This is a 1957 Westinghouse front load "Spacemate" washing machine which had been removed from a 1957 mobile home. It was not functional until the day this video was shot.

Hi, just to give you some more information this machine was sold in Italy sporting the FIAT (Car Factory) brand. It was made in USA and assembled in Italy whare most of all a current adaptor (autotransformer) was added to use the italian current that at the time could vary from 160 to 280 volt 42 or 50 HZ depending on the electrycity provider. I have one of this FIAT Westinghouse machine the most interesting thing is the double belt drive system to switch from wash to spind dry.

For a '57 washer, it has an amazingly simple control panel. But then, all of the Westinghouses did.

I remember a lot of apartments had these Westinghouse laundry machines. How do you select the wash water temperature on this one? Did they have low suds detergent available back in the day for these front load machines? Great video and restoration. シ

Aww the times when washers washed with a tub of water. Now all you get is a teaspoon of water for washing and rinsing with a wimpy ass spray rinse.

Antonio Carter Front loaders dont need a lot water for washing. Rinse should be done with water to the door at the least
@davenwin19734 жыл бұрын
@@drsenseihugo if you read Antonio Carter's comment again, he's referring to when washers used enough water to wash clothes. I had as Frigidaire front loader I bought in 1999, and it used enough water to get the clothes clean. I bought an LG In 2012, and it barely filled with water. I had to adjust the water pressure switch, just so it used enough water. Since my LG washer is an entry level model, the tub uses a rising fill, instead of spraying the water onto the clothes, into the tub. So by the original factory settings, clothes in the middle of the tub never got wet, and the outer part got wet, but never fully washed and rinsed.

I bet it cleans better than today's front loaders.

That's interesting how there are 2 constant speed belts one for tumble and one for spin. I'm assuming there's like a clutch or something to control which one is drinking.

great washer built in times when materials were built in high quality to stand the test of time. I highly doubt modern washers will work in 50 years from now

I think by this time both All and Dash, low sudsing detergents, were available. AD may have still been on the market as well.

Was this Machine made in the UK? It is the same as the English Electric Liberator 4021, except that the 4021 had a soap port in the door glass and better styling... it spins at 450 RMP. I have a machine and a service manual.. it was made from the late 50s to the mid 60s

I noticed this model tumbles counter clockwise. I had a Westinghouse Laundromat with the same drive system but it tumbled clockwise. It was a full size machine and from 1966. I liked the way you wrote Wes ting house Laundromat. I thought i was the only one that did that. LOL. LONG LIVE THE WESTINGHOUSE SPACE SAVER LAUNDROMAT!!!!

Wonderful machine! I think it's spinning at 500 RPM. I had an old machine that spinned at 400RPM, this one is a littlebit faster...

The final spin was 550 RPM

how do u add bleach or softener to water? there is no dispenser door there ?
@soap1919jt7 жыл бұрын
My question, too. By today's standards, a good work-around would be non-chlorine bleach, detergent with softener, or dryer sheets.

What a beautiful classic piece of machinery (back when nano-circuit boards weren't in the limelight)... still operates awesomely... I also like how things where mechanical rather than with modern direct drives and quiet circuit boards... :) btw, how do you add detergent here - is it directly into the drum or...? thanx ;)

Great video... Wow what a wonderful vintage front load washer... Back in the day these front loads used plenty of water, and got your clothes CLEAN... Not like the H E Crap today that barley dampens your clothes.. There's a big difference cause the H E front loads just don't use enough water.. Love vitage washers... they were the best. BUILT solid and lasted a long time.. Great fun to watch too..

Only issue I had with these White Westinghouse front loaders, is that they had no dispensers, which made it difficult, if not impossible to use liquid bleach or liquid fabric softener.

Oh boo hoo. Stop the washer, open the door, dump it in the drum, close the door and start it again.
@amyhuber78764 жыл бұрын
@@revvinkev That's what my grandma did. I can remember going to her house on laundry day, and the smell of bleach. I honestly kind of like the smell, it brings back fond memories.

hi, very nice have u seen the Westinghouse made in Italia by Fiat? does it have a pre-wash ? do u put the soap directly in the drum? What was wrong with this machine?
@atomsmash1004 жыл бұрын
As Betty Furness always said, "You can be sure, if it's Westinghouse."
@mthivier11 жыл бұрын
these must have been popular in mobile homes at the time. My grandmother lived in a mobile home from the late '50s, and she had the same machine (hers was turquoise blue). It was in the kitchen with a countertop on top of it. Must have been one of the first "stackables".
