I think you pull 1/4 inch nylon brade rope inward. Lots of soap. Might have put the widows after the paint. Looks nice.

I wish I used a 1/4” rope, I used a dry 3/8” and it got tight, way tight. As you see the paint, that is how it is staying. I will put some type of patina sauce on it to preserve the rust but I am not painting it. I love the old, sat in the desert for 40 years look.
