I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon without a major rebuild, so what's the difference??
@piiluja2 жыл бұрын
He turned engine with starter at least 5 minutes before it actually started, this long start-up builds up also oil pressure. That oil doesn't have to be 80 years old there. if it was after last oil change just occasionally started, then oil quality doesn't deteriorate much in not used engine. How dirty is the oil is possible to check from oil dipstick, not seen in video but I have reason to believe that he checked oil level even before connecting battery. Despite of long stay and cold weather starter turned engine quite fast meaning that it has relatively low viscosity oil in it. However, this engine looks a lot like Gaz-51 R6 engine with modification to fit air filter into engine bay. If so then it's not 80 years old and is not rare also.

The engineering behind these old Mercedes was incredible. In fact, right up to the mid 90's Mercedes, cost no object, engineering and build quality was/is just legendary, and they really were in a class of their own, with cars like the W140 S-Class. Then it all started going horribly wrong after rival companies upped their games, and Mercedes found themselves with some stiff competition when it came to their flagship models, from the likes of BMW and Lexus. Alas, instead of taking the bull by the horns and fighting back accordingly, they chose to cut corners in order to save money. My neighbour, for instance, parked up his 2003 C200, over the winter. When he came to start it around six months later it was having none of it. For nearly two days he, and a couple of his friends tried in vain to get this thing back to life, but it refused to even cough, let alone start. I'm all for progress, but modern cars are so damn complicated, they are almost impossible to find any fault without tens of thousands of pounds worth of diagnostic equipment at your disposal. With older cars though, it's either down on compression, it's not getting fuel or there's no spark. Simple.

Amazing the starter hasn't burned up, but it may have been damaged by this abuse. Amazing also the battery lasted all that time that's pretty rough on the electrical system esp. a six volter they draw so much current... It acts like it's starved for fuel you should add fuel to the intake, look for a vacuum leak, check timing, check the plugs, or just try something different to get the fuel mixture more correct. If everything is right it will start quickly, instead of just cranking it to freakin death.
@mahatma1717 жыл бұрын
Dave Bloxham it didn’t even sound like it had the best of compression after sitting dry all those years. Then just to rev the snot out of it when they did get it to run....ugh. God....what a shame. Forgive them for they know not what they do - this old car is a piece of history and they treat it as if it were some junker from the 90`s...... I hope this great car will meet a person who appreciates it... It first should be brought into a garage - then disassembled - the whole technic overhauled - and everything else fixed... Or just put an ad in a journal for veteran cars......they will come from all over to get her....

When we used to live in Wisconsin the only car that would start like clock work was my 1978 Monte Carlo, I had 7 vehicles in my driveway, even a Ford Mustang, the square body type practically new, useless in winter, had a Pontiac Grand am, Mercury, a GMC SUV, my wife hated it, 🤣 ...
