In todays video we have a little competition between a 25 year Old Stihl 036 Pro and a New MS 362 Chainsaw to determine which cuts faster. We were cutting a cherry log and a white oak for this test. I also used the RK 37 Compact Tractor and the RK by Top Dog Granite Grapple. The logs used are saw logs, I saved the best instead of cutting up for firewood.

I have my fathers old 038 super magnum. I cleaned it up and replaced all the old fuel lines. Tightened everything up and it runs like a champ. I’m so proud to have it. I believe he bought it mid to late 80s so over 25years old. So cool to take the family and collect firewood for the winter has become tradition in my family.

Mario Rivera I just acquired my uncles old 038 magnum 2 yesterday,still in great shape,cuts good for a saw built in the 80s,it says made in west Germany on side cover so it was made before the Berlin Wall fell. Took the big dogs off my 066 and threw them on the 038 and bought the biggest replacement dogs I’ve ever seen for the big old brute as a treat. Greetings from British Columbia😎

Looks like the "loop handle" on the 036 pro allows you to hold either side when cutting vertically. Nice featue. I was surprised you didn't flip the bar over when you switched chains. My brother taught me to do that to wear the bar evenly. He also taught me to fill the bar oil before the gas, to ensure i never ran it without bar oil.

I just found this channel yesterday. I'm finding it nice to rest my back from cutting and splitting, have a cup of coffee and be entertained/learn something. One of the Stihl's I use is the 261 with a 16" bar. She cuts well, but maybe the 362 would do more work in the same amount of time with a few more cc's? This is how I ended up with 4 saws! lol, I'll just go back to watching the videos and forget about that saw I HAVE to have. Thanks for the great videos. Cheers from the Paynter Farm.

Great comparison test between old and new. I think it would have been a better test if they both had the same size bar, and like was mentioned in another comment, just a free-weight cut or straight through with no rocking. Nice saw. When I was young my Dad had a “Strunk” with a pivotal bar.That was a good saw but it was a big lump of a thing and heavy. When it wore out he replaced it with a “McCulloch. That was a good saw but it had a problem starting if you shut it off when it was hot.That saw was replaced with a “Homelite” after my Dad lost patience with it and tossed into the pond in the winter of ‘61. When the “Homelite” wore out I replaced it with an “Oregon” which is still in service. I do enjoy all your videos especially the ones with the equipment reviews.

Those older Stihl saws from the 90s were great and so long as they are kept in good repair and you are not working them to death there is no need to replace them unless maybe you are a pro. I have a small Stihl 023 that I still run that is nearly 30 years old and though I do not use it a ton (just a home owner) all I have done is replace the spark plug and fuel line once, and of course the chain as needed. That lets you save up for a nice battery powered saw which I feel are more convenient for a home owner or that awesome fuel injected Stihl saw, only because nothing can compare to it today for power to weight ratio.

I just got an 026pro for $50 off the Facebook Marketplace. Runs great. Doesn't look to pretty but the plastic isn't all busted or anything and everything works. Was just the powerhead so it has a nice new shiny bar and chain on it now. Wanted one for a while and $50 was a damn steal. I have found some really good deals on there the past few weeks. I got a Makita DCS6421 too a couple weeks ago for $250, Husqvarna 372xp $400, Stihl MS440 with the full wrap handle and a new 28 inch Sugi Hara Bar and the original 20 inch bar and chain and he had an OEM top end just in case he needed it he threw in for $400. I found a Stihl 066 for $425 too and a Husqvarna 395xp for $375. At an auction I went to a month or so ago guy had 5 saws all Stihl but one only one of the saws interested me though the 046 I wanted that saw bad. It looked like he never once ran it. His other saws were all from the 60s-70s and all you could tell had plenty of use. The auctioneer said they found the 046 in his basement the rest were all in the barn so maybe he bought it new 20 years or however long ago and just never used it. I figured for $300-500 I could buy it. It brought $800. I ran the guy up to $800. Pissed me off. I was at $300 nobody else bid then right before he said sold dude came in so I let him have it. Hell a new one can't cost much more then he paid then there is a 10% fee plus tax so he probably ended up spending what he could have got a brand new version of that 046 for. At a weekly auction I go to I bought a Stihl 009L and Husqvarna 142 for $45 for the pair a month ago too. Both homeowner saws but for that cheap. I have a Redmax coming now I just bought on Ebay a day or 2 ago too. I can't think of the model but its the Husqvarna 439 basically a rear handle version of the 435T top handle saw. Seller had the display unit from his shop for $240. I was wanting rear handle version of a top handle for a while and really wanted a Stihl MS201c just they cost over double what I bought that saw for. Might still buy one if I can find another nice used one. Had one in my cart on Ebay for $340 but before I finished checkout somebody else bought it.

@@JesseLJohnson I have a 026 pro also, Ive seen them for 2k in the box a couple weeks ago. You got it for a steal , 50 $ . What a great price. Mine is a 1993 and it runs like it stole something....20 in. bar and RS chain, I took my dremel and ported the exhaust a little more and it screams. The 046 your talking about is mostly made out of Magnesium and better metal for the head... Its all the little things...The pencil pushers that dont even use the saws are cutting corners for better profits..Just like that bar oil got changed a couple years ago , and now it doesnt flow as good in colder weather...Oh ya , its a good idea to flip your bar every time you change chains...It will wear even and last longer. The bar oil holes are compatible just for that reason. Just trying to help ...peace

I had a 30+ year 36" Stihl. It cut through trees and logs without ever stalling, even 48 inch trunks. Being a bit dumb I let a neighbor borrow it to cut the logs on his front yard. He finally returned it after a few months by setting it in my garage when I went in for lunch. I found it a few days later. The chains was so dull it the teeth were almost gone, the Venturi was broken so the air filter cover could not attach. I couldn't get it to even fire once. Spark okay, fresh gas & oil. I looked down the Venturi with throttle wide open, the bottom of my piston was missing. Que sara sera. Never lend a tool. I own a few Stihl chainsaws along with other tools. They work good but not nearly as good as the old one.

A decade ago i bought a Jonered cs2186 and never touched the 038 magnum again. When the new stihl 661 come out i bought it as well... both the jonered and new stihl 661 are great saws, they have tons of grunt and start easy. With proper maintenance the jonsered is still like new and the 661 looks like it will go the distance as well. Saws that might have been designed in the late 70's are no match for a modern pro saw.

Mike, use 93 octane fuel. The higher octane is best. When a saw loses 400 rpms in a log, you're pushing too hard or the chain's dull. Let the chain do the cutting & the saw will last far longer. The better test of those saws would be if the newer 1 lasts as long as the older 1. Bet it won't. Far older Stihl mechanic & thanks for a great video.

I have an early MS 310 and a late MS 390. I purchased the 310 at the same time as an 018. Both right at the time of the cutover. The 310 would out-cut the 390 noticeably until the 390 had five to six tanks of gas run through it. You could hear the difference in the rpm. I was cutting green osage orange (hedge). Both great saws.

362 almost sounds like its winding out at higher rpm then the 038 right off the bat. Do you know if the chain speeds are suppose to be close to each other?

That brought back memories , used to run a fleet of them back in the late '80s early '90s when I was contract waste thinning Pines for the forestry in NZ , great light weight good handling robust saw - but a few of them had over run problems , might have been the fuel we were using ?

….. I am now using an 044 which I have had for over twenty years . Stihl must be the most reliable long lasting saw out there ,had an 028 - 038 - 036 -064 - 044 all were great in their own ways .

Some advice. When cutting in cold weather I use Echo Premium bar oil, because I think it oils better Thant Stihl Platinum, whips is my preferred bar oil in hot weather. I do not have an 036 but I do have a ms-360 and ms- 361 and they are great saws. I cannot tell you which one of the two saws cut the fastest, because they feel very similar. If they are different it is not in a measurable degree. What I like about the 360 is that it is the lightest of my big saws. I have never used a 362 so I cannot make a comment on it but my 360 and 361 do cut slower than my ms 660 but about the same as my ms- 391.

I'd like to have seen the test done with the same cutting technique used for both saws. You rocked the old 036 a lot more, while just holding steady and cutting with the 362. The saw can pull the full bar, by rocking you limit how much wood is in contact with the chain and slow down the overall cut.
@IndependenceIron
@IndependenceIron 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with this comment. I think the 036 would have been alot closer if both were cut straight down and no rocking.

I have a 19 or 20 year old 044 with a 24" bar and the only things I have replaced are 3 bars and a few chains . I was told by many professional loggers to never rock your bar on a downward cut .They tell me to let the motor and chain to do all the work and that it will cut faster plus your bars will last longer because your not putting excess down force on it . Never did time it to find out though . This saw will cut seasoned black locust as fast as most saws and has never failed me . Would be interesting to see if the old boys were not pulling my leg as far as rocking the saw though . I did notice in your video that you rocked the old saw forward a lot more. than the new one ?

I have an 028 woodboss with a 16" bar I bought in 1988, used it to heat my house for 20 years, then used it to cut down trees to make space for a new house. Still runs great. Had to replace all the vibration isolators last year. That's the only maintenance I've had to do other than clutches, bars and a spark plug. I kind of wish it would wear out so I could try a new one, but it just keeps running.

A Bed Planer and Joiner Planer after the Bandsaw Mill and Kiln... Plane a few boards of Cherry, Oak and if you find figure in some Maple... You'll be gob smacked by how beautiful the wood of your property is. Life changing stuff is planed hardwood [and even pine for tongue and groove... outstanding]. Think of Gun Stalks, Harvest Tables, Chests, Knife handles.. you get the idea.

GP Outdoors - these figures are without bar and chain; 036 Pro: 5.7 kg (12.6 lbs), fuel capacity 0.321 l (0.68 US pt); ms362: flush cut handle 5.6 kg (12.35 lbs), wrap handle 6.0 kg (13.21 lbs), fuel capacity 0.61 l (1.269 US pt). I hope this helps. Sorry, I did not put up the bar oil capacities. I own both saws. Once, Mike puts 5 tanks of fuel through the ms362 it will become a totally different beast. True story ✌

Hi Mike, Great video love that tractor. What Stihl chainsaw would you recommend for light use, cutting up trees etc on my property nothing too heavy duty. I have a Ryobi battery one which is fine for cutting logs for the fire etc but it's only 12" so no good for trunks etc.

Noticed on both cuts you used the dawgs on the 036 alot more, especially on the cherry. You would think that'd speed up the cut, but the results show otherwise. It was odd to see on both cuts how you used the dawgs so much different between saws. I wonder if something with vibrations had a different feel and subliminally had a influence on that?

Just found the video, I have an 036 it's 21 years old finally had to take it to the shop along with it's 460 magnum big brother. Both have cut Huge amounts of wood and the 460 I logged with for 3 years helping a friend out. I wouldn't trade either saw for any other brand out there, they have been reliable from the first day. Have you ever tried sharpening your brand new chain? Sounds crazy but give it a try it's worth it!

Works better than my Husky 435 that I've had to replace the coil twice and had it in the shop three times for carb adjustment. I will never buy a Husqvarna again Doesn't work as well and very hard to start after run for awhile.
