Running out of radios to fix, old Buzz digs out a beat-up 1946 Gilfillan Bros radio made in Los Angeles, Calif. After initial checkout, Buzz applies power to this radio and hopes for smoke!!
Will it happen? Getting the rusted and corroded copper grille up to snuff is going to take
a lot of paint and good old fashioned hard work. The cabinet is in 2 pieces and also in bad shape. Watch as Buzz glues it together, then refinishes the cabinet back to its former glory. Dickel is also on hand to research the Gilfillan Brothers .... Then watch the reveal as Buzz dreams of
Ann-Margret as he listens to a 1961 romantic tune......Enjoy!
Music
The Beau Hunks - The Beau Hunks Play the Original Little Rascals Music - (1995)
Guy Lombardo - What Will I Tell My Heart? - (1937)
The Angels - Till - (1961)

I just inherited a similar radio from my Grandparents estate. It's a model 56A that is in fantastic shape and works great! I remember listening to this radio while playing pool with my cousins. It has a place of honor in my office. Every time I turn it on I remember my grandparents and extended family and all the good times I had with them.

Oh boy. STUNNING restoration! Buzz. You do know what you're doing. Right? This one was one of the hardest, I hope you know. Boy oh boy Buzz. lol. I started laughng out loud when you dropped the "yeee-hohhh" bite. Then when you pushed dear ol' John under the bus, again, I laughed out loud even louder. But when the the skid mark first appeared.. I lost it. In bed. Whilst laughing. Thank God all I did was, you know. No cleanup in Aisle A needed. Buzz, I knew I was in trouble when you set up for the reveal. I could feel it. Something you did, and I'm not sure what it was, was a tip off that the ending was gonna be hard. And it was. Dear Buzz1151... I'm trying to grow up gracefully. I'm 'only' 61 but with cardiac 'issues'. Your genius videography and story development was over the top with this one. I'm done crying now. It was hard to type this. Your endings can be so very, very profoundly sad - in a way that I don't even understand. Maybe I'm afraid. Sometimes I just can't seem to figure out where all the years have gone. Sometimes I feel lost in time...... thank you so very much, you amazing man :)

I have a Troy radio model 14 that I intend to restore that was made in the early or mid 30s. The plate on back says it was made in Los Angeles and gives a street address as 1815 Venice Blvd (same as Gilfillan). This is a TRF 4 tube radio that has 58, 56, and 2A5 tubes along with an 80 rectifier. The price for a NOS 80 rectifier seems to be around $30.

No doubt some tubes are getting pricer, but this guy sell tubes very reasonably, but the turn around time is a couple of weeks, Cheers, Buzz findatube.com/

Very nice. I hate to mention it, but in the reveal isn't there a noticeable bend at the center of the top of the face plate flange, where it contacts the wood panel? I was impressed that you removed so much of the pitting. I didn't like that you obscured the lettering on the IF transformers. That radio in the background looks gorgeous. Personally, I would have used a 68uF in place of 60uF - increasing filter capacitance rather than decreasing from spec. Your skill with wood stain and toning is impressive. That cabinet was improved significantly. The background music goes along very well with the project.

G-I-LFI-LAN spells Gilligan...wait, that's not right, wasn't it Harrigan? Someone said that those Solar caps never go bad, lol. I think it was Lucky Larry, but I could be wrong. That Packard Bell radio on Gilligan's Island had a fake telescoping antenna on it as it was only AM and already had an internal antenna. On the first couple episodes of that show they had a Hallicrafters S-40...but they had a microphone hooked up to it as if it were a two-way, lol. I was watching The Munsters yesterday and Grandpa had a chassis and a horn speakers and blew an inch of dust off an ST tube and said it was an "old" tube, plugged it into the radio and started receiving news of Nero fiddling while Rome burned. Grandpa said "Boy, these are some really old tubes"! Noticed on another episode they had what appeared to be an Atwater Kent cathedral set. I had a big Sparton Console years ago that sounded awesome (had to let it go when I moved)...now I'm jealous, :) "Scotched In Scotland" was a great 3 stooges episode. My favorite quote was Shemp saying, "Hey Lorna, How ya doon?" Suggestion, When the metal is pitted, use some body filler on it, then sand & paint. Little Gilfillan turned out pretty nice.
