I knew an unscrupulous genius who bolted a Chevy engine to a Ford transmission & stuck it in a Chrysler vehicle. Then he sold it to an old lady and made a profit. He was fun to hang with. Even drilled a hole through the side of a refrigerator to keep his beer keg cold and have the convenience of an external tap.

Having been brought up around old airplanes and adding my love for all things automobile, I found this project mesmerizing! The combining of the Golden age of aviation and the automobile became greater than the parts! It reminded me of seeing an elderly couple, who'd been together for 60 years, but were sitting on a park bench, holding hands, and looking at one another with that same spark they'd felt for one another at eighteen! Together, that spark lit a fire. That fire not only warmed their lives, but those of everyone that saw them together, and realized that true love that lasted a lifetime, did exist! That's how this project made me feel when I saw how that old Cessna/Jacobson Radial and all the other aviation influence made that old '39 something it never dreamed it could be!!! The guys from Denver really did both aviation and the classic car world a favor bringing the two together in such an amazing way!! Thank you to them, and to Jay for showing us!

I've seen this truck many times online, but never seen it run. That is awesome! My dad would of loved this video. He was a aircraft mechanic for over 50 years as well as my brother and me both were. Our specialty was aircraft restoration. We lost dad in 2011. Both myself and my brother are both retired from our business as well. I enjoy all of your videos Jay! Keep em coming!

I sure do miss those two guys in my life. This truck reminds me of those days. Life is for doing the unusual, having fun, and never being stuck in that rut of being practical all the time. That way you get wonderful projects just like this truck. Thanks Jay for reminding me of that experience in my own life.

Great video Jay, America loves you and the great cars! I bet most folks don't know that Sherman Tanks in WW2 originally had 9 cylinder radial engines as their drive engines! Later a crazy complicated 30 cylinder Chrysler multibank diesel, and then finally its best engine (according to the Army) was the DOHC, 4 valve per cyl, flat plane crank, all aluminum 1100cu inch Ford V8. It was 500Hp and over 1000ftlbs all in by 2600 rpm! Cams had no belt or chain it was a incredible gear driven assembly. It was ironically, originally a 12 cylinder fighter aircraft engine designed in the late1930s, that Ford chopped off 4 cylinders from. (Rolls Royce had already secured the aircraft fighter engine contract unbeknownst to Ford.) It was by far the easiest Sherman tank engine to service and was extremely dependable despite being all aluminum and many many thousands of lbs lighter than the other engines. 30,000 were made according to historical figures.

The yard "Tow truck" I used was a late 70's dodge 1/2 ton with a 1940's era human powered winch. Turn the wheel 15 times and Up she goes. Flip a lever and use a glove to friction control spin 'er down. Founder Norm, was eco-minded(sarc)before green. I was "promoted" to winchman after my predecessor left. I knew there would be the day when the old man was laid to rest. Nice job on expansion Gary! Looks like you have the property all the way to old man Svigels place too. Sheridan/Denver, Co. My understanding of aircraft engines is that the RPM redline is only about 1500-2000. I would have liked to know the final drive ratio from the crank to the rear wheels. If I am correct it must be close to 1:1 or less to get any kind of speed up. Obviously, torque is more than sufficient. Also, This is the first time I have seen a piston aircraft engine run without a prop. I have always assumed that some kind of prop was needed to act as a flywheel. A very fascinating piece of engineering and first rate craftsmanship! Thanks for the closeup look.

Fantastic project. Great execution. Friend of mine, Ed Moser, built circa 84 a street legal Indy Car. March body, handbuilt frame powered by 2 1000cc Kawasaki motorcycle motors. Chain drive with jackshaft. His follow up project was 32 Ford High Boy with carbon fiber frame with helicopter engine. Car now is in Lincoln Nebraska (or was in 2005) at Speedway Motors I believe it is. Huge mail order. Lost touch with Ed. Miss that guy.

It's probably just clear coated. That's basically a finishing coat you might have over a normal paint job but in this case there is no base paint job. I have seen a few raw steel cars done in the same way. The body itself just looks like polished steel to me. Really if they had done it in aluminum or stainless there would be nothing left of the original truck with this type of finish.
@ItchyKneeSon

I heard from a motorhead friend that simply coating steel with clear would still allow it to oxidize. I've seen a stripped chopped rat rod VW bug and a bus at a show before, but didn't get a chance to ask the owner how he did it. I did, however, see a VW Caddy/Rabbit truck at the same show with a bare steel, rusted, but reinforced, engine bay that the guy just sprayed with thick oil constantly to keep it from rusting. I'm guessing these guys used some kind of sealer on this, though.

As a pilot I find this hotrod thrilling to say the least. I would have found a way to keep a 4 bladed wood club prop on it like the one's used on engine stands during testing. This would help the cooling altogether. I am very familiar with the 300 "Shaky Jake". You will find this engine on Waco biplanes, Gullwing Stinsons and a few airshow modified Stearman biplanes. All pilots love radial engines, especially for the sound. This car sounded like an airplane cranking, but not while running because it's missing the huge propellor noise. When I saw the interior in this car I knew these builders were genius designers. That is by far the greatest idea for an interior I have ever seen. Jay should have bought this car on the spot. Nothing can beat it for comments at car shows. I might prefer this to a Dussenburg.

I wonder if Gary calls both his sons "dummy" (hope everybody catches that reference). I've spent a lot of time at Colorado Auto ... always an amazing selection of parts both foreign and domestic. Back in the day, they always had some esoterica (fiat 850s, NSU Prinzes, Jags, MG roadsters, Triumphs, etc.). I can still hear Gary on the PA ... "Everybody out of the yard, the yard is now closed" _always followed by a whistle_

Its such a great work of art. I think it would be worth mounting two 44 gallon drums on the back for extra cooling oil. With cooling fins all over the drums. And hopefully it could be on the road for a longer time each drive before getting too hot. A real fun truck and a credit to the Dad and his sons.

Just curious because most people who arent too big on legalization and dont understand much about the substance as you called it drink alcohol at least on occasion which is a thousand times worse for your health and mental well being.
