Back in that time period this was a very advanced, well enginered vehicle - and being so advanced for its time, I believe that scared the public off.
@dlwatib5 жыл бұрын
The Great Depression and major execution faults had more to do with it than lack of public acceptance of the styling, though retrospectively that gets all the blame. The public is always very slow to warm up to any vehicle where the engine may depart from its mounts at 80 mph and go crashing who knows where. Wikipedia says the cars sold in respectable numbers in their first year (1934) at 10,839 units. Reliability issues meant that sales in subsequent years were dismal by comparison even though the styling was toned down, as we see in this example.

This is the best looking Airflow I've ever seen. Stunningly gorgeous with the grill work extending to include the front of the hood as well as that two tone burgundy/ maroon paint scheme plus the purple fenders. Super ventilation including cowl induction, windshield ventilation and vent windows. Who needs air conditioning? I'm not sure if the engine was a straight 8 or a straight 6 but in any event I think it was rated at about 110 hp, around 45 hp more than the Ford V8 of the day. It certainly needed all that power since this car was very well constructed and correspondingly weighty. Beautiful fit and finish throughout. All in all quite a dream car! I never understood why it didn't catch on with the public.
@brustar51526 жыл бұрын
The 37 last year design attempted to assuage the public's disdain for the ramped over front grill of the earlier models by returning to the more conventional pie shaped front nose ....it failed. The car was way ahead of it's time in both design and structural build methods.

The Airflow was ahead of its time, but people were alienated at how it looks, not to mention that it was the height of the Great Depression at the time of its release.
@artdecotimes29423 жыл бұрын
The height of the great depression was 1933, 1935 was the end of the great depression entirely when we were finally back on our feet, you can so easily tell by production through January to December of 1934.

Its sad..really, most folks nowadays just see a model a in this time frame of the 1930's. They see depression, then war, and then 1950...we had lives during these times..best times, the great depression wasn't as "great" as people make it out to be..lasted all but 4-1/2 years before stopping, F.D.R being a major source for our get up. Bless that man and his lovely wife, and our once lovely nation so prickled with power and pride, a nation to he called united not surfaced with ridiculous phones from angry representatives hardly representing anything as they make meme after meme of nonsensical misaligned text..in the horrid modern era.

Sounds like advertiser public brainwashing of the public similar to the Tucker demise. Anytime something too far ahead arrives, it's an easy target for competitors to label it a freak thus a bad investment for consumers. People believed a lot more bullshit, and even trusted the government much more back then. The JFK hit, and Vietnam turned the country to be way more suspicious and skeptical from then on. And now, thanks to the internet, we have much more means of independent research. Einstein said: (paraphrasing) 'Great ideas are met with violent opposition from mediocre minds.'
