Why MP5? Four words; roller locking delayed blowback. Delaying the operation of the bolt until pressures have dropped means the MP5 has less reciprocating mass, which makes it more accurate and controllable, two features that helped make it very popular among counter terrorist organizations and special operations groups who needed compact and accurate close quarters firepower. It also helps make the weapon more effectively suppressed, because hot, supersonic gases are not escaping out the ejection port as with straight blowback designs, in which the bolt begins traveling rearward as soon as the shot is fired. This was very forward thinking of HK, since 65 years after the MP5, the vast majority of SMGs still tend to be simplistic blowback operated with no delay or locking mechanism. You can add all the buffers you want to your B&T APC9, it still has more functionally in common with the STEN or M3 Grease Gun than with the MP5 and as such, can't claim to be more advanced. If you don't delay the blowback, you're just polishing a turd! O, and the HK Slap is bad-fucking-ass to any of us who grew up in the 80s...
@corynewton93112 жыл бұрын
I think you mean to say less recoil, not reciprocating mass. The bolt on the MP5 is a huge chunk of metal. I think you mean to say that the delay created with the roller system allows pressure to drop sufficiently that the resulting recoil impulse that is felt when the bolt does cycle is very minimal. Creating a smooth and recoil friendly firearm.
@MTMILITIAMAN7.622 жыл бұрын
@@corynewton9311 The MP5 bolt carrier is a substantial piece of metal, but at 7 oz or so, is much lighter than most of its competitors. UZI bolts vary from about 14 to 24 oz, depending on the model. Having less reciprocating mass is one reason the MP5 has such a light, smooth, and controllable recoil impulse. This is possible because the delayed roller locking system keeps the bolt shut until bullet has exited the muzzle and operating pressures have dropped significantly.
@corynewton93112 жыл бұрын
@@MTMILITIAMAN7.62 If your figure of 7oz for the MP5 bolt carrier group is accurate I will concede that it is substantially lighter than that found in blowback operated PCCs such as the CZ Scorpion which is reported to have a 21oz bolt and that this reduced reciprocating mass would definitely lead to a lighter recoil impulse. I guess my issue with your initial statement of "Delaying the operation of the bolt until pressures have dropped means the MP5 has less reciprocating mass" is that it is an imperfect understanding of how the delay method operates which allows for less reciprocating mass. All firearms are designed to delay operation of the bolt until pressures have dropped. It's more the means by which the MP5 delays operation of the bolt that allows for a lighter bolt carrier group which leads to less reciprocating mass that then translates to a lighter recoil impulse felt by the shooter. Both blowback operation and roller delayed blowback operation delay operation of the bolt until pressures have dropped sufficiently for the cartridge to be extracted safely. How they both achieve this is different. The roller delay uses the rollers acting on the receiver, bolt carrier weight, and recoil spring pressure to maintain the chamber closed and the blowback operation uses friction with a heavier bolt carrier in conjunction with a heavier recoil spring to maintain the chamber closed. Both accomplish the same goal, but as we've discovered the roller design allows for a lighter bolt carrier group which means less reciprocating mass and a lighter recoil impulse as a result. I hope this better illustrates why I questioned your initial statement.
@MTMILITIAMAN7.622 жыл бұрын
@@corynewton9311 The bolt carrier group on a direct blowback doesn't really lock, though. It begins traveling rearward as soon as the round is fired, with only the mass of the bolt carriage and pressure from recoil assembly controlling this movement. There is no mechanism to lock the bolt carrier or delay its movement in a blowback system. The mass of the bolt carrier will limit its velocity and control how far it travels via inertia, but that is it. The HK roller locking delayed blowback system is aptly named because spring loaded rollers physically lock the bolt carrier group in place and delay its reward travel until the bullet exists the muzzle and pressures drop. This is why its bolt carrier mass can be so much less than straight blowback systems.
@MTMILITIAMAN7.622 жыл бұрын
@@corynewton9311 Here is Flannel Daddy's review of the HK UMP45, a blowback operated SMG. You can see in the slo-mo at the intro, the bolt begins rearward travel as soon as the round is fired, while round is still traveling down the barrel, which is why these systems are often known to produce flash from shell ejection port and muzzle. Sound, powder residue, and gas can all escape from ejection port, to varying degrees, from a blowback operated system because the bolt us not locked and begins exposing the chamber as it move rearward as soon as the primer is struck. whikzbin.info/www/bejne/pZ_dnoWjnKlsrZY

As a federal law enforcement officer now retired. I was a firearms intructor and I'll state for the record that the mp5 is probably the best submachine gun ever made. And it is a weapon that will remain revalent for years to come. And it's the most accurate I've used. And I would love to see one clambered in 357 sig. Now that would be a upgrade that would elevate it to a totaly new leval. And one thing I really like about the 9mm version is how it stays on target in full auto. And I'll be completely honest I consider it the best made submachine gun ever made for cqb work. And rightnow I'm running a ar9 carbine as my primary home defensive weapon. And for my needs I consider it more than adequate for my needs. But I'm torn between getting a ar9 pistol or a PTR mp5 clone. Any way I'm going to make a decision soon. But I'm leaning towards the mp5. But I've got to I'm impressed by my ar9 carbine and a ar9 pistol has a lot going for it. But my has last round bolt open and uses colt ar76 magazines. And they are expensive. But I must admit it's a nice feature to have. And I'm totally familiar with the controls. And with a 10.5 inch useing a 124 grain plus p plus ammo. It raises the preformance of the round. And it's probably going to be what I'll get. But I'll always be a fan of the mp5. And it's way easier to mount essential lights and dot scopes which I've found to be essential for close encounters were it's feet involved and seconds to respond, a 9mm ar9 carbine or a ar9 pistol is as beneficial as a mp5 for cqb tactics as a mp5. And a ar pistol in 357 sig at 1600 muzzle velocity useing a hollowpoint bullets is a effective weapon for a compact close in use weapon weapon. But I'll always be a fan of the mp5.

Non LEO but lots of trigger time on diff platforms, whether borrowed, at the range, or in ownership and there's JUST SOMETHING about shooting one. Seriously. I can't speak for everyone but when you see the price and one is just like....ugh....just get past that. Just rent one. Borrow one from a friend. Shoot one that's actually tuned, lubed, and well-taken care of - it's something completely different - period. The barrier to entry will always be price - no doubt. One of my first CCW pieces was an HK USP .40 and I STILL miss that piece. Not the smallest, not the most ergo, but the quality if obvious. It's just ooooooozing quality. You can feel it when you drop the slide, you can feel it when you fire it, you can ESPECIALLY feel it when you work on it bc there's no slow, there's no complicated mechanics, it just works. I have a few different options for home defense and I'll go down preaching that frangible 9mm (30 of them) freedom pills WILL get the job done, period. It also emits a VERY SPECIFIC sound when you drop that charging handle. It's a sound what strikes fear in the heart of a villain. One does NOT go into CQB against a sub gun unless they've really considered and planned - at which point you're prob already effed. Iconic, a blast to shoot, putting holes in the same holes, and dead-ass reliable. I hope this platform never goes anywhere. Plus - as soon as you pull the tuned/built mp5 out at the range and attach the can - watch the group gather, bc they'll come. Guaranteed. Be a cool guy and let that 12yr old on their first range trip get a few rounds - instill that early. It's a sexy bitch and there are reasons it's stood the test of time. My roadmap why I returned to MP5. Saw diehard and I wanted a MP5. Thought I wanted longer range so I switched to AR-15. Realized I do mostly short distance shooting. Went with a short barrel AR but it was too loud. Switched to 300 Blackout but switching from subsonic to supersonic was a myth because it requires rezeroing your sighting system. So I shot Subsonic rounds only. Then I realized subsonic 300 Blackout is a $1 a round and has the same energy and trajectory as 9mm but 9mm has less recoil. Went back to MP5!!!!

The MP5 was a great system for the 1960's and it did stay relevant for a long time. However it no longer is able to compete with modern offerings. It is an out of date welded sheet metal weapon. No last round bolt hold. Not ambi, no magwell. When I chose my subgun I looked at everything available and went with the MPX. Full ambi, huge magwell, last round bolt hold. You can change the barrel and handguard in minutes. Modern aluminum construction.

The 'why' SWAT moved to AR-style has far more to do with 9mm not being 'enough' after the North Hollywood shootout. The shootout performance of the LAPD probably had far more to do with the mass disarming of LEOs of their options; a few years prior, the local governments had an issue with so many 'street' LEOs having M16/M2/M3/S&W76s and demanding their removal from the squad cars. 556 was found to be less of a problem with overpen than was thought, and a huge number of LEO's are Vets and their primary experience will be M16/M4. Then it is bean counters...if you are footing the bill for training/quals, and the trooper needs a pistol, sub-gun, rifle, and shotgun, only the big parties will not want to cut the guns/ammo/time budget down to 2, and many may be down to 1. I have seen it over and over; training and qual is a long, dull day of admin crap, with very little helpful training. I made the joke this summer that Freedom is an MP5k on your passenger set, and one does not need it to be 'used.' I had to take a trip to California...freedom was in short supply that weekend.
