Apart from being a good singer of ballads, Fred was, in my opinion, underrated in the movies: he was a natural "he-man" and a very refreshing presence in films

Actually, only 'After A Million Dreams' was recorded in (late) 1929. The other two were recorded in February and March of 1930. For some perspective, this was 1 year before MacMurray's future Double Indemnity co-star Edward G. Robinson appeared in the role in Little Caesar that made him a star. And when Indemnity came out 14 years later, Robinson was initially hesitant to take the role because he would have take a backseat as co-star to MacMurray, after playing the lead in pretty much every film he was in since Caesar.

PZ, I think now Fred McMurray was underutilized as many talents as he had. He also played the Clarinet. I thought he was great with Kate Hepburn in Alice Adams/1935. He should even played diverse roles played his musical instrument as well. I to watched My Three Sons on television Saturday Nights. They were on ABC and CBS too. I believe he also is Canadian as well. RCJ/LEO

The lead saxophone heard at the 0:30 timing mark in “After a Million Dreams” is MacMurray, who was primarily a sax player in both orchestras. Years later, when he hosted "Hollywood Palace" and George Gobel was a guest, he poked fun at the recording: kzbin.info/www/bejne/epDMant6fLNrb9ksi=IaIyG28KyzyX9mWP

Fred played the sax in the Disney movie "Follow Me Boys!" in the sixties.

@@TomDaly943: Yes, he did, on his re-plated and re-padded tenor sax in the “Happy Birthday” scene. He said it took him about three weeks to regain his embouchure-he wanted to play it rather than have another saxophonist over-dub the tones in synch with his fingers on the keys. Watching the scene and paying close attention to his embouchure and breathing confirms that he’s actually playing the instrument.

@jimdrake3436 there's an entertaining episode of The Jack Benny Show with Jack's band having a rehearsal. Among others, there's Fred on tenor, Tony Martin on clarinet and Kirk Douglas on banjo.
@jimdrake-writer6 ай бұрын
That's a great episode, and I'm glad you mentioned it because it's on KZbin. You may know this, but Tony Martin (then Alvin Morris, his birthname) was a "doubler," a saxophonist and clarinetist with a California band before he became a singer. Another clarinetist, to my surprise, was Phil Silvers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3mUeGN_nsuErrssi=oSZn5VlcEjCsdidi

Comparing this transfer of "I'm In The Market For You" with the older one that you've done 10 years ago (kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6HRhXSJZriomZY), I can hear that there's less background noise and a little bit more definition on the higher frequencies! Thank you for getting even more sound from these platters!

....glad to hear you are enjoying the tunes -- yes, I have re-done a few favorites improving the sound. Wish I could re-do them all! Thanks for your comment!
