Today we check out the Stihl MS 500i Chainsaw, I believe this has been the most talked about saw ever! So far it has lived up to all the hype! This saw is a beast! Powerful, near instant acceleration, unbelievable power to weight ratio.

@@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans I have had this chainsaw for over a month and i had a question about yours have you has your air filter been seating properly because mine has not been and has been allowing fine saw dust in and around the intake and mine has been hard to start it takes 7 pulls when it is cold to get it to start. even after only letting it cool down for 10 to 20 minutes it takes 3 pulls to get it to go mine so far has been nothing but problems for me. There is one thing i can say about it is that it does have amazing power. Maybe you could take a look at the intake after you use yours more? I have talked to some people that have had the saw but they are not have any problems i am the only person that has been having so many problems it seems i bought a defective saw witch sucks because it was NOT CHEAP! Anyway great video keep up the good work.

I've used both Stihl and Husqvarna. Both companies make great saws, so you can't go wrong with either one. I settled on the Husqvarna years ago and have never regretted it. I have a 450 18" bar for small trees and limbs, and the 395 XP 36" bar for the big stuff. That saw is a beast. Stay safe, Mike!

Mike Weve had our 500 I for about a year Stan my partner brought them back from Germany when he went to see his parents over there, that saw can cut upside down we use the 36 inch bars its fast just because of the trees we have, you will love it your other saws will be jealous oh by the way when its down in the minus 30 to 50 below two pulls it starts right up our otther saws dont think so unless yo uh take them out of a very warm truck that the heater has been blowing on them so others just sit in shed now hardly ever used if ever why fight them when the 500I replaced them all

I just picked up one of these and it is freaking FANTASTIC. If you get that chain sharp and bury it in wood it will eat it. If you want to just limb or buck standing up it will spin that chain (and oil it) without any issues. It's about as much saw as I can handle, if I was a bigger guy maybe I would try something else, but this is about the limit.

I have had a silver set and a gold set of very similar glove liners for at least a really long time. Use them under my motorcycle gloves and under my work gloves, sawing in the wettest, coldest parts of winter. They work. I also have a set of “snow” gloves that have a pocket for a Hot Hands on the back of the Gortex lined glove.

I froze my fingers as a child, so cold weather is always a problem. One of the warmest and most flexible gloves I ever used were a simple wool liner and a leather shell.Color choices were green liner and black shell, the army was not fashion aware. These days I always look for a soft fleece type lining, Carrhart and Well Lamont have several available.

I like the fact you can use different bar length. I hope Sthil will use the fuel injection on all their chainsaws to help prevent flooding. The MS 250 is the one that has a tenancy to flood. Thanks for showing this chainsaw.

I really like the new Stihl 5000i . For Melissa my recommendation for gloves are the Milwaukee impact gloves. They have enough padding to absorb the impact and also provides a level of warmth. I have three Stihls. One is brand new with a 25"bar. However, I don't run them as often I could. I HATE the fuel and oil caps on them. I run a "Husky" 550xp most of the time when I'm doing trail work. I like Stihls and ran them for years until they change the caps. I don't like spending 10 minutes to get everything lined up. My first Stihl was an 030, then an 031, and when I was chopping cord wood for a living I used an 045. Someone new on the trail crew asked me how long had I been running as chain saw. I told them, not long, I bought my first saw in 1970! Boy have saws changed!

hat I do is put on a pair of the light blue Latex gloves on prior to putting on my normal gloves (either for work or play). This insulates my hands, and keeps them from getting wet. Also it keeps the smells (from the various gloves, chain saw fumes, wood splitter fumes/oil, etc.) from stinking up my hands. One other benefit is that they also act as a shock absorber for the vibration from the machines. This keeps my hands from cramping up while working.

I've had mine for 18 months now, its a great saw. I use it primarily for blocking out chainsaw carvings (shameless plug, dervishcarving on facebook :)). Its a FANTASTIC saw, instant response, superb cutting speed with a 21inch and a 36 inch bar. Love it. It has a couple of downsides though, the stihl bar is terrible (they always are) but thats easy to fix. The saw goes through fuel very quickly which isnt surprising given its rev speed, but that means you also need to clean the air filter regularly. I knock out the airfilter after every 2 or 3 refuels. Keep an eye on this, if it gets clogged your going to damage your saw. Also keep in mind the chain is running way faster than most normal saws, your chaps etc are probably not rated for the speed so you might want to think about that. Hands down the best £1k i spent last year though, definitely worth it.

(Colorado) Isotoner gloves provided both warmth and can be used with smart phones. Very comfortable. The fingers are coated to work on touch screens without taking the gloves off. You can find these gloves on Amazon too. A trick we've used in winter back country skiing is to use what we call an Over-Mit. It's a mitten that goes over your gloves when you want the additional warmth. Same trick as layering when dressing for winter. You'd be surprised on how much you can do with mittens. The mitten needs to be a wind breaker and water resistant. Be careful the mitten won't let your hand breath thus creating sweat and wet gloves, not good. The Gore-Tex mittens breath and are water resistant both. You can get Gore-Tex Gators too, which cover your calves and tops of your boots for trudging through snow. REI Coop will be your best bet for Gore-Tex mittens. You can remove the mittens when you need to use your phone but you shouldn't have to remove your gloves. Clip the mittens on you coats sleeves like you mother used to do. As we age, second childhood really does exist. LOL

Hey Mike your gonna love that saw . I got one a couple of weeks ago and i think you'll find it will liven up even more after a few tanks of fuel . First thing i did though was got rid of the stock spikes. I put on a set of larger spikes a chain roller catcher and put a 25" light weight bar on her . The larger spikes keep the saw from tipping forward when you set it down too . If you want a set of spikes the sthil part # is 1122 664 0501 and 1122 664 0506 and i don't recall the # for the chain catcher . Hope you enjoy the 500i as much as i have .

Good morning from NC! As far as warm gloves go, my go-to is hunting suppliers. They might be too bulky for you though. Or not wear well under heavy use. But archery gloves might have a solution. I’m in a truck bed cover building project. Can’t buy a shell in time for my deer hunting trip to the western Ozarks, so I needed a cap secure enough for an overnight at a hotel. I’m making a flat cover like a Tonneau. It’s temporary but I might keep it for a while even after I get the shell. We’ll see.

I like that new saw and the new tool rack is cool as well.

Awesome review Mike! I was lucky enough to stumble upon a dealer who had just got 4 MS500i'sthat morning. I opted for the 28 light bar and have since ordered a 32 light. This saw continues to impress and will only get better with time. Keep up the good stuff! Give Hunter a fist bump and I hope your tripod survived. Lol

Melissa, usually the gloves with the rubber you can at least swipe the screen. However I think with any glove for heat purpose you will have to remove the glove for texting.... Unless... You go to a cabelas or a hunting store and look for gloves that have various trigger finger type gloves. Also keep hand warmers in your pockets.

Melissa: I prefer a lined leather glove. Not a thick lining, but a thin lining like jersey cotton think t shirt thick. They are always wind proof and always soft and supple. Rough Rider brand is the least expensive $12 ( and my favorite) and lasts just as long as any other glove. Two pairs will get me through a winter of logging and wood processing ~40-50 cords.

I've seen several vids on this saw now and its pretty impressive. Like most things new/electronic, long-term durability is the big question mark. I know they've been running these saws overseas for a couple years, but is this a 10-20 year saw? time will tell.

Great question/point, Phil! It's a big investment. Those older saws were too (at the time) but turned out to be a great value - still running perfectly 20 years later!

M, I love the runners gloves by HEAD. Costco for $15. Tight fitting, have great tactility, you can run a touch screen phone with them on, very warm. I trail run all year long in Montana and my first three fingers on each hand really freeze up. These gloves save me from that. I use them hunting, ice fishing, etc. Now, to figure out how to stop the skin on my fingers from splitting in the cold/dry months! Enjoy your family/channel. Thanks!

Have tested the 500i for some 50 hours falling here in Sweden. It's a pretty good sturdy saw and easy to use. Fuel efficient and low emissions, especially on Aspen fuel. But as a born Husqvarna guy i had to return it back! :D Now I'm waiting for the new 2021 bigger Husky's to try them out. Have a good morning or afternoon as it is here in Sweden.

@@24revealer that’s the result of a flooded market. Oak isn’t worth anything when you cut and sell it in the logging business. Too many people went out and cut timber until it wasn’t worth anything. Like it is today. Until people quit cutting it, there won’t be a demand for it. It’s a shame for sure though. Oak is nice wood.

Just watched cotontop3's review of the 500i also. He's a professional arborist and admitted Husky fan and Stihl hater. That said, he also loved the the throttle response and low-end torque, thought it lost a lot on the top end. Not a surprise. I recently bought a new 660. While not fuel injected, the carb is computer controlled - adjusts for ambient temp, barometric pressure, fuel quality, etc. But I understand it also limits the peak RPM for the "first three fuel tank fills". So no doubt the 500i follows that company policy. The good news is your 500i will only get better! For me, though, I can't justify the $1400 MSRP, when it doesn't cut wood THAT much better than my MS361.

Good Morning all! For when I am out in the winter woods doing Search and Rescue with my dogs I use Outdoor Research gloves. They are incredibly warm. Down side is they are not work gloves but I do believe they have a lifetime warranty on them. I paid about $70 for them. Love the new saw Mike! How many saws do you own now? I'm up to 5 at the moment but I do have my eyes set on 2 or 3 more. When Husqvarna comes out with their version of the 500I I suppose I will add that to the list too!

I use the tundra grain pig one-finger gauntlet gloves from Dakota up here in the interior of British Columbia. I got them a few years ago for falling and gathering firewood in winter. and have used them hard ever since once it gets cold. I like them because they are warm, and I can still them on and off with my my cotton gloves I use for running saw. anyhow Melissa if you want warm gloves thats gonna be it. I dont know what the Temps get down there but up here we get from 20 Celsius to negative 30 Celsius and I've had no complaints. and yes I ordered one of these saws from my local shop. I've been in every so often asking about it. once ONE came in the guy called me and told me only ONE came in and it has my name on it. i sure did take it. just gotta sell few more loads of firewood then be able to bring it home. thy going for 1679 up here.

How does a $2,000 chainsaw and $50,000 tractor add up to what you save burning wood ? All my wood for winter comes to about $20 in gas & oil and a $300 Stihl that's 10 years old, that equals $50 for 8 months of burning wood to heat the 2 story house.
