Who would have thought that such a small bend in the con rod would make all that difference. Well found.

Thanks Terry, so nice to get it running 😀

I appreciate your videos Mark - a great acknowledgement to the hobby. The conrod not only looked bent but the small end hole looks ovalated so maybe make a new rod? When a diesel dies off as in the video it's definitley getting hot and over compressed so backing off the compresion will allow it to not only pick up but cool a little too. Usually when a diesel is running out of fuel the revs will increase and it wil burp a little - you can check this out when running by nipping the fuel tube. Keep up the great work 👍👍

Thanks for the comment, its appreciated. It does look like the rod is worn in the picture, but that is just an illusion created by the relief around the gudgeon pin hole, it's actually has very little wear. I understand what you are saying about the engine dying off when hot and over compressed, but on previous runs, and there were quite a few, when it got to this point gently reducing the compression only caused it to miss fire, but opening the needle helped in maintaining the revs.

Well done Mark, it's a great feeling getting an old diesel running right! BTW looks cold there in the UK...

Yes, absolutely ready does feel good, weather wasn't too bad yesterday when I filmed this, it was about 5 degC, but today it's a hard frost! Thanks for the comment 😀

I had the same issue with a Merlin DC engine 40 years ago, the conrod was bend, the engine would not even start, it ran well after I straightened it.

Seems to be a bit better on the run. Looking at the picture of the rod, it looks like the pin holes are a bit worn, maybe fashion a new rod with the holes fitted to the pins and see if it runs better still.

Having many years experience with diesels I think that it wasn’t fuel shortage but perhaps over compression due to motor getting hotter and / or running rich, see the smoke. And the why it stopped was not fuel shortage, they usually speed as they go lean, it was more like over compression. I was expecting you to slacken it off or lean it out before some damage was done, bent Conroe . Much impressed by your straightening out but more so on you making up a needle valve assembly, how about a video on that, I’m sure many people would be interested. Thanks despite my comments I really appreciate your video.

Sounded overcompressed at the end of that run.
@MarkRobinson555Ай бұрын
@@ralphjohnson4041 Yes it does, but it was because it was struggling to draw fuel from the bottom of the tank as it's quite a distance. On previous runs I ha thought this and decompress it but that just made it worse.
