I completely agree. There is life experience to be gained by dating and seeing what is out there. I agree that had Anna dated a bit she would have recognized that Josh is full of shit and would have run the other way. I know that the father is the one to give the approval. When ever I look back at those episodes leading up to their marriage it seems that Anna's father was more impressed with the fact that they had a show. I don't think that he did his job where his daughter is concerned. I wonder how he felt when Josh's shit hit the fan.

I don't agree with Michelle's definition of "dating" I've been happily dating my boyfriend for over 5 years now and have talked about our engagement. We have our goals to get married and we don't just want pleasure as Michelle says, that's just a bonus. In these past 5 years we have really got to know one another and grown together. I can actually remember a video i saw a good while ago when i think it was Erin that he was talking about, and he was talking about how much she was enjoying college or something like that and he sounded so proud of the fact that she was doing that and he mentioned about how if it was what she wanted that he would love for her to finish college before she got married. There’s a few big differences between the two families: 1) even though they all worshipped within the same branch, Gil’s family built their own church and Gil became the pastor but they are not as extreme as the group Duggar’s follow 2) Bates kids , boys and girls, were encouraged to go to college and the parents encouraged the girls to have careers if they chose to.3) even though they absolutely believe in no sex before marriage, the couples choose their own rules before marriage

The purpose of dating is to get to know someone and see if this person is someone who shares your goals, and whether or not thus person suits you. It usually starts out informal but that doesn't mean that it is not valuable. I love the Duggars but what they told their kids about dating is inaccurate. People should date different people it helps you narrow down the traits that are most important to you. I helps you decide what you won't tolerate from a mate those things are important to know. Through the process you learn about yourself.

I think Ben and Jessa are a cute couple. Jessa is a strong women. When her sister and her were in the bridal shop, she said she didnt want to try on dresses until she knew she was getting married. Also, she is not an emotional person, according to herself and family so if she is not all googly eyed its because she is reserved. Michelle acts as if hanging out to have fun is a bad thing. She dated other boys and the world did not come to an end. She got married when she was 17 when you are that young and younger all the dramas that you have with boys is a major thing. As you gain life experience you realize that it was not as serious as it seemed at the time. You need those experiences so that when the real thing comes along you will recognize it. If Anna had some dating experience she might have been able to see Josh for what he is and head for the hills. All this purity that they are always going on about is a little over the top. What is sinful about holding hands and kissing. The bible does not state anywhere that it is a sin to do these things. Some of this is just made up from whole cloth. Everything has some sexual connotation to them. Front hugs, dancing, kissing, holding hands and drinking. The first miracle that Jesus performed was to turn water into wine at a wedding. In the bible it talks about people dancing to celebrate and to mourn. All of these rules are ludicrous and amount to nothing. People are going to do what they want ultimately. All the things that taught Josh did not make him a good and honest man. At some point an adult has to make their own choices.

I believe that the people who say the kids can't think for themselves couldn't be more wrong. Courting and wearing modest clothes was taught to these children. Just like some of you were raised to believe that dating is the "correct" way, these kids were taught that courting is better. Obviously, these kids grew up around others who don't date (like the Bates). That is the norm for them just like dating is the norm for you, BECAUSE you grew up with parents and friends that said it was.Teaching kids what you believe is part of parenting. It's just a fact of life.

Okay maybe I'm crazy but why are they encouraging their kids to get married this young and not start their careers and explore the world a little bit first? Not trying to hate on people that get married young, but I'm 19 and can't IMAGINE getting married anytime soon. Besides, even if I fell in love with someone, who says I'll be the same person in 5 years? or 10? or 40? Why would I want to be tied into a relationship when I barely know myself?

You're not crazy, they are. My husband and I met and fell in love at 19. I knew then I'd marry him one day, but not immediately. We dated for 2 1/2 years even though we knew from day one we'd always be together. Why? Common sense, maybe. Thankfully my parents didn't pressure me into marriage just to save my virtue :)

People who date DO get married, not just people who court, so obviously courting isn't the only way of pursuing a serious relationship. These people's ideas are so presumptuous and just odd. And how about allowing the daughter herself to "ask the questions" of her potential mate? You're not the one dating the guy Jim-Bob, and you're not the one in the relationship. Your grown daughters aren't your property. They have minds of their own and can think and make decisions for themselves, believe it or not.

While I think it is good to date with marriage in mind and not date people that you don't consider marriage material, I don't see a problem with dating multiple people at the same time before it gets more serious. It's kind of weird how they're already talking about marriage when they first start dating. And what is wrong with a kiss? If you don't try that out before marriage you could end up like that nasty-kissing girl on The Virgin Diaries.

I think that for a marriage to work that it's more important for a couple to be emotionally compatible than physically. You can learn as a couple how to satisfy physical needs, but you can't force an emotional bond. People don't need to kiss to know that they love someone, and kissing prowess will not make or break a strong relationship. I like seeing parents encouraging their children to have solid relationships that are built on respect without getting physical. Save it for the marriage bed.
