I have been there many times, saw the smelter before it collapsed, and the worker housing before they had roofing and before the metal structures were installed. It's an incredibly spooky place at night. I know some kids who went down the big covered shaft using a jeep and a rope, but they found it was full of water. I'm stoked to see this.

Hi again! I use to camp at Swansee in the late 80's early 90's as a kid. None of of the grates where covering the shafts, roofs where not on the buildings and no fence around the smelter. I use to play in the two holes of the smelter and most of the wall where still up. Some of the place you went in with a family member. There used to be a addit ( I think) the hand a old stove in it that someone used as a home. Also, by the old hotel we for a Swansee 2 1/2 cent coin to use there. It is a neat place. There is some other town we camped at that had deep shafts with timber stand above it with cables attached. Always wonder what was down there. Maybe I can remember the name on days and you can show us. Thanks again for the great videos.

Lots of shafts, no drifts to speak of? Makes me wonder if the mineralization was in the form of vertical plugs for the most part. The first one you guys went in was the only indication of vein structures that were stoped out, but considering the waste piles there HAD to be a lot more drifts/crosscuts. Maybe they were just deeper down where the shafts are caved/flooded? Helluvan explore! Thanks for being crazy, Frank and Gly, so we can stay entertained!👍👍❤️❤️

@Exploring Abandoned Mines FYI Superfund sites are not allowed to fill in holes over a certain size because of harmful dust being stirred up. That is the reason cleanup is so expensive and time consuming. My area is a superfund site because of all the lead mines. The mines are so extensive that you can literally see peoples basements IN THE MINE looking up! Its pretty awesome. If a earthquake ever happened here every house would go for sure. lol Look up Bonne Terre Mines. Awesome videos!

Hello from the original Swansea, Wales! Was it named because of copper? Swansea in Wales was the copper hub of the world in the 19th century.
@exploringabandonedmines4 жыл бұрын
Yes is was also a Copper mine.
@fadedexile4 жыл бұрын
The ore from these mines was originally shipped to Swansea in Wales to be smelted! "When mining operations first began, the lack of smelting facilities meant that the copper ore had to be sent away for smelting. The destination for most of the ore was Swansea, South Wales, United Kingdom and it was sent by way of railroad to the Colorado River, and was then shipped from the Gulf of California around Cape Horn to the United Kingdom. Once a smelter was constructed in 1909, Signal took its new name from the previous location of the smelter they had used in Wales. As such, the destination of the ore sent for smelting remained the same. When the post office was established on March 25, 1909, it was under the name of Swansea" You could probably find a pile of rocks from Arizona near you!

Some nice colours in that mine. Nobody in their right mind would go down.....Frank qualifies (meant in the nicest possible way) ;o) Those covers, is it that they have not filled it in because there is still a lot of mineralisation and it may be viable to work it again one day maybe? We always strip our srt kit when it comes off, then you get into the routine of putting it back together, then you don't forget anything :o) Yes, dont forget to tie your "Oh shit" knot! The area is under the protection of the BLM and is considered a "special management area" they have added the roofing to the remaining workers houses as well. I believe they didn't fill them in because they wanted people to be able to see the shafts in a safe manner, they are trying to preserve the site. Most people who visit there are plenty happy to walk out on the metal and get a thrill standing over the hole and not feel the need to actually enter any mine shafts.
