I used to own a 1967 Triumph T100ss twin carb conversion, I loved that bike. I've viewed a few of Andy's very special bikes including the 600cc Gold star, very nice.

With every blip of the throttle watching a spray of 98 octane fuel disappearing down its gullet, I thought "one shilling...two shillings......." I'd have thought that it would look a lot better with some judicious panel beating, cutting and argon arc welding of the Lyta tank upgraded to carry the 4" Gold Star tank badges, which is what I'd be doing with it "if Lotto comes up............." Amal's GP series were racing carburettors and Racers don't need a tick over when blasting down the straight at 115 mph. At 16 years old I went to Thruxton and saw the 500 race where Gold Stars, G50's and Manx Nortons where on the grid, blipping throttles before a push (uphill) start. Engines cut, in gear, pull bike back to bring it up to the back end of the compression stroke and watch for the Marshall's flag. When the flag dropped, furious push, riders leapt onto the saddles and dropped the clutches, machines barked into life except the stragglers, fistful of throttle, slipping clutches then leg over and head for the first corner, a right hander. Some 25 odd riders and the bass noise thumped against my chest. Telling Dad about it later he said "you just witnessed the release of some 1,000 BHP Son"

In the mid 1960's I recall Amal's carburettors were the 276 standard series with float chamber off to one side, then the monobloc 376 series with integral float chamber, the TT competition series and finally the GP (Grand Prix) racing series, which had no provision for tick over, needle mounted to one side and angled stub tube into the inlet. Remotely mounted float chamber, first of all round type then later "matchbox" type and on the Gold Star, adjustable for height. 1 3/8" on the 1956 DB34 Clubman's Gold Star then 1 1/2" on the 1957 (or so) DBD34 Clubman's Gold Star. The 1 1/2" GP did have a side choke slide, but that never seemed to work for me.
