Excellent video! When you re-use a copper washer on a banjo bolt, always anneal the washer with a propane torch to cherry red and allow it to air cool. This softens the work-hardened copper and allows it to reform and make a leaf-proof seal as you snug the bolt into place.

About five or so years ago I started using synthetic fluids on the older British cars I sometimes work on, including my own '72 Triumph. Red Line manual trans fluid, silicone brake fluid, etc. Wow, what a difference! Great upgrades for these old beauties. Greetings to all hard-working men and women from NC farm country, luckily not in the path of Helene.

The SU carbies have the mixture adjustment under the dash pot. To make richer, turn anticlockwise. To make leaner, turn clockwise. Best is to establish a base setting by screwing in until they bottom out, then unscrew 2 turns. This should be very close. I grew up working on cars with carbies on them, and most of the cars I owned had carbies on them. A really useful tool for this is the Gunson’s colour tune tool. It is basically a see through spark plug you screw into a plug hole. You then start the motor and adjust the mixture until you see a pale blue flame in the plug. Use number one and number three cylinders to make the adjustments. The reason I stated two cylinders is because of the twin carbies.

i haven't changed points and condensors for a few decades.! last vehicle was a 71 volvo with a bosch distributer very similar to the vws of the era. i usually pulled the distributor off the motor and did the job on a bench. much easier and less chances of losing the little nuts and bolts. that old volvo also had twin SU carbs and yes you have to loosen the linkage to sync them. the "dashpots" to top of the carbs are there to "cushion" the air slides and need a small amount of fluid in them. volvo recommended automatic transmission fluid

screw the mixture nuts all the way up on both carbs, then back them off two full turns and start from there. it will probably be a little rich like that though and you might have to lean it out a bit by screwing them in about a flat or two.

One thing seeing this is the old sunday institution where father would do work on the car whilst the kids did their sunday thing and mother was sorting out the sunday roast, rarely cars of this era would go to a mechanics unless you were loaded and every sunday morning the clink clatter of tools opened and parts taken off, given a bath in some fairy liquid then fixed and cleaned would go back on car and sunday evening was the test drive so car was ready for the week. I remember my grandfather and father both doing this on their Triumph's, my grandmother used to kick up about the mess when grandfather was washing his SU carbs in the kitchen sink, good dollop of fairy washing up liquid and lots of bubbles, he taught me how to make from copper sheet head gaskets which was for his 2 litre Vitesse a pair of copper gaskets and a thin sheet of fibreglass all trimmed to fit perfectly and daubed with high melting point grease to give the best seal.

a lot of people call it Yellow metal and they say using GL5 can erode the yellow metal so you need to use GL4 but its hard to get GL4 nowadays so i been using GL5 in my old landrover which has yellow metal parts in the gearbox. i use a molybond stuff with the oil too it has molybdenum in it and it helps with worn bearings etc keep them lubricated well and quieten it down i have also used lucas heavy duty oil stabiliser. i run 85w140 gear oil in it for 20 years now. if you have a lot of leaks the 85w140 will stay in the box or diff longer, but id say you got rooted oil seals, just about all british cars and landrovers well anything british would leak oil most used leather seals but i use the modern neoprene seals.

Not quite the same thing but I used to have an old 1983-84 Troy-Bilt Horse garden tiller. It had bronze transmission gears in it too. If you have an O’Reilly’s parts store near you, they sell an SAE140 gear oil with the GL-4 rating that’s safe for the bronze gears.

Be a really nice old girl to putt around in once everything's working properly. As an aside, have you ever considered an exhaust hose to use on these sorts of projects where you can direct exhausts straight outside. A lot of mechanics use them, especially in the winter months when they keep their roller doors closed.

The homemade tool for SU carbs is a wire coat hanger, you cut off two sections that can stand proud of the carb body when inserted into the oil damper and you have the ends bent at an angle like an upside down L, you then tune the two carbs until both the L's are running level with each other and there you have your carbs in balance.

Shame you didn't live in Birmingham. Though the factory was at Adderley Green, from recollection they had an operation in Erdington nearby. In the late 60's I had three friends who owned frog-eyed Sprites and I had a Morris 1000 with twin SU's. For a couple of pounds they would fit new needles and jets, balance the carbs and do a full tune up.

Its rare to find a TD here in the UK as nearly save 1650 of the 22,000 made were exported to the US and were popular despite no fuel gauge, 12v electrics and older variants had no water temp gauge, the green light on the dash is your "find a petrol station soon" light which was the only fuel telltale and these cars were designed at the height of British rationing so they factored in approx 300 miles between fillups on very poor petrol known as "pool petrol" which was less petrol and more an oil being only 72 octane rating. Cars ran on this stuff lumpy and bumpy a lot, ate spark plugs for a living and backfired often causing exhausts to literally blow off under neath and folks used to pick up dropped exhaust pipes and sold them to local garages who in turn would fit them to the next passing exhaust missing car for a small fee.

Mustie, did you unscrew the black cap on the top the SU carburetors and put in damper oil? If you don't hear a sucking sound when you move them up and down, you need more oil. The oil dampers the rise and fall of the main (?) jets. It takes a light oil, but no idea of the weight.
