Welcome to Episode 35 of the wooden boat liveaboard journey. In this episode, I started back working in the v-berth removing rotten wooden supports and replacing them with teak. I also replaced the Mahogany trim to the forecabin plywood sides on both the port and starboard side. My channel is dedicated to sharing the process of restoring and repairing a beautiful 1940 Seaplane Tender into a fully functional liveaboard.
The boat is a 1940 seaplane tender initially used by the Royal Air Force during WW2. The hull is built of double diagonal mahogany planks and oak ribs. My parents bought this boat more than 30 years ago and used it for weekend trips up the lake. Unfortunately, as they became busy with work it was left idle for many years falling into disrepair. So I've started to invest time into repairing the boat and transforming it into a liveaboard.
I'll document the process as best I can and release weekly episodes here on my KZbin channel. So make sure to subscribe if you haven't already.
Thanks for the support, As always stay productive and have fun creating!

Personally I’d leave the brass screws on show, they look nice, honest.

You and your Dad are doing a really great job on the old Gal. It does have a bit of an Industrial look to it, rather than like a Mahogany Italian Runabout. That said, leave the screw heads alone, but properly sealed with a good varnish. Main thing is you got the rot taken care of. Bravo.

Sailing with Geordie is a man who has a lot of experience and tips for dealing with old wooden boats ..Hes out in BC Canada. Its hard to go better than brass in hardwood ... Unless the wood is big enough to pocket the fastener and fit a matching wood plug. 👍🏼

Take the screws out once the epoxy has cured fully, drill holes out and add mahogany dowels. It's a trim piece not structural, the epoxy is doing all the fixing work as it is, gluing dowels in will help prevent joint working open at the ends as the joints move about. 🙂

You're right about the sawdust. I use wood flour that I get from my electric sander bag. Personally I think the brass screws look fine and they should oxidise in time and go green which also looks nice.

Are you planning to extend the cabin over the aft deck - it seems to be wasted space. I guess the engines are under the hatch but there must be something you can do. It is not as if you need a big sun deck in Eire! Good luck from South Africa!

All of the old British campaign furniture was mahogany with exposed brass hardware and screws. A great look. Greetings from South Carolina.

As has been said before, leave the brass screws on show but ensure the slots are lined up, with a vertical piece of wood, vertical slots. Varnish quickly so the brass doesn’t tarnish.

Love your work. I'm no expert. Just thought I'd say that if you can find a way to seal the countersunk screws and still show the natural dark woodgrain and the brass color of the screws - that looks nice.

Hello, my friend, great video, you going to put new windows in the boat

I have resealed all the cabin windows and re bedded them so there is no need to put new ones in. The wheelhouse cabin will get two large windows where the plywood is temporarily in place. Thanks for watching.

Through experience I've come to realize that epoxying two weather-exposed boards together, and also screwing them together, is inviting rot. The epoxy holds better than the screws. The screws just provide channels for water intrusion.

Can you countersink the brass screws deeper and then put dowel pins in it?
@LakesideProductions

Unfortunitely I can not as I don't have a lot of depth to work with.

To bad didn't have silicon bronze screws, then just leave them showing and use Helmsman Spar Urethane from Minwax to cover the brightwork, thats what I did with my 1968 Grand Banks

May I ask why you're using flat head screws, I presume it's to keep it original in style but it seems so troublesome.

As much as possible I don't want to mix metals. I want to prevent delignifaction and galvanic action as much as possible. Unfortunately we did have to use stainless steel screws for the bow repair. I would have preferred brass or bronze. A carpenter who worked on the boat in the past before my parents also used lots of iron screws which caused damage even within the interior of the rooms but nothing severe. Thankfully

If you want to cut way down on work time.....Stop using slotted screws! Use stainless Philips screws or secondly brass philips screws.
