1934 SENTINEL STEAM LORRY CLIMBING BEACHY HEAD

Taking the Sentinel "Jupiter" out for a run with the newly refurbished living van"Mary Celeste".We pass through Hailsham and steam along Eastbourne seafront before a quick stop to take on beer and water,then its non stop uphill over Beachy Head and on to Alfriston where we stop for the night. Please excuse the shakey camera as I was soaking wet and shivering on the bike.lol.

These are such impressive machines, it makes me wonder how they would look today if they were still in regular use. If they kept the steam engine but modernized everything else. I'm glad to see people taking care of these pieces of history. They have a charm that most new vehicles lack.

I was born 1951 and on the islands the sanitation truck was still horse drawn. All the old Western movies I watched had locomotives that ran on coal, water and steam. By the way, we now have catalytic converters and gasification units that could eliminate all that soot that could lead to numerous respiratory problems. Nuclear power plants still use super heated steam. Rev. Ronnie Redford.

This camera/video Malarky is all good fun, but a learning curve at the same time, trial and error and all that. When I began, I had no idea what I was doing, Im still useless at times, ha ha, but only by watching other YT video's & seeing how others do it, I picked a few tricks up along the way myself. Each video I made, I tried to improve on my last. After uploading my own films, I pick flies with them..ha ha - You have an eye for it, I can see by your work, keep up the good work & great films

The last one was built in 1951 and their last steam locomotive was built in 1958. I would rather be burning coal in one of these than burning diesel in a range rover, and you can pick one of these up for the same price.

Great question. The Sentinel uses a super heater to reheat the exhaust steam so a traditional condenser is not required as all of the steam is used. The bags of wood are the kindling to relight the boiler as we planned an overnight stop. Many manufacturers stuck with solid fuel right up until the end rather than update, although Sentinel did make diesel locos up until the fifties. Oil fired steamers where extremely successful at sea but it never caught on in a big way on the road.

This old Timber wagon uses coal as it's fuel source. It needs a good quality steam coal so it produces a good clean burn, unlike the cheap household coal it is using here. Every 1 horse of steam power is 33.000ft lbs of torque so despite the smoke the engine is very efficient.

Yes I do use a small tripod that I can clamp to trees and gateposts but the old sentinel set off at such a pace on the straights,that I had little time to race ahead on my bike and find the best spots to film from. The walking, and bike cam shots are the worst affected. I wouldnt mind taking up a course in movie making if I could afford it.The old girl did well to pull 32mph along the level with the trailer and a dozen people on board. Sitting behind on a motorbike is the best way to savour it.

Would love to see what one of the great modern steam engineers like Andre Chapelon, David Wardale or L.D. Porta could have done with one of those. Cleaned up the emissions, increased the horsepower, and improved the efficiency in all probability.

Thanks,I do sometimes sit down and rest the camera on my knee as well,but the wet weather wasnt good for the chalfonts so I had to stand. I will try the yt video editor and see if that stops the shakes for now. The Police were no problem,but a few locals looked a bit upset when we emptied hot cinders on their new road surface.

The noise at 6:15 are the chains. These Sentinels had chain drive from a geared axle to drive the rear wheels.

Im no expert myself, and you definitely don't need any courses from what I've seen of your camera positions and editing, trust me! - I would expect shaky movements filming from the motorbike, I get it filming from my van, as much as I try to avoid it where possible. But when your positioned at the side of the road, I would def be looking to stick my camera on a post or anything solid, then spin it round as and when the lorry passes. You can edit out the spinning bit on the PC, easy.. :-))

No we only manage about 30 or so mph on the level, but this hill is a famouse challenge for cyclists so the local traffic is used to going a little slower. I'm not sure what the extra noise is that you can hear but it might be the blow off valve working. This engine runs at 250 psi which is 100psi higher than most engines. As for the You Tube editng, it's supposed to remove camera shake but ends up looking a bit pissed. I am using an older Flip ultra hd 2 but will get another camera soon. Cheers

Additionaly, internal combustion engines quite simply couldnt produce the power. Our DG6 produces around 8hp and 14.000ft lbs of torque. Simply explained, the HP is the amount of bangs and the torque is the size of the bangs, or chuffs in this case.

It wouldnt run very well. It would need a huge tender to carry enough wood. When running under a lower load and burning low sulpher high quality steam coal this is a really clean engine.

Of course you are correct to some extent, but how many cars are also only used as playthings, many more I suspect and of all the cars that have the same power and more as a light aircraft their use is also irresposible. When this Sentinel is running at full efficiency it burns up most of the pollutants using a superheater and it's exhaust emissions are much cleaner than the rubbish incinerators that most towns use these days The air around us is filthy and these engines contribute in a small way

Ah well you see,the ecologists say that when the trees were growing they absorbed co2,now they are releasing it back into the environment. However the unburnt hydrocarbons and other noxious pollutants are caused by the cheap grade of coal we were using and this engine wasnt burning hot enough at times. When we realy get going the chimbly only emits steam. The handfull of steam lorrys left on the planet cause less pollution than all the kettles that go on during the Corrie ad breaks.lol

Yes it doesnt take much to cause a tailback. At least we managed 30mph, bicycles barely manage 2 or 3mph uphill and the selfish buggers wont pull in to let you pass.

The handful of these that are still in existence produce a lot less pollution than the 10s of millions of private cars being used on the planet every moment of the day. Since engines like this are only run 2 or 3 times every year then the ratio means these produce less carbon.

In the 1930s Britain was a coal- rich nation with few known domestic oil reserves. North Sea Oil was yet to be discovered, and imported petrol and diesel expensive. In heavy haulage, and in certain situations such as in isolated areas, these trucks made perfect sense. They were, even at the time, viewed as an outdated anachronism, however, and heavily taxed due to the perceived damage they did to the roads and environment. Sentinel were the only British company still engaged in serious steam lorry production by this time. Possibly we were still a little wedded to steam power as we were the first to develop it. In a similar way, Deutschland may still be in love with their Benz, Audi and BMWs today. In a few decades we may be wondering what the hell they were thinking as well! PS. Don't forget that BMW's first car, the Dixi, was a copy of the very British, and very revolutionary, Austin Seven!

You're gonna have to describe what you mean better than that. If you mean the relatively rapid piston noise, that's because a/ it's almost certainly a compound engine with differently geared high and low pressure pistons, b/ steam road engines, in common with other types like Shay engines made for stronger acceleration and hill climbing rather than ultimate load hauling or top speed, with small wheels and geared transmission rather than huge wheels and direct drive, actually run at relatively high rpms / stroke frequency (with smaller boilers and pistons) compared to rail locomotives. There were very few road diesels at that time, or even farm tractors, and those ones used actually quite slow-running hot-bulb diesels rather than the more familiar gasoline-esque current setup.
