This silent 16mm home movie was shot by an American tourist during a trip to Italy in the late 1920s or early 1930s. (If you recognize any areas shown in the film please add them in the comments.) The film begins with various shots in Monaco including the waterfront where trolley cars are seen. At :24 what might be a casino is shown. An elegant man in a top hat (;33) walks by and salutes. At :43 men stroll by a hotel veranda where drinks are being served and toasts made (:50). At 1:06 the Galerie Charles III and Bagatelle Monte Carlo Restaurant, as well as a bank, are shown. At 1:26 the railroad station is seen.
At 1:54 the film shows what is most likely Italy. At 4:07 a sign indicates we're on the old Appian Way. At 4:20 the Apostolic Monument and catacombs, possibly in Rome. At 4:30, an incredible sight, as a group of soldiers or policemen with rifles on their backs ride bicycles past the cameraman. This may be Italian Bersaglieri, who at one time formed a bicycle infantry. At 4:50 Roman ruins, probably the forum, are shown.
At 5:30 a visit to the island of Capri is apparently shown. At 6:00 a ship is shown with passengers boarding small boats to get to shore. At 7:28 a small band poses for the camera. At 8:00 a village on the Italian coast is seen. At 8:16 Mt. Vesuvius towers over the landscape. At 8:50 remnants of a Roman aqueduct are shown. At 9:00 ladies parade past the camera on the beach. At 9:12 a rowboat is seen at the beach. At 10:27 a woman uses what looks like an exercycle or possibly a bicycle powered boat at the beach.
At 11:43 Venice is shown including the Bridge of Sighs at 11:53, St. Marks Square, and more. At about 12:00 the film shows what appears to be a trip on a river flanked by towns. It's unclear where this is but it might be the Rhine River valley.
