I worked with several veterans of the Chrysler Airflow body shop. (1964. - I was a college co-op at Ford’s Engine Engineering, Engine & Foundry Division.) The Chrysler old timers said the bodies many curved panels caused production fits. They really didn’t yet know how to produce smooth panel fits. The body shop was forced to use lead filler - so much lead in fact, that lead poisoning of the production line works was a real concern. Chrysler had carts full of MILK running up & down the body lines. Workers were encouraged to take frequent “milk breaks” and drink all the milk they could. The calcium in the milk combined with the lead.by a chemical process called chelation, allowing the chelated lead to be excreted (pee’d) rather than build up in the workers bodies. I guess I never looked closely at details of the Airflow bodywork until this video. They really were well done, weren’t they?

Hi Jay! I too, am a fan of the Airflow. I believe that those are grilles underneath the headlights, to allow the sound from those LONG trumpet horns that run in the engine compartment to escape. The 1936 Ford had a similar feature. Chrysler just put the parking lights in the middle of the grilles, a pretty darn nice styling touch! WYR, Hupmobile, Airflow, Airflow.

I wonder if the cautious mood of the buying public was responsible for the sales disaster. After all, these cars came out only a year after the 1933 bank holidays. Possibly people who could afford to buy were very conservative in their car buying decisions. My own ancestors could only afford a new Essex because of a 1930 fire sale on 1929 models just after the stock market crash. Chrysler was lucky to have kept the mid 30's Plymouth's more conventional styling to keep some market share. My Dad had a 1935 Plymouth in the late 30's and really liked it. Great video as always.

It took me a long time to put this one together to be 100% honest I tried putting this together a month ago was back in October and I thought it was a 34 Chrysler I wrote the script and everything for a 34 Chrysler and then I couldn’t use it because it wasn’t the right year, going to cover all of the airflows one day so far we’ve done too. My dad was born in 1922, so he was alive and observant when these cars hit the market. In fact, he sold newspapers on a busy street corner beginning in 1934, when he was 12. I remember the first time I saw a picture of an Airflow (I think it was a DeSoto). I mentioned it to my dad, and he told me that was the ugliest car ever made. 😂 Now, to be fully transparent, my dad hated Chrysler products with a passion. His comments that day (when I was about 12) influenced my opinion … until today. After watching your video, I think I like the Airflow. It’s certainly advanced … and it is stylish. WYR 1) Eh … I’m going with the Packard WYR 2) You had to put a Hudson in the running. I can’t go against Hudson (except for Nash) WYR 3) YES … I’ll take the Airflow!!! Happy New Year Jay!

I never realize how rare the coupes are personally I think the four-doors look better That’s my favorite error of Chrysler 1932 through 1937. I’m really like 1932 through 1933 Chrysler imperials it’s a car that I never knew existed until maybe a year ago I’ve seen a bunch of them body style just low slug sporty and then you have the airflow which was so far out of left field from anything anybody else was doing. They’re just so different. You never see them… eventually share it with his people as possible and get more people motivated to drive this stuff and use as intended. A bit of a side story a lot of people know that I have a 52 Chevy truck but when I bought that truck, I was the only person around here to have that type of vehicle I now know of at least five within maybe a 10 mile radius, which is insane. It’s like I want to think that I inspired those people to drive something different.

The interior has some nice subtleties. The instrument panel is slightly canted back at the top, and the gauges follow that canting even a bit more. it must have felt like the utmost in modernity to be inside such a coifed shell when the typical car was pretty boxy. Metallic paint really sets off the styling, I wonder how prevalent metallic paint was for these cars, if at all.

Been waiting for this video. I'm with J. I absolutely love Airflows. I almost bought a 1936 Desoto Airflow to restore in the 90's but it needed more welding than I thought I was capable of at the time. I have always regretted not getting it. And I really love the Chrysler couples and would love this one. I'd choose the Airflow in all scenarios but that Packard is very sweet looking too. As far as cars to review, I'd be interested in a Chevy Nova, any Tatra you may happen to see, and if you get a chance to get to the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum in Cleveland anything that strikes your fancy there would be interesting.

I'm pretty sure Walter Chrysler was dead before the Airflow was designed. FYI- Famous racer and automotive inventor Smokey Yunick had one of his first jobs working on an Airflow for a dealer. He thought that car should have been a world beater but he didn't like one feature. It had a vacuum operated clutch which was very problematic. He ordered parts to fix it but left the job before the parts came.

After the Airflow failed to sell well in 34, they tried to make it look more "normal" by adding length to the hood, ruining the smooth look of the 34. I like the Airflows, and the earlier, the better. I rushed off to find my 2 mint condition 1937 Chrysler sales brochures to compare. 37 had an even uglier hood. I have no idea what those extra numbers on the speedo/tach are. I'd really like to drive or ride in any Airflow, as they say the ride is fantastic (for the 30s anyway). Jay, I must say the 1934 models looked awesome, as they carried out the original art deco design the best. Chrysler bent to public outcry for a more traditional grille to boost sales. I guess the Airflow looked like a toaster, if you’re talking about a mid-1930’s toaster. The Scion xB, Nissan Cube and Kia Soul look like a modern, ugly toaster. These cars are engineering marvels and grossly underrated, in my opinion.

The Airflow is my favorite no matter the comparison. It was so far ahead of its time! It's a shame that the public did not appreciate and prefered old fashioned designs and techniques. You compare the Airflow's profile to the VW Beetle. Alright!, but the Peugeot 402 of the same era is more similar. It is also a larger car, capable of transporting up to 7 passengers or more in the Familiale version. Of course, much less luxurious and less powerful (European standard 4 or 6 cylinders engine) than the Chrysler. The headlights located BEHIND the front grill was another solution to avoid disturbing the profile. The car was very used and abused during WW2.

Chrysler had many early production problems with these cars, delaying delivery. This gave GM and the auto press time to throw negative press saying the car was no good. I would guess that insurance companies looked at the body and charged a premium too. The first year had some other design oddities such as no exterior deck lid, you had to lift up the rear seat to put luggage in the trunk. The seats had chrome arms that made getting in and out awkward. I had read somewhere years ago that the engine was designed to fall out during a severe front impact supposedly to keep the engine from impacting the firewall. I would also guess it was far more expensive to produce than expected. You did miss the two way front door window design. There is a little lever by the vent wing, in one position the whole window including the vent window rolled down. The other position allowed the big glass to roll down leaving the vent window in its usual location. The aerodynamic story was fact not just marketing bs. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaHOlZqliqpgmrssi=fs8icLBOLlhQX_gR Here is an actual Brochure showing the trunk access on page 17. Great job Jay, enjoy your enthusiasm for the less mainstream classics!

Hell yeah I wanna do a Durant. I haven't found one yet. Goal is to cover at least one car, American manufacturer from 1930-1964 with cars obviously outside of those parameters starting the branch into the 20 little bit more it seems like that era 1930 of 1964 is what most people come to this channel to watch and I really try to cover cars that nobody else really covers Totally will I'll try and do one this year =)

@@What.its.like.The KZbin channel David Banks @ dynamitedork has a short video of a Durant 1925 enclosed car from Nethercutt collection museum which is in California, greater LA area. It might be a good idea to contact the channel. He answers immediately the comments the way you do. Good luck! You have something in your channel that messes up the algorithms: even when I search What it is like in KZbin the search engine doesn't give your channel exept maybe scrolling to the seventh choice. It give all non fitting names but your channel name. Maybe that's the reason you accrue subscribers so slowly?

All the parts of the styling are great, but somehow the sum doesn't equal all the parts. It was a bold move by Chrysler but the public wasn't looking for boldness at that point and they certainly didn't want any part of a car which the engine might fall out of. WYR you know I'll take the Packard, and then the Caddy. The Airstream looks snazzy and the Airflow kind of dumpy. Odd and sad that they have to remove the ashtrays for the auction showing to prevent theft. People should be a lot better than this- it ain't hard to do.

The similarity between the VW Type 1 (Beetle) and the Chrysler Airflow were not coincidental. The infamous Chancellor of Germany at that time (initials AH, trying not to get censorbot deleted) was enamored with the design of the 1934 Airflow, having seen it in a magazine. AH pronounced it the most beautiful vehicle ever fashioned, and tried in vain to get one delivered to Poland. When he sketched the design of the Beetle on a napkin and gave it to Ferdinand Porsche to complete, he was sketching an Airflow from memory.

I like Airflows, but much more the later ones than the first one. The waterfall grille (or absence of grille) of the 1934 cars was their downfall. People will always anthropomorphise the front of cars, and for me the 1934s have the face of a dullard. And while I've never sat in one, I imagine that it was very difficult to know where the front of the car was. As for the rest of the car, it was 1937 styling in 1934. I've seen cars in the 80s and 90s that I thought looked ridiculous, but a couple of years later everything else looked the same way and it'd become normal. Damn shame the Airflow flopped.

I would rather have Chrysler. Usually I would choose Huppmobile but this version doesn't appeal to me. These versions of Packard and Cadillac look like me to cars of the era. Hudson is way too similar to Huppmobile, hence not for me. Besides, in the 1950ties only Chrysler wouldn't feel outdated.
