Thanks for another excellent video! All branches of my family tree are represented in the 1950 census for Pratt County Kansas, waiting for me to find them. I am planning to volunteer with FS to check the Ancestry computer in several of the 37 ED"s for that county. In Kansas we had an annual city/county census during that period, listing heads of household and household size. The KS city/county census for 1950 is available on Ancestry. So I know exactly whom to look for, and where to look!

I am so excited about this census that I could burst! It is the first census that all three of my parents will be in. :) They were all born in the 1940s. My maternal grandfather spent time in a tuberculosis sanitarium, but I don't know where. Do you know how these types of situations will be handled? It is my understanding that college kids, in this census, were enumerated at the school, not with their parents' households. So, do you think those in hospitals would be enumerated at the hospital or counted for their home addresses? Thanks for all you do to help us with our research. Have a blessed week!
@GenealogyTV2 жыл бұрын
Yes! "Enumerators were instructed to enumerate each person at his or her “usual place of residence.” That is normally a simple concept. It’s the place the person considers to be home or would name in reply to the question, “Where do you live?” “As a rule it is the place where the person usually sleeps.” Thus, the enumerator was to count members of the household who were: - Living at home - Temporarily absent “on vacation, visiting, or on business.” - In a hospital but expected to return in a short period of time. - New-born babies who had not yet left the hospital. - Students attending a school below the college level who resided in another place. - Live-in domestic or other employees who slept in the same dwelling unit. - Boarders or lodgers who regularly slept in the same dwelling unit. - Military servicemen stationed in the vicinity who lived and slept off post. (Those on post would be enumerated on post.)" historyhub.history.gov/community/genealogy/census-records/blog/2021/04/07/1950-census-usual-place-of-residence
@suzannemcclendon2 жыл бұрын
@@GenealogyTV I understand that it is a simple concept. I am not having trouble understanding the concept. The reason that I had a question about it is that in something else that I saw, the person said in this census, people would be counted where they actually were at the time, so, college kids getting enumerated at the school, etc. I just was not sure how they would handle hospitals/sanitariums. Unlike a college where you can assume a kid will be that semester, you can't assume anything with a hospital stay. Also, if I said something that upset you in another comment, I apologize. That was not my intention at all.

@@suzannemcclendon, I'm wondering the same thing especially knowing a distant cousin was in a special facility according to what her niece told me. This distant cousin was born with some sort of disability -- perhaps what is now called Downs Syndrome-- and was "institutionalized".
@suzannemcclendon2 жыл бұрын
@@scGenMOT Hi Shari, I have not yet been able to find anything definitive about hospitals, sanitariums, asylums, or any institutions like that. I did find what I had read about college kids again. It is on the National Archives site, on their "Questions Asked on the 1950 Census" page. It says this: "College students were enumerated where they lived while attending school, rather than where their parental homes were located. Members of the Armed Forces who slept off post were counted where they slept rather than where they were stationed." So, at least in some cases, the people did not get counted for their usual place of residence.

Take a look at your tree. What is that burning question you want to know about, who (target ancestor), what, where, when, and why? What is it you want to know about this target ancestor? Write it down and put it in front of you. This is your research question. Then find every record you can about that one person and their immediate family. Then put all you found in a timeline. If that research doesn't answer your question, spread out to the siblings of your target ancestor. Start with that. You'll like find more research questions from that information.

My father was born just about 10 days before the 1950 census. I found him, his parents, and his oldest sister. She is listed with her last name as grandma's maiden name. And she is listed as step-daughter. This prompted me to request my state for a copy of her birth certificate (because Kansas doesn't make them public to Ancestry). When it arrived, she has my grandfather's surname as her last name! My grandfather is listed as the father! My grandmother is the informant for the birth certificate! And my grandmother's handwriting signed the parents as "Mr & Mrs ____" (names withheld for anonymity) even though they weren't married! As can be expected, the search by name seldom works at all as the transcription software or whatever they use obviously lacks a lot. As for letting us transcribe, it is mind numbingly frustrating to type in your email address and then have to wait for as much as 30 minutes for a verification code that may or may not ever come. I live in a rural area where my family has lived for close to two centuries. I know all the family names, and in the case of the 1950 census, I actually knew a lot of these people or at least their children, etc. We could be a big help on transcribing names if the system wasn't so ridiculously slow to let us transcribe.
