We do an oil change on the differential and transmission. in goes the 80W90 GL5 spec. We had lots of oil in stock and decided why not use it. the water contamination was unbelievable

I have a 1957 TO35, I have changed the hydraulic differential oil in it twice over the years, I used GL90 mineral oil, which Ferguson installed at the factory, Critical issue was to protect that yellow metal in the transmission bearings, so I understand, The 15w40 oil they use or can buy in England have some type material to protect the yellow bearings, I may use shell rotella 15w40 oil the next time I change the differential in my tractor as the tractor is no longer used plowing, mostly just bush hogging They are nice old tractors, take good care of it, My 1957 was gray and beige, your 1956 might be one of the rare early ones that was painted green and beige, maybe you can find the old paint colors under the paint, Good luck with your tractor,
@JimsNBHomestead3 жыл бұрын
Oils have come a long way and the new oils will not attack yellow metals like the old days. The key is to protect the crown and pinion thats were the EP additives come into play. 15W40 isn't near thick enough in my mind

Forgot to say I slowly added in 6 gals then let it set for a while drove it around some worked the lift then slowly added more oil, book said 8 gals, but I never remember getting more than 6 1/2 -7 gals Worked good,

I would like to inform anyone that has an old tractor such as this 35 Massey Ferguson if you have a newer tractor that has wet brakes it uses hydraulic oil for wet brakes so if you use both tractors to pull such as the same V-rake you would need to put the same hydraulic transmission oil for wet brakes in the old 35 Massey Ferguson also. Because if you don't you will be mixing the hydraulic oil of both in the V rake and it will eat up your wet brakes in your newer tractor and they are very expensive to fix (replace) . The old 35 Massey Ferguson will run ok with the new wet brake hydraulic transmission oil it is somewhat thinner than the older type fluid. I have a 539 IMT a copy of the 35 Massey Ferguson and I have a 5320 John Deere that uses hydraulic oil for wet brakes I use both tractors at different times to pull my V rake that uses hydraulics to lift and let it down. That's a good looking 35 Massey Ferguson just needs a little TLC.

Ther is 2 differnet compartments for pto and transmission i guess you just fill up the first container for transmission not for the PTO

Why can't you boil off the water, filter the old oil, and reuse it?
@JimsNBHomestead12 күн бұрын
Very good question, yes it is possible to boil the water out of the oil. My thinking was to just replace it because I had no way of knowing it's condition. It was just not worth messing with. If the oil was of known age and quality then heating the oil absolutely would have been an option.

Is there a filter in the system anywhere? I have the same machine only a 23c diesel and it badly needs this service done.
@JimsNBHomestead11 ай бұрын
There is no filter for the transmission and hydraulic system. I'm going to try and install one as a offline filter. Mostly as an experiment to see if can be done and be effective

WHERE'S THE FILTER??
@JimsNBHomestead2 ай бұрын
Inside the transmission. It's actually a screen
@reapersridge79922 жыл бұрын
To flush most of the creamy water left in there: put a few gallon of diesel fuel in ..drive around and let it wash around then drain. That should take care of the creamy..then add your hydrolic fluid.

Is there a hydraulic filter on the transmission? 1963 MF 35 Gas 6 speed
@JimsNBHomestead3 жыл бұрын
There is a suction screen in the transmission. There is no true filter. Once we relocate the tractor i will be adding rear remote on the hydraulics and at that point i can add a filter using an offline setup.
@HydesRVBoatsRexford3 жыл бұрын
So it can't easily be accessed to clean with out taking the pump out? I just bought the tractor and it has some water in it and have no service history on it.
@jimstein82493 жыл бұрын
Just a heads up, I found that after the recommend amount of oil was added to my TO20, it took about 20 minutes for the level to equalize in both sections. PS The milky appearance of the oil while looking into the fill plug as it's running might be the oil foaming, check it again after it's been off for a few minutes and if still milky, then it's water.

Why is mine a creamy white colour
@JimsNBHomestead3 жыл бұрын
OK, the creamy white color is because there is allot of water in your oil. The source of the water is usually the rubber boots on the 2 shifter handles are worn cracked or missing. When it rains the water will migrate pass the shifter rods into the transmission. Make absolutely sure your 2 rubber boots on the shifter handle are good
