1927 - loved the band as a kid in Australia 🇦🇺. Their top hit “If I Could” another great dong - first hit single and another great film clip I joined up after high school in the 1990s - and eventually served SAS with my USA marine / seal mates I volunteered , I wasn’t a compulsory hero . I joined the police upon my Hon / decorated discharge and joined the police As a cop, now 20 plus years , I was always more st risk and injured countless times . My retirement is near , my body has sustained a lot and m now paying for it physically and mentally

I just loved this band. Had their posters on my wall (from Smash Hits - any Aussies remember the magazine?) and the cassette album (I was 12 when it came out). This song is gold! I haven’t heard it so long and it still brings me to tears. Great reaction.

Another great Aussie 80s band. Another classic song of their is "If I could" and "That's when I think of you". The singers name is Eric Weideman. In case you didn't pick up through the lyrics, this song is about conscription during Vietnam war hence the title "compulsory hero", and lyrics "everyone put your backs to wall until your numbers called" and ''they made a law that you had to go and fight, one more crazy war". (After Vietnam 'national service " was removed).

Wow! This song brought back so many memories and one vivid one that i just shared with my 3 sons. That was of myself, my 20 yr old soon-to-be husband and his parents sitting around a table waiting to hear if he had to go to the Vietnam War. It was decided by a literal roll of the dice. A whole lot of wooden marbles with birthdates on them. If your birth date rolled out, you were off to Vietnam. My husband was lucky, many were not. That war destroyed a lot of young lives, one that was very close to me. This song epitomises that dreadful lottery; how you went from wanting to be a hero as a young boy to being a compulsory hero after being sent away with no choice and just "trying to make it home". My boys learnt a lot today. They had no idea.....

I was 13 when this song came out, and 1927 was one of my favourite artists. "Compulsory Hero" is one of those songs that doesn't just get the message across, it whacks you over the head with it. I always play this song every ANZAC Day (April 25) and Remembrance Day (November 11), along with Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American)", which also packs a punch. (I know it's not an Aussie song, but it's about the War on Terror, and it's another song that smacks you in the head.) Thanks for reviewing this, I'm going to revisit some 1927 now ❤️

Grew up with their music and I've seen these guys perform live a few times and they didn't disappoint. This is probably my favourite of all of their songs. Has such a great message to it and the video is equally as impressive. Often music videos don't reflect the songs meaning, this one does it exceptionally well. As kids we did run around our backyards, playing hero's with our pretend guns and playing dead. In our innocence, we didn't realise it, but we were glorifying war. As we grow older we begin realise the real human tragedy of war and the side effects it has on the returned soldiers and their families. You see the kids father in the video who I believe would be a returned war veteran, appears to be trying hard to return to normal life and be a good father, whilst struggling with the effects of PTSD. You can see him struggling to cope & his kids don't understand what he is going through. Very powerful song & accompanying video.

If memory serves me correctly, Eric Weideman walked onto the set of ‘Red Faces’ talent segment on CH9 in Melbourne with a guitar and a small amplifier and blew the audience away with his voice and guitar talent during a rendition of The Police hit song ‘Roxanne’. I also recall The Moving Pictures (1981) #1 hit song, “What about me?” co-written by Garry Frost & Frances Frost (née Swan) - Garry Frost co-formed 1927 (in 1987). Within days of watching Eric’s performance on the CH9 - ‘Red Faces’ talent segment; Garry Frost recruited Eric as lead singer & guitarist for 1927. Eric Weideman would subsequently sing a string of hits on 1927’s chart-topping #1 album; “Ish” -- ”What about me?” would be re-recorded in 2004 by Shannon Noll and [again] become a #1 smash hit! >>>>”Damn I feel old!”

An appalling period in our history. Young men conscripted by ballot by an inept government and sent to a war in which we shouldn't have been involved. A government that never passed meaningful legislation. Then the young men were shunned on their return. Voting the government into power continuously was our first mistake, then as a people we doubled down in it. Great song, great band live in their prime. Try 'That's when I Think of You' for a perfect pop song by 1927.
