The inspiration for my 1920s party outfit came from a video I saw about the 'Paris' coat designed by Paul Poiret in 1919. The coat is exhibited in The Metropolitan Museum of Art and they have very kindly put out a KZbin video all about it!
• How this elegant 1919 ...
The fascinating thing about the coat is that it is made from one long piece of fabric about 15ft/5m long with only one seam creating the coat. I happen to have a saree, which is of course a long piece of fabric, that would fit the bill perfectly so I set to work figuring out how to make it work and what dimensions I needed to make the saree resemble this iconic coat.
The video from the Met includes a 3D model of the construction of the coat so it just took a bit of dedicated thinking, testing and head scratching to get it to work. I was very pleased with the result and it was just the thing for my 1920s party! Plus it is very comfortable so I shall definitely be wearing it again :-)
I have added the measurements of my coat to this video so hopefully others can give it a go. Once you have these measurements, it is actually a very simple sew and could be created in about an hour, I think. You could also easily stitch it by hand if you didn't have a sewing machine so all round I think it is a fabulous garment!
Next week, we'll be back on the capsule wardrobe makes :-)
