What an absolute statement: This car is absolutely gorgeous! The more modern Chrysler Sebrings & Crossfires had the ‘groove’ lines on their hoods. Always an interesting detail. Aside from obvious safety features lacking, this era of automotive design & creativity will never be repeated. That goodness you, Lou, and the owners of these type cars, are willing to share their cars with us. Much appreciated!! Thanks Lou for a great Saturday morning treat!

Oh, some cars were not too safe from that era, but these cars were of a decidedly stout design & unitized construction..an impact anywhere was transferred to most all parts of the body. Very strong indeed. "Extra care in engineering", was a Chrysler motto and they truly meant it..not just for the car, but the passengers, as well.

December 8, 1961, my future father-in-law drove me and his daughter to my first college ball at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen, Holland, in his brand new Chrysler 300 G; exactly the same one as here in the video. One of my fondest memories and I really enjoyed seeing the car again. Many thanks.

Frits, If your father-in-law's 300-G was shipped direct to Holland, its speedometer would likely have been calibrated in km/hr - namely 250 kmh in place of the US-spec 150 mph speedometer.

@@noelhastalis6785 Indeed it had the speedometer in km’s up to 250. Was very impressive for that time. I figure that you are a real petrolhead, to attend to such details. Me too actually.

more than 'happy' lights, I'd call them deranged! and I affectionately say that as the owner of a '59 Lincoln. The F and the G crossram years are the best years of the letter cars IMHO...I used to like the F more cause of its more cohesive styling, but now I prefer the G because it is just so wild. Just a lot going on in these cars...made for adults...the owner/driver couple, and their double date, for a night on the town. I drove a '60 Windsor convertible down the Pacific coast many years ago, and well recall that incredible dashboard...one of the most unique and interesting ever made. Congrats to the new owner

Not terrible to check or change. These have inner fender cutouts held on by 8 bolts on each side. Jack up the car, or put it on a hoist, unbolt the cutouts, and the plugs are easily visible. Only the #7 plug is a little tight by the steering column.

Space age inspired looks with that spectacular astrodome dash and with factory air included with those porthole vents completes the dash presentation with all those chrome buttons. Then you lift the hood...and WOW...those cross rams with their presence look the real deal. Claude's 300G along with Jay Leno's are the two outstanding Exner designed cars of the American mid century motoring era.

If you ever drive a 300 of this era up to 1970 or so, you will be shocked. They handle like nimble trucks or large SUV's of today. Chrysler innovated torsion bar suspension, way back in the early 50's. My 64 and 66 handled amazingly well and didn't have that floating feel of a Cadillac, Buick, or Lincoln. They were so far ahead of their time it's just sad what happened in the late 60's and early 70's as all US manufacturers failed to adapt to competition.

Claude and Lou - Great 300-G video today! Nice that Claude's G has the upgraded 7-button Golden Tone radio, not found on many of these cars. It's also interesting to see that the deck lid's underside bracing still has the same holes and stamping to mount the hubcap as did the 1960 deck lids. All the 1960 Chryslers had 14" wheels, so the 300-F's Flight-Sweep ("toilet seat") deck lid could accommodate the F hubcaps, along with those of the other models. For '61, the 300-G wheels grew to 15", so their hubcaps couldn't fit in the stamped '60-style deck lid. All other '61 Chryslers still had 14" wheels, so the toilet seat trunk was an available option, in place of the ribbed deck lid seen on Claude's wonderful 300-G.

Those Chrysler boys knew how to build them back then! Just look at the curved indent that runs up and down the body of the car! For a car that was over 2 tons, they were one of the fastest production cars of the day, esp. with that optional cross-air induction engine. Look at old NASCAR video’s and you’ll see many of these on the track. You the best on You Tube Lou! Thx again!

Hi, Lou! Well, this must have been an especially exciting moment for Claude, not only to have his freshly purchased 300G delivered, but also to have it done on camera with a famous classic car show host and take his first drive with him! As for Claude preferring the '61 with the tailfins to the '62 without them, to each his own, but most people by then thought the tailfin craze was getting out of control, so there was no way around it. Chrysler HAD to get rid of them! (Even more so Imperial!) Plymouth had already done just that in '61. Riding in the back bucket seat of this car would have been a rare experience. Probably the closest some people have come to that would be riding in the back of a second generation Camaro or Firebird, only this one has more room! Many thanks to you and Claude for inviting us along on this maiden voyage! P.S. I noticed he was wearing a White Sox cap, but I thought most WS fans were South Siders! Just saying!

Thank you for another excellent classic car review, and the wonderful memories. My uncle bought a 300G new in 1961 also in white. I was a young child then, but I remember sitting in the back seat while he hit the accelerator going up the Highland Park hill in Brooklyn. The car took off like a rocket! In '64 he traded it for the new redesigned Thunderbird, which was also a very futuristic car for the time. But there were many times I'd hear him say he wished he never traded in that Chrysler.

Claude has a outstanding 300 there! I agree love those wings and the ribs on the deck lid. I was always amazed at the design of those Chryslers in the late 50's and early 60's. I love this car in the white it is also gorgeous in that red color too. I think the white is a very cool color and a very distinguished color. Those options on this unit were so unique to this car. That engine Chrysler used back then amazed me on how they operate an perform. Just a outstanding unit Lou I enjoyed the maiden voyage of this awesome 300! Thanks for sharing Claude and Lou!

If I were him, that smile would stay with me for a decade or more. Every option in the book, other than short reach induction, on that car. I do love this year because of all the engine and transmission options. Chrysler was so far ahead of Ford and GM with every car in their lineup. Never noticed the air cars have double belts: Chrysler engineered fail safe protection, as belts always snapped, back in the day. Fun fact, this car cost the same as the average salary back in 61, of $5,600 without air and that option added another $550. In this condition, these sell today for a bit more than average salary of 2019 of $49K, with this car in the range of $85-120K. It's rare to see a car's value appreciate like that. Most of the mid 60's muscle cars do but for me, this is the car of record..... The entire Chrysler line up from 58-64 are a period of chaos in design corporations will never allow to happen again. Thanks Lou. Let us know if his smile ever leaves his face.

The optional shortram 400 hp 413s were not available to the average buyer. 9 300-Fs were built with the shortrams, and we think even fewer 300-Gs were built with these. The 1960 4-speed Fs and 1961 3-speed Gs were sent to another shop to have their stick shift linkages and shortrams installed. These were such extremely limited offerings, that Chrysler didn't assign an option number to them, and there's no identification on the build broadcast sheet, either. Authenticating these cars is best done by comparing their factory build date to their ship date, which was typically a couple weeks or more. By comparison, the 'scheduled production' to 'ship' date difference on my 300-F was 8 days.

@@noelhastalis6785 Ahh, "The rest of the story!" Thanks. I fig'd the number was low. ..so was the 400 hp car as quick as the quickest letter car..as in the 300M of circa 2000? Ik, it's surprising!

@@gzuzsavz Though I've seen 3 of the 4 existing 400 hp shortram 300-Fs in person, I've never driven or ridden in one. Peak torque kicked in at 3600 rpm, vs at 2800 rpm for the 375 hp longram cars, and I've read/heard that they're not as quick off the line. They were really built to compete in the annual Daytona Speed Weeks flying mile competition. It's interesting that the 3-speed stick 400 hp 300-G cars ran slightly quicker at Daytona January 1961, but a piece of trim flew off 3 of the 4 400 hp 300-Gs, and so were disqualified. The rules stated that the complete car had to run the flying mile in both directions, and so failed when they lost a trim piece. Crazy! 1961 was the final year the Daytona Speed Weeks event was held.

I with they built cars today with all the modern hi tech drivetrain, suspension, materials, safety developments but with this kind of styling. If they gave some of the new electric generation cars this kind of styling at a comparable price to modern jellybeans, the public might be more enthusiastic to make the switch. I always hear "Telstar" by the Tornado's playing in my head when I see this car.
