I am now 70, born in East London. I remember family parties where these songs were sung with my grandmother on the piano. I would give 5 years of my life to have one night if those post war family nights.

Growing up in the 1950s Flanagan and Allen were often on TV and Radio and their songs seemed to reflect the serenity on that decade. Public service was a virtue and even back then pensions and pay was often enough for families to live decent lives without the luxuries that came in the 60s and 70s. Is today's society with I/T social media, and mass TV, better than the pubs, cinemas, and social clubs from the 50s and 60s? It was often reported that Bud Flanagan passed away shortly after performing the opening song for Dads Army in 1968. It's hard think of anyone else who could deliver this patriotic ensemble better than him. And still heard 53 years later in the repeats of Dads Army.

I love Flanagan and Allen - charming songs - ease the mind - also very funny in the most English of ways.

Dear old Kenny Cantor used to perform this in homage to this duo at Kessingland Beach Holiday back in the late 80's/90's. Used to do a sterling job too - last of the true old time variety acts!

They were my Grandparents generation and I would guess almost unkown by anyone much under 60. Bud still regularly heard on BBC repeats of Dad's Army with probably his last recording.

Dark days but with people in the same boat my parents always said they were best days for them, hard to imagine now

True. Todat, many people are too obsessed with material possessions, status and being 'offended' to live the sweet life as was.

Hometown is my favourite Flanagan and Allen song, I have it on a set of Bbc Radio favourite tunes and had it on in my car earlier today, wonderful!

Hearing this reminds me of how good Bernie Winters and Leslie Crowther were at 'doing' Bud and Chesney...

***** Yes I agree, they did a great job of that and it was nice to think that Chesney was still around to witness that and other tributes of around that time. Sadly they have all passed on now...

wordsmith52 Christopher Timothy and Roy Hudd. I think they did a musical, Underneath the Arches.
