I knew an unscrupulous genius who bolted a Chevy engine to a Ford transmission & stuck it in a Chrysler vehicle. Then he sold it to an old lady and made a profit. He was fun to hang with. Even drilled a hole through the side of a refrigerator to keep his beer keg cold and have the convenience of an external tap.

Having been brought up around old airplanes and adding my love for all things automobile, I found this project mesmerizing! The combining of the Golden age of aviation and the automobile became greater than the parts! It reminded me of seeing an elderly couple, who'd been together for 60 years, but were sitting on a park bench, holding hands, and looking at one another with that same spark they'd felt for one another at eighteen! Together, that spark lit a fire. That fire not only warmed their lives, but those of everyone that saw them together, and realized that true love that lasted a lifetime, did exist! That's how this project made me feel when I saw how that old Cessna/Jacobson Radial and all the other aviation influence made that old '39 something it never dreamed it could be!!! The guys from Denver really did both aviation and the classic car world a favor bringing the two together in such an amazing way!! Thank you to them, and to Jay for showing us!

Great video Jay, America loves you and the great cars! I bet most folks don't know that Sherman Tanks in WW2 originally had 9 cylinder radial engines as their drive engines! Later a crazy complicated 30 cylinder Chrysler multibank diesel, and then finally its best engine (according to the Army) was the DOHC, 4 valve per cyl, flat plane crank, all aluminum 1100cu inch Ford V8. It was 500Hp and over 1000ftlbs all in by 2600 rpm! Cams had no belt or chain it was a incredible gear driven assembly. It was ironically, originally a 12 cylinder fighter aircraft engine designed in the late1930s, that Ford chopped off 4 cylinders from. (Rolls Royce had already secured the aircraft fighter engine contract unbeknownst to Ford.) It was by far the easiest Sherman tank engine to service and was extremely dependable despite being all aluminum and many many thousands of lbs lighter than the other engines. 30,000 were made according to historical figures.

R.I.P. Norman Sample. I knew Gary Corns. Not well though. I had an 8 month stint as a wrecker driver moving cars inside the yard in 1991. The yard "Tow truck" I used was a late 70's dodge 1/2 ton with a 1940's era human powered winch. Turn the wheel 15 times and Up she goes. Flip a lever and use a glove to friction control spin 'er down. Founder Norm, was eco-minded(sarc)before green. I was "promoted" to winchman after my predecessor left. I knew there would be the day when the old man was laid to rest. Nice job on expansion Gary! Looks like you have the property all the way to old man Svigels place too. Sheridan/Denver, Co. Check out jays car with a tank engine. Its awesome. This car barely drives, basicly it doesn't. It could drive for only a few minutes.

YO LENO! How about you show US that bike with a radial engine in the front wheel. SHOW US MORE OF Y O U R vehicles and tell us the stories behind them. I'm sure others agree. Not that I don't like theese shows, they're great. But still, it's Jay Lenos garage.

Yo Leno, The real interesting vids are your buys, stories and fixes! What I'm really curious about is the stories how you came about finding, especially negotiating and how thorough the inspections are! I remembered the radial bike, Finally a cool Plymouth! Way to many rivets! Looks like a guy from 1995 with both arms tattooed with tribal art!! 3000 rivets to many?

The real doktorbimmer True, but they are very similar in appearance. A radial wouldn't work for the Megola's application.

Just found this episode. Thank you for spending a little time on the Clark Tug. Many years ago I spent an evening trying to get a Clark to do donuts in soiled hay. It was tough. Never really got the rear to break loose but I did start a little fire. Good times. Oh the truck is pretty neat too. The V-Drive was a clever idea.

My understanding of aircraft engines is that the RPM redline is only about 1500-2000. I would have liked to know the final drive ratio from the crank to the rear wheels. If I am correct it must be close to 1:1 or less to get any kind of speed up. Obviously, torque is more than sufficient. Also, This is the first time I have seen a piston aircraft engine run without a prop. I have always assumed that some kind of prop was needed to act as a flywheel. A very fascinating piece of engineering and first rate craftsmanship! Thanks for the closeup look.

Well built machine I love how the team put it all together and made it look like an air plane and to use a work TRUCK to boot. Keep the salvage yard going. I'm from the bay area of California where they built the battle ships we had one of the biggest salvage yards. Then they came out with regulations where they all had to shut down.

+quintessenceSL wind tunnel testing has overridden any real possibility of any new and unique designs that will draw the eye like and old car can. Safety regs have destroyed what little astatic appeal you can squeeze out of a car. A modern charger or challenger is just about the best you can hope for aside from the super cars.

The comments are highly positive. I Love the body style, it's really impressive. Part of me wants to be cruel and talk about Dr. Frankenstein and his Monster. However, the skills required to pursue this Project are truly admirable and amazing. Congratulations are obviously in order. If the vehicle had a powerfull V8 Turbo instead of a Cessna's heart, I would be ready to place a bid. Engaging the 2 sons reveals a fantastic, united Family. And that alone, is Worth Millions. Thank you Jay -- your managed to have a very generous Guest. Endowed with fabulous mechanical skills, a great deal of patience and fair-play. Warm Regards, A.

..not sure he'd want to...what a butchered up mess...you can even still see the rough seams and welds where they "chopped the top"...hey, I'm not against building what you like, but I wish they hadn't shown a picture of the truck before they "built" it....made me sick..a very restorable solid, mostly complete original truck...now all hacked and cut up...we really need to use old bits and pieces and fabricate stuff to "build" stuff like this, not use complete original vehicles...I see this type of tragedy on those "reality TV" hot rod shows a lot...not enough survivors out there to keep doing this type thing...and it's all hacked to h@ll, not just some modifications that can be changed back...once everyone gets tired of playing with this "novelty item", it's just going to be a pile of junk sitting around....

Like my dad's tractor with a 327 chevy race engine...you could actually get a speeding ticket with it. Luckily-we only saw a cop about once a year when the new rookie got lost.
