Hello all and welcome back. In this video we finish the disassembly of the 2nd differential by removing rivets and splitting ring gears from the hub. Unfortunately, we find more carnage... Check out the video for more.

Chin up ! We're only beat when we quit.

I won't quit. Just slowing the progress. One step forward, two back.

Man that really sucks. Just the same luck that I have. Thanks for the video Kenny

Seems like the story of the D just doesn't want to have a happy ending. Lol

@@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch yeah I’d say so. Seems to be the same way with my luck lol

Here's my two bits - would I want to find a perfect, unbroken hub if this was my tractor? Yes. But do I think that the original riveted hub would still hold and work just fine in its current condition? Yes. It's one of those things that you probably could put back together and never have a problem, but you'd likely always have that little worry in the back of your mind about it. I know because that's exactly how I am too lol 😂

I would definitely have it nagging in my mind. I think I may have found a good hub (hopefully)... I was told by a couple of D experts that I should find a good hub if at all possibly (and they have to be out there, right?)... So, the search continues.

Maybe a machine shop could fix the hub. Weld, machine and rebalance? I use a roto tool bit at work, the spring loaded center pin also pushes out the blank. The struggle bus is real. 🍻🇺🇸

Maybe they could. I don't think the need for balancing would be necessary. I don't think this piece turns all that fast - the tractor only has a top speed of about 5 mph.

At first, I thought the impact from the air hammer was responsible for the cracks. But, watching again, you do point out that the injuries are old. We can't see that very well in the video. Well, shoot! I don't know what you do now. You have to prepare yourself for the possibility that there is no longer such a thing as a perfectly good one. I do have brazing skills. You have the torch. There is also an option for arc welding with nickel rods. But, from experience, it's really tough to weld cast iron that is heavily contaminated with grease and oil. It's so hard to get the porous cast iron metal clean enough to get the high quality result you dream of.

Seeing as the pieces were covered in oil on all sides, broken sides, etc... There's clear evidence this had been broken for some time. IF they were fresh breaks, the fresh cast would be visible and not covered in oil. I may have located a good hub, so we will see with disassembly of that assembly..

I wonder if Richard at oldfarmjunk101 has a good one?
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch5 ай бұрын
He might, but shipping would be a killer. I have a couple leads on more. It's not like they aren't out there. But finding a GOOD one is the challenge I think.

It will probably work just fine without them it has so far

I've talked to a couple 'resident D experts'. I was informed that it would be a much better idea to replace it than to run it like this. If something failed in the future, this would be a very difficult place to go back to and replace the hub if needed. I've got some leads. We will see what happens.

I watch all your videos but seldom comment, i would weld repair lugs on just so the clamping pressure would be correct and call it a day. I wish you lived closer i would do it just to make the video but we are a long way apart. Don't let it beat you.

I've located another replacement. Hopefully this one will be good!

Judging by your findings, it sure seems to be a weak spot in the tractor.

Braise the parts back on

I don't have the skills to do a repair like that. Not that I can't learn, but I would also be worried about having to machine things to keep them true.

zero for three is not encouraging for finding a good hub. to your point, these cracked surfaces are as black as the rest of the gearing, meaning they have been cracked and working without consequence for many years. I would argue the yrs of field operation did not break these parts. there would be evidence of joint sliding if that were the case. sliding can't happen on a riveted joint because setting the rivets swells them and fills the holes, so no clearance between hole and rivet. the clamp load on the bolts was obviously much in excess of the operational torque loads, otherwise you would have seen bolt threads imprinted on the edges of the bolt holes. I would argue that the clamp loads from both rivets and bolts was too much for the much weaker cast iron and caused a compressive shear failure early in the tractor's life. I would put the best of the three back together with complete confidence that nothing bad will happen, based on 40--60 yrs of successful operation.

Not good odds, but I may have located a good hub.. We will see. I have been told by a couple of D 'experts' to definitely NOT assemble it with these broken pieces.
