Yeah buddy congratulations you got it I have no idea why people do that it’s my biggest pet peeve I absolutely hate it when people do that to me in my truck and then Have to drive slower because they won’t go over 10 miles an hour down the road The other one that really grinds my gears of people that sit in the passing lane and will not pass the car in front of them to the point where you can pass on the left which really makes them mad.. i’m thinking about making stickers that say I did what you couldn’t do and I passed the car in front of you.. =)

Thank you for this video. The Dual-Ghia is near and dear to me. Back in the late 1950s my father bought a brand-new 1957 Dual-Ghia with the hemi-head V8. At the time it was a toss-up between the Dual-Ghia or a Mercedes 300SL gull-wing. Both were about the same price. The latter would be worth more today, but at the time he went with the Dual-Ghia. Partly it was the style, partly the more functional 2+2 seating, but partly he was a fan of American powerplants wrapped in European styling (he liked Shelbys and Allards for that reason. Later he would own two Bitter SC coupes, GM engines with German styling). Living in NYC at time time meant parking was always a problem, so having two cars (one for show and one for go) was out of the question. As a result, the Dual-Ghia was our only "daily driver". I remember taking trips to grandma's house (so yes, the back seat was usable... at least for children). My father ended up owning three altogether. He realized that parts, especially body parts and trim, would be very hard to come by. So when he came across a couple of run-down examples on a used-car lot he bought them just for the parts. They were stored away in rented garages while we continued to use the "blue" car for daily duties. Some interesting tidbits - the power windows were added sometime after production started, which is why the switches are on their own panel and not more integrated into the dashboard or door panel. The reason was that the manual windows required 11-1/2 turns to roll the window down, far too much labor for such a luxurious car. So power windows were installed instead. If you look at the door panel you'll see big chrome buttons that cover up where the window crank was originally installed. As I recall, the basic frame was from a Dodge D-500 car that was shipped to Italy. There, Ghia would cut out about 6" of the frame to shorten the wheelbase for a more sporty look and performance. The bodies were hand-made, not stamped. Part of the reason Chrysler didn't make the cars themselves was because the compound curves of the concept-car body didn't lend themselves to stamped-steel production. Getting stamping dies to fit and work wouldn't really fit and work. As for performance - for a hemi-head V8, the horsepower was fairly low. My father consulted a hot-rod specialist about mods. The specialist pointed to the small, stock, cast-iron exhaust manifolds as the biggest culprit. As the guy put it, the "engine was constipated". While physically a big car today, at the time this was a low-slung, sporty car. My mother recalls driving around and looking UP at all of the other big cars on the road around her. Speaking of which - that July 1963 issue of Road&Track you show with the Dual-Ghia on the cover? That is our car, with my mother driving it. My father wrote the article for that issue. The photo was taken in Forest Hills, NY where we lived at the time. The view was from the LIRR station bridge overlooking Continental Avenue. That brick-paved street is still the same today. As a result of his passion and ownership, my father met with Gene Casaroll and became something of a subject-matter expert on the vehicle. Among other things, he was one of the editors of the classic-car price guides, providing input on Dual-Ghias (and Bitters). He would joke that he was at cross-purposes when setting a value. Naturally, he wanted a high price to make his cars worth more. But, knowing that our (Connecticut) town used that guide to set property-tax values, he wanted a low price to keep his taxes down. :) Alas, the cars are no longer in the family. But the memories remain. PS - I know our "blue" car received the restoration it deserved. And I believe at least one of the two parts cars did as well (one was close to drivable, but the other had rusted in two).
@What.its.like.Ай бұрын
Wow thank you so much for taking the time to share all of that insight and those memories To me the dual ghia was the best it's better than the continental mark II and the Cadillac Eldorado brougham and was the cheapest of the three and now it's work more than both of those cars

"Just wow..." Well said my friend. Aside from the original Studebaker Starlight coupe/ Hawk, nothing on the road at that time had such a presence. I'm a little suprised, considering the exclusivity, that the poly V8 was even offered. The cowl/ windshield look to be straight off a regular Dodge convertible but that is where the similarities end. It is sad that most of today's offerings are so lacking in imagination & Style. Thanks for another gem.( And especially the drive) Keep 'em coming bro...👍🏁

315 isn’t a big block.. electric cars being green is all just smoke and mirrors and is a total lie.. going to do an episode on it one day because the pollution caused by mining cobalt and lithium ion as well as producing the batteries themselves is probably way more detrimental to the environment than gasoline cars. The bigger thing that nobody talks about is they have no way of getting rid of the lithium ion batteries once they are spent. It’s like cryptocurrency speculation.. two really stupid things main stream, with one major thing in common speculation. Don’t get me wrong I love electric cars but I think it should be your choice and what you drive the government should not have any role in it whatsoever if you want to drive a gasoline car they should not make it where you have to buy an electric car that’s what’s happening oil prices have gone up gasoline prices have gone up there’s no shortage they’re just trying to push everybody into a hole.. and do you think that they’re going to lose the money per gallon that they charge in taxes they’re gonna make everybody’s electric bill go up more people use electric than people that drive so government will get a bigger kick back than gasoline.. it’s always about money. It’s not about the environment that is the lie that they push if it was about the environment they would make hydrogen cars just saying..

@@What.its.like. If you look up John Cadogan’s channel, he has videos on lithium battery thermal runaway. Two of the most important are: A video on the recent car battery fire, 50 metres from the control tower of Sydney’s main airport AND the video he produced after a Finnish ferry company executive contacted him. The Finn is developing a solution, based on his initial maritime experience in fishing boats, for rapidly stopping thermal runaway. John started out as an apprentice in a railway workshop, earned a degree in civil engineering and later worked as a motoring journalist. He runs a company getting good deals on new cars in Australia and also has a radio show. The two videos that I have mentioned are excellent primers on large lithium battery fire hazards.

I remember seeing an old Motor Trend, or maybe a Car Life from the early 60's when it still carried Classifieds. There was one of those Dual Ghias I from the 50's for sale for about 1200.00. These were beautiful cars, especially in the era it was built, but it was also the incredible aura that surrounded it that made it fascinating. Similar to a Duesenberg car, a car of the rich and flashy, as opposed to Packard, a car of the rich, discriminating, and quiet dignity. I remember seeing an old film showing one on the set of "Dead Ringer" 1964. It showed Peter Lawford arriving still driving his personal copy, and fretting he might have a tiny scratch on the fender. You wouldn't see that car everyday, not even in flashy Hollywood. Howard Hughes was ahead of his time, in those days he drove, or was driven in a nondescript Chevrolet with black walls. He wisely didn't advertise his wealth, more common today among the wise. I'll take any of the cars offered, guaranteed money in the bank. Miss the Imperial Palace, my once favorite in Las Vegas. Oh, that Duesenberg room!

Awesome story these cars were faster than I think the specs that lead on to be and I wondered if you put it in low how far you could drive in low before you had to shift it to drive because it’s only up to speed so you might be able to go 60 miles an hour in first year I had a 67 mustang with an FMX transmission it was a three speed and you could go to 60 in first gear but I mean you had to shift it right at 60 it was only good for 110 really long first gear the other two gears were pretty short. But man if you drove it like that it turned into a whole different car it was pretty slow if you put it in drive and just went for it but if you shifted it manually the fastest time I got was 0 to 60 in 5 1/2 seconds.. that was also another car you couldn’t get into it right off the rip you had a kind of like gradually go into it otherwise the rear end would break loose and you wouldn’t be able to go fast quick you would just be burning out.. Man I miss that car.. but it’s one of those things if I had the money to buy another one I don’t think that I would I would buy something else it’s not about speed for me it’s about driving experience and right now if I had $5000 I’d buy Nash Metropolitan.. lol

Love looking at pre 60's vehicles, especially niche cars like the Dual-Ghia. I realize that tail fins were all the rage in the mid 50's, but I think the execution of these by Ghia detract from the overall form of the body lines. The fins themselves are too flat and squared off; they resemble a couple strips of wood tacked on top of the rear fenders. I think if they had reshaped these as exaggerated creases that mimic the trunk lid center, it might have been a more cohesive look. Just my opinion...

This was a bucket list thing for me I can’t think Hyman LTD enough =) i’m hoping to get out there next year and cover some cars they have all the stuff that I’m into, I would be lying if I told you that I was not looking through their inventory on A now and then basis.. wondering when I could get out there Great choices That is honestly my biggest pet peeve that and people that like to sit in the passing lane

It's just too bad the "Ghia" name was later connected with some of the Mustangs. These were just stunning and unique vehicles. I like the 57's and 64's.
@What.its.like. Жыл бұрын
House of Ghia made some pretty cool cars but I’m with you mustang II isn’t one of them. I want to find a 64 Hyman had one.. I want to see about going out there sometime next year I’ve never been to St. Louis Missouri I would love to go to Volo too

It’s such an epic car this was the highlight of my year or one of them definitely going to do a reflection episode and cover some of the stuff that happened behind the scenes this year it’s been an incredible year honestly can’t wait to see where we’re at next year at the channel has come along way in two years =) Mid50s Chrysler to me is the pinnacle of Chrysler yes they made some more performance options in the 70s but it doesn’t really get much better..

Yeah the software’s been doing that it’s really pissing me off.. I updated my iPad for the very first time and now I’ve haven’t, nothing but issues with it I wish I never updated it. I’ve down loaded and re-download the software numerous times I’m doing the last update to make my iPad totally up-to-date hopefully that fixes things because I’ve had to change how I record things because it’s generally way worse than that is I’ve been recording it in three different segments now and it still gets jumbled up.. but that’s neither here nor there and figure it out and fix it lol Great choices

@@What.its.like. Hey man went thru the same thing with my Firefox browser last week, couldn't watch any videos, every time I open one video will play and after a few minutes the page freezes up the whole computer, after a couple of reboots I had to delete the browser and install one of the old versions I've saved and set the reinstalled browser to never update, since it is only for e-mails and videos, not financial transactions. Just now catching up on watching your videos, and others I like. Guess it's the tech companies October surprise. hope you get everything sorted out.

10:16 "... when backed by a two-speed PowerGlide transmission ..." Does that imply a Chrysler engine and a General Motors transmission?

Powerflyte =) I saw conflicting information where the torque flight was also available but I never could find a picture with the gear selector because the gear selector would be different so I didn’t include that one there was a ton of conflicting information on this car One source said that that used the 361 engine

So Chrysler named a concept car the firebomb? Did they not learn anything from Dresden and Tokyo?
@What.its.like. Жыл бұрын
Not sure it was a really hard name it doesn’t roll off your tongue like fire dome does.. I really struggled with this one I wish you guys could’ve saw how many takes I did it sounds like one cohesive piece but I can assure you that there’s so many cuts in that episode Because I just couldn’t say the lines were like tongue twisters

PowerFlite trans, a Chrysler transmission, not Powerglide. Powerglide is a Chevrolet trans, and Chrysler never ever ever used GM transmissions. Ever. Also, we never measured torque in NM. Ever.
@What.its.like. Жыл бұрын
I know someone wanted me to start using NM never said the transmission was power glide someone in the comments did there was so much conflicting information on what transmissions were used power flite definitely, that’s what they used but there was also mention of torque flite but I couldn’t back that up there was also information saying the 361 V-8 was used but I could never find any pictures of that engine in the engine bay. I went back and listen to it again the first one I said power flight the second one I miss spoke and said powerglide but it should be power flight thank you for that correction.. =)

I live in a town with natives who love to break traffic laws, and I have noticed that when people are doing something they know is asinine, they often slow down to give the people they are butting in front of a chance to miss them.
@What.its.like. Жыл бұрын
That’s crazy.. The other one that really grinds my gears as when people sit in the passing lane but they won’t pass the vehicle in front of them when I was in Michigan and there was a line of cars behind this one guy I got in the left lane and passed everybody and then he pulled up next to me and wanted to sideswipe me because I actually passed the car in front of me.. I don’t know people are weird.. I don’t like being a road clot lol
