My dad has a 57' Speedster, all original. Took a ride with him to a cars and coffee (the car didn't have belts), and didn't realize the speed difference that would become apparent during a stint on the highway. Cars going 80 felt like 180 sitting in the slow lane at 50mph. A neat car, but definitely a product of a simpler time.
@yankee2yankee2164 ай бұрын
You can’t go more than 50mph on the highway? I always thought they were faster than that! They are, basically, souped up VWs. They have many of the same issues, especially handling, due to the rear-mounted engine. Although quicker than VWs, they weren’t fast, by modern standards. They did make some twin-cam models that were faster, but also hard to tune and fragile, according to my limited knowledge. Always wanted one, but now that I might finally afford one, they are way outside my price range!

@@yankee2yankee216you could definitely be doing more than 50 but probably not advisable for long motorway stretches!

There's the reason why I love watching your videos: not only I find your commentary and the cars you show entertaining, but you almost always show some details/party tricks around the cars you put your hands on that I would otherwise probably never know of. That whole 356A looks super tidy, especially the engine bay and the yellow fog lights and red leather on the interior are a perfect match for that dark grey paint job.

What amazes me about these old cars is the feeling of pleasure they provide driving along a twisty road at moderate speed. Even video gives some idea of that. Then you see them at Goodwood Members meeting, drifiting through every corner. The steering wheel turning the wrong direction to catch the slide on the exit. And it's a whole different thing. The skill level of those drivers is something else. To dance on edge and not go flying off the road or worse.
@samstedman4094 ай бұрын
What I noticed about Porsches is that before you’ve ever been in one, watching them on video isn’t all that impressive, but after you’ve been in one and heard all the weird unique Porsche noises and felt the unique way they handle, watching them on video becomes a lot more special. This video certainly conveyed some of that but it’s just not the same.

Beautiful job driving this so well! It's beautifully done, harkening to the 300SL's in that color, and with those wheels. Just stunning. I've worked on, and driven a few of them, and as shown here, they are an absolute delight. Tall geared so they have long legs, super torquey with the big carbs and big valve heads and ports, and low slung in the suspension so they feel glued, but comfortable. Simplicity meets racing heritage... and swing axle.😍

Besides being a car enthusiast i'm also a guitar player and finally bought a really nice example of one of my favorite guitars of all time. Which happened to be the same year as this Porsche... a 1956 Gibson Les Paul Special. Love all the small details on this car, I always love finding that on vintage instruments. Within my memory, 356s were not expensive. When I was 16 (1966), I could have bought a running 1956 Porsche with an aluminum body, for $800! Later, I was aware I could buy a good 356 for as little as $10K-$12K! This Speedster is rarer and more desirable, but although I haven’t checked, I don’t think you can get much in the way of 356s today for less than 6 figures.. which unfortunately puts it out of my price range! Luckily I guess, there are still plenty of other good sports cars available for much less!
