I have not been able to understand the last stanza- the ocean pours through the jar and might as well say it swims inside the fish.
@AdamSiddiq4 жыл бұрын
God is the ocean. Through the jar - the container, the being, the mind - the light/energy of God is pouring through. The fish can be metaphorical for human beings or any creation.

Sir, I literally am in LOVE with Rumi's incredible poetries and your excellent recitation! I do feel the depth of the poetries. But in an Instagram post, someone mentioned that Coleman Barks' translation isn't accurate. When Rumi apparently talks about 'beyond right and wrong', it actaully in Rumi's Persian poem is 'kufr and belief' (if im not wrong). There were many criticisms against Coleman Barks' translation that he scrapped away the 'islamic aspect' of Rumi's poems (just like the above ones and there were more examples given). I'm in bewilderment right now. I'm sorry to tell this, but how appropriate do you think this blame is? Honestly, when I listen to these translated poems, I get enchanted. And about the 'reedbed': If Barks didn't know a thing about sufism, how could ve he written it? Sir, what do you think about this accusation?
@AdamSiddiq4 жыл бұрын
I'm familiar with this argument. In truth, to translate the Masnavi from Farsi to English is no easy task. Barks clearly does not know Farsi, but he was working with someone who was fluent in it. Barks rendered the translations to make them more modern. Rumi's message in one simple sentence is to love God and love all. These rendered translations by Barks still carry much of the spirit of Rumi. The benefit of what Barks did is he brought Rumi to a western audience. However, for those who want to dive deep, the best thing to do is to read the Masnavi. For English, Jawid Mojaddedi translated it best.
