That Carrera was a dream car for me. I was 15-16 when that Porsche was built. I wanted the convertible. I ended up getting a 1983 Toyota Corolla 4 Door in DARK BROWN. Thanks mom. I remember manual steering. The road feel was pretty good. But low speed steering and parking lots was HEAVY. Great workout. The tech we have now didn't exist for a freshly made 1988 Porsche. I do miss the visceral connection. I understand safety and pillars. But many cars today are isolating. Numb. I would be too emotionally attached to that Porsche to sell it.

$50-80k for a rebuild for a 3.2L motor doesn't sound right to me. I think that you're closer to the $20-30k range for a full case split rebuild if you reuse the pistons and cylinders. You could, however, easily get into that $50-80k range if you want to build a serious hot-rod (or race) motor like a twin-plug 3.5L. Also, with 82k miles, your car is a baby. I have an '88 with 220k miles on the original top end...and I have never babied my car (lots of track time, and it sees the redline on every drive). I'm looking at my first rebuild soon, even though it's far from urgently needed.
@TedwardDrives5 ай бұрын
what is going to trigger your rebuilt? Will it be miles? or sudden loss of compression? I'm not sure I know enough about that stage of the process so I'm curious what needs to happen for you to seriously consider doing it
@hueyfinesse5 ай бұрын
yeah that price is absurd. These engines arent rocket science and porsche still supplies parts
@Nightmaretyrant5 ай бұрын
@@TedwardDrives I think Matt Farah's full rebuild cost 20k but they reused any good parts as not surprisingly old Porsche stuff can hold up a long time long as you didnt grenade the motor and send a piston through the block. He had a lot of valve smoke from memory and thought " While you're in there "
@lakkadakka5 ай бұрын
@@TedwardDrives I'm not expecting anything catastrophic to happen - that's not how these 3.2 motors usually go. At 220k miles, mine is a little tired (very gradual loss of compression), consumes a little bit of oil, and smokes a little at stoplights (likely valve guides). This is what you can most likely happen to yours as it wears with age. The trigger for me rebuild will be a combination of a pending property sale (translation: cash availability) and builder/machine shop availability. I'm not in any rush, and the car is still 100% driveable - I've actually been planning/talking about doing this for the last 6 years or so. This could just be a top-end rebuild, as I don't necessarily need to split the case and do the bottom end, but I plan to keep this car indefinitely and am aiming for factory-like longevity...so I'll spend the extra money and do bearings & journals and check the balance on the crank while it's out. As it stands this build will be a bit spendy, I'm expecting to spend around $35k for what I'm trying to do. It'll basically be OEM+ w/ new pistons & cylinders and forged connecting rods to free up some rotating mass (going up to 3.4L w/ euro compression). If you want great. reliable information about these cars, the Pelican Parts forums are the best source that I've ever encountered. The folks there have done some incredible work, and are both knowledgable and helpful - they would love to have you.

Some corrections in your commentary on the 3.2: Engine Rebuilds are typically in the $25-35k range, no where near $80k. Maybe for a full restoration of the car itself. majority of these cars are worth in the $60-$80k range. The original, well sorted and documented cars can fetch $100k+ Ive got a 1987 carrera black. Engine rebuild was around $25k (11k miles since rebuild) and I refreshed the rest of the car, interior, maintenance on body and other items around $9k. Repainted by the previous owner. If you can wrench you can do for much less too. Fun cars, if i were to sell mine would probably be in the $65-70k range. It’s a well sorted driver, no garage queen either.
