On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 10-19-20.
We're looking at a 1956 Volkswagen VW Beetle Bug in Prairie Tan Paint. The car comes with the factory air cooled 4 cylinder engine.
The car's Owner is Dennis Roxworthy. Dennis’s had this car since 2014. He shares him and his Brother had a 1961 Volkswagen and they rolled it accidentally. He shared he always wanted another one and say this one had to have it. This is restored and looks “showroom” new.
ENJOY!

Absolutely perfect! Anyone with a love and interest on how cars work, John Muir's book on VW repair, "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot", explains how this car was put together. And the hand drawn illustrations of the parts break down alone, is worth the minimal price of admission. Lou and Jay Leno are the two car video guys I always look for.

Very similar to the '62 bug my family had as a second car for the children to share and pass down - also 6 volt! The small heat vents on the floor for driver and passenger, as well as the white plastic knob between the seats for heat control were the same. The one here had a spec of 32 mpg from that 36 hp engine, according to the manual you went through, which came as a surprise. Winter driving could be very challenging due to the inadequate defrosting capability, not to mention trying to stay warm in 10 degree temperatures. Have a memory of driving down the street during a snow storm with my head out the window, and trying to scrape the frost from the inside of the windshield in order to see. :) Thanks to Mr Roxberry for showing it and to you for doing the video. I remember that there was also a mail order catalog company that specialized in selling only beetle accessories throughout the 1970's, the name of which escapes me.

Great looking Beetle. I dont see many of the 1950s Beetles at the car shows around where I live they are usually 1960s or 1970s model. My grandpa rebuilt the motor in one for a couple of hippies in the 1970s and they drove it from Oklahoma to San Francisco California and they called him when they got there and told him that the beetle ran great the whole way there.

My first V-Dub Beetle was a '58 that I bought at a rummage sale for $30........What great fun! I drove it for years and did my own paint job on it........a bright yellow (I mean BRIGHT YELLOW) Herbie version. I wish that I still had that little beauty. I was working a lot of construction and thought I was "in the money" so I bought a '70 RoadRunner. How I wish I still had both of those cars!!! Both were great fun in a vastly different way! Don't SELL it!!!!......it's like selling a part of your soul. The color on this Bug is really nice.....I don't think I've ever seen this color before.....is it a factory color?

One of the first cars in my memory was a used black sunroof 1960 Volkswagen Beetle. The other car I (barely) remember was a 64 blue green Ford Country Sedan. My dad was stationed at Chanute AFB, Illinois in the 60s when I arrived in the picture, and we lived on base. My parents bought both cars at Springers Ford. I remember Mom opening the sunroof, and running many errands in that car. Later in the 60s, Dad retired from the service and we moved to Fort Worth, Texas. We began our life there as civilians, the Bug came with us, the station wagon was already replaced by another Ford, and has probably been claimed by the Midwestern road salt. Our 60 was soon replaced by a new light blue 67 Bug. I had my VW experience as a kid. You don't know what you got till it's gone!

@@robbyturbo109 I just barely remember my time there, and our assigned town home. I've lived in North Texas ever since we moved here in the late 60s, except for a brief 6 months in Maryland (another story for another time). But yeah if you can find those that will be great!

I learnt to drive in one of these in 1973. The worst spongy gear shift, bad brakes and no power at all. Probably a good thing at age 18. After I passed my license test, I settled into my brand new Datsun 180B SSS. The comparisons were astonishing. But in my old age I can look back at the Beetles with fondness. Thanks again Lou. :-)

As would be expected of Dennis, that is the nicest Beetle I can recall seeing. I agree with him that the color combo, along with the blackwall tires, is just perfect. A childhood friends mother has one and I LOVED getting a ride in it. I loved '30's-'40's cars and it seemed like a mini-version of one. What a fun little car to cruise in.

Did not see this one coming from Dennis' collection. Cute little thing. :) My Mom had a 75 when I was very young. Hers was yellow. She loved it but got too expensive for her and Dad to keep up maintenance is what I'm told. I also remember climbing up the back and walking to the front and sliding down the hood. I got in a bit of trouble for that one. LOL. Thanks for sharing this little classic.

I saw a Robin's Egg Blue '56 or '57 every day during my walk to junior high. It was a daily driver and it was already 22 years old at least. These were everywhere in my town because there was a dealership, Cutler Volkswagen in North Weymouth. Years later, when I met my wife, she told me her uncle Paul worked as a mechanic there. When they closed, he moved on to a VW repair shop. Cutler VW had a "V" shaped roof that was very iconic around here, I don't know of any other dealerships had the same design. Sadly, that building no longer exists.

I also think what you do- let these owners tell their car stories should be recognized nationally somehow. I.e. today's show. GMA. Something. Maybe it would help the morale of this country to learn about these pieces of driving history. Would probably even motivate some people to get involved in old cars. Thanks a lot lou

Hi, Lou! This was the car that started the import invasion in the Fifties. At first, the domestic carmakers, especially the Big Three, laughed at it. To them, it was much too small, it was too minimalist and spartan, and it looked too funny. And who really wanted a car with only 36 horses under the hood (er, trunk)! Besides, the Crosley, the Henry J, and other small cars had already come and gone (except for Rambler). Also, they thought, "small cars, small profits". But ultimately it forced every U.S. car brand that wasn't already doing so to offer an alternatively sized car to its clientele and answer this sudden love affair that they couldn't understand or make sense of. An economic recession in 1958 only further stressed their need to make this move. Sometimes simplicity actually does win out. My parents got a used 1960 Beetle when they were first married. This one was black. Later they got a green 1966 Beetle, which they bought new. They had good memories of those cars (my own are rather vague). Then my father got the '69 Road Runner that I told you about a while back. You know, the one he bought without telling my mother first! Thanks to you and Dennis for taking us off to see the wizard!

Growing up in the west San Fernando Valley in the '60's thru '80's, one learned that it was a haven for all things VW, in large numbers. One also learned that it spawned the term "Death Trap". With near-zero impact protection, more people were obliterated in those than any other vehicle, and I had the displeasure to have witnessed the aftermath on several occasions. I'll spare you guys the gory stories. I was deep into the SoCal Kar Kulture then, but I never ever rode anywhere in any VW product. No way, no how. Is Dennis' car a great resto? Of course. I just hope he doesn't drive it very often.

I am born in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony and such cars with metallic paint and leather seats were not made for us. They were only made for the U.S. ! These were versions strictly for export. Standard Beetles were grey without chrome at all an grey pepita rubber plastic seats ...

Ooo! Ooo! Memory Lane! A love story of sorts. It was 1971., I was 13 and walking home from the store when this blue VW bug (much like this one) driven by the most foxiest (pretty) girl, stopped and she asked me if I needed a ride home. She kinda knew me as the kid who lived two blocks away. She was 18 or 19 - so yeah, a match made in heaven, right? Not really. On the way home I tried to tell her how pretty she was - but all that came out of my face hole was, "Uhm., nice car. I like your car. It's cool". I coulda killed myself then and there with a jack-hammer. Thankfully she didn't have one of those in the car or it woulda been messy. She dropped me off at my house and drove away smiling. That was the last I saw of her. She went away to college or sumpin'. A total bummer. But really - I bragged on her car? How could she not have married me on the spot? Pffft. I'll never know. Women! Curious creatures of nature. But yeah THIS 56 Beatle is great! Massive Thumbs up! And no - I don't want no dates with anyone. :-)

Hi ImTheDaveman, Great story. Probably more the age then the car, however if she liked you're car at the time, maybe the wedding bells would have rung :-) Car's help me focus on well, cars, which is good for me, as I know I'm better with cars then women anyway :-) Lou

German cars (Old ones),always smell the same. Oily, gas fumes, rubber.....remember they had very poor HVAC, weak fan, windshield touching your forehead, very noisy, although you could race around like a maniac, and gas gauge would hardly move....fun car for its time.... stark contrast to American luxury boats of that era. As you say Lou very very simple!
