I have the second cylinder, the Ada Jones one is great. Love her. I have a Gem A, I like to watch the key unwind. I have the same horn on a fireside, they really sound good for the size. Good show, thanks!

Nice presentation. What a find! And I love Ada Jones - my favorite comedian from the acoustic recording era. My mother's family purchased an Edison Standard machine used around the time Mother was born (1921). It came with several Ada Jones cylinder records. I loved playing them when I was just out of high school. Mom is no longer with us, but I still have that phonograph and demonstrate it often for visitors and friends. It's not nearly as rare as your GEM model C, but having the Standard gives me just that just that much more appreciation for your machine. Thanks for all the rich information and the wonderful demo. I really enjoyed it.

It's strange, gramophones and phonographs often get a bad rap because when you see one being played in film or on television, what you are hearing isn't actually the sound from the record/cylinder, but instead the digital music, equalised to sound with a lesser quality, and pops, clicks and crackles are added, so that the viewer hears exactly what they expect a phonograph/gramophone to sound like, rather than what they actually sound like. They do this also so the volume can be adjusted with voices and other sounds on the film/tv set.

This is just amazing. I have a 1923 oak VV80, and will probably never get to own or experience these earlier machines. Or any Edison machine for that matter. Thank you so much for sharing!

I just got a B model and found your information very interesting. You did well with your C! To get it with the horn in a different part of the shop is quite lucky. I agree that the double stripping is really sharp. That cylinder record is "gem" also! There wasn't a whole lot of stand-out selections on cylinders.

I have a very nice gem model A with a 19" gem horn and a 2/4 minute attachment. The machine easily plays all the way through a 4 mintue cylinder.

WOW! What a nice machine! And it plays so loud and clear! Thanks for the demonstration...say, I have a box of Edison cylinders from an attic find and have nothing to play them on...would you want them? Most are in boxes but some are not. I can ship them to you if u want them cheap!

This video inspired me to get them down (the cylinder records I have)...I have 18 of them all , 1 is called "The Coon Song" which I believe is a racist record, lol, others include come along little girl, come along, 1 is a brown Columbia cylinder, can't see the title good, another is "Oh Promise Me", another is a "detroit Talking Machines" brown cylinder named "Schwankovsky's Music", another is "Orchestra Hermasillo", Smile on me, Down In The Vale Of Shenandoah, Vaudeville sketch "Si and Sis the musical spoons", Are you coming out tonight Mary Ann, Short Stories by Frank Bush, Captain Baby Bunting, Vaudeville sketch "Herman & Millie", Everything's Funny Laughing Song, and Bells Pretty Peggy, along with 3 empty Edison boxes for cylinders with nothing in them...what would ya give me for them?

Can any gem if its powerful enough play a 4 minute record?
@diabetesben2 жыл бұрын
Gem Model B and C’s had to have a special attachment installed to play a 4 minute. The model d came with the 2-4 minute conversion already installed. So as long as it has the 2-4 minute conversion it should be able to play a four minute record!

@Altchannel29884 жыл бұрын
This is a rare model C and would go for a lot of money like probably $1000+ dollars but if you want a nice Edison phonograph you can find them for 400 to 500 dollars in nice shape
