The Hell Fighter sprite looks like the main character from Prince of Persia's NES port. On the topic of 8-Bit horror games, Phantom Fighter is unique in that is plays like a 2-D fighting game more than anything else only one's enemies were powerful hopping ghosts/vampires each with their own power sets.

There was a Japanese Beta rom of "Monster Party" dumped.. its pretty neat as they had to change a lot of the bosses / enemies due to copyright concerns.. even though it was a parody title. I guess Bandai didn''t want to risk having to fight hollywood over movie monsters. It has the Thing, Gizmo/Stripe, it makes the flower boss into Audrey II, The pumpkin kid is actually a Ape soldier from Planet of the apes, the list goes on.

Project Firestart (1989) C64 exclusive, 8-bit sci-fi survival horror by Dynamix and published by EA. So big u needed to load it from 4 disk sides. Worth a look, scared the hell out of me as a kid. Was unexpectedly cinematic and gory at the time. The Alien inspired tension building atmosphere was great, no room was the same, and having the story played out by its own realtime clock (a bit like Maniac Mansion or The Detective Game) was innovative and exciting.

I always found the best home port of Alien Syndrome to be the unlicensed version on the NES that Tengen/Atari remade themselves for it. Didn't quite understand why castlevania wasn't covered, when castlevenia clones were lol. But I guess it is the most obvious. I have to come out and defend alien 3 on gameboy. It is very clunky. But it is surprisingly a fully fledged survival horror game on gameboy released before Resident Evil! I think it deserves points for that alone, it is an adventure horror game with limited inventory space were you have to save ammo, medicine and juggle key items in and out of the equipment. And it has pretty standard combat, no golf mini games here (although I don't mind those either) Overall I would say that the biggest problem with the game is having limited lives coupled with a ton of one-hit death traps puzzles. If you erase either of those mechanics, you would have a pretty sweet 8-bit survival horror game. Great video!

Funny story. When I was a kid, one of my favourite video game shops had a copy of Resident Evil Gaiden for the GBC in their display case for the longest time. I've always kicked myself for never buying it. The same thing happened with a copy of Rule of the Rose for the PS2. It was a fiver...

Oh damn! I'd love to have those in my collection. Granted, I kinda hate Resident Evil Gaiden, but it would be a cool collector's piece.

@@st1ka same feelings here. Although, I hear Rule of Rose is a very interesting game, so I'd love to have played that. You can tell it's a good game cause the IGN score for it at the time was 4.9.

I bought a Gameboy lot on eBay years ago and they didn't know what they had. I won the auction for a GBC, Codebreaker, and a few games - one being RE Gaiden. I didn't care for the game and wasn't trying to collect so I sold it for over $100. The Codebreaker was scarce too so I eventually ended up selling it too.

I actually like Splatter House on NES. Yes, the first section and the mini boss were pretty chill, but after, the game is impressively spooky. I still remember how I was frightened by that girl with a twisting off head, when I was playing it the first time at the late night. The game also gives you a shotgun sometimes.

So, if that's the best 8-bit had to offer, we can agree that 8-bit wasn't really kind to Horror :/ 16-bit was where it started to take off, with 32 being the Horror-explosion!

Great video as usual, some interesting stuff here. Retro horror games can surprisingly be pretty scary, in a lo-fi kinda way. Also, I think the Hell Fighter sprite is similar to Prince of Persia and Kung Fu.
