I worked at a body & paint shop one late 1960s summer. This car and the 1958 Buick were the ultimate nightmares: Masking those miles of rear quarter panel chrome trim took darn near forever.

It's really a work of art. Hard to believe that at one time the roads were full of cars like this.

What a stunning automobile! Just think back when these cars were made, most everyone could get something like that. Starting with the 58 Chevrolet Impala, Pontiac Bonneville, Oldsmobile 88, Buick special. These were all works of art. Riding in one of those was like riding in your living room. these were the cars that were on the road back then .❤

The ‘58 Olds was my dad’s favourite car. The filler cap for the gas was hidden under one of the fins, and the radio was removable. The dashboard lit up at night and the car was smooth as silk over bumpy roads.

Oldsmobile Supper 88 was always the understated Cadillac that those who didn't like the glitz and attention but love comfort and performance would go for . I grew up in a home were my father always drove them, by the1970's he had the Toronado with it was much nicer than the Eldorado or Lincoln.
@1965Weasel
@1965Weasel 5 жыл бұрын
TWTR4EVER Yes sir and the Toronado was a front wheel car as well. My dad drove Olds as I was born and growing up. Then he went to the Buick Electra 88 then over to the Cadillac in 1977. Man was that such a better time growing up.

I remember the Olds commercial on our black & white TV There’s a rocket for every pocket! My brother had a tan & white 56 coupe. You wouldn’t have to worry about what lane # you parked in at the shopping center with that color and all that chrome. It would stand out among hundreds parked in the lot.

Spectacular! You did an awesome job on this beauty! I remember a teacher at my elementary school had an Olds Super 88, and the coolest thing was where the gas filler was hidden. I would never have guessed the location ...just in front of the driver's side upper taillight! Very clever 👍

New cars are boring and sad too: only clumsy and inelegant dark SUVs. Unfortunately there are no changements in sight, because men love the "macho" truck styled vehicles, and sadly also a lot of women, only for boasting, or "feeling safe". What a stupid epoch!

Grew up in one of those -- a 1958 Holiday 88 -- same color as shown but with white roof. Family car in late 60s early 70s -- its engine "Lifters" had gone out on it and my dad didn't have the money to repair so it didn't go up steep hills as well as it could. It started to rust out badly in the underbody -- by 1974 you could put your foot thru the floor on the driver's side. My dad sold it to a young guy in 1974, who was going to hot rod it.

Seating is no different than my Living Room Couch. No air bags, no belts, no worry about mileage, no disc brakes, no center stop light, no squashed rear window that looks like the car was stepped on. When you drove this car home from the dealer, you stopped, bought and drank while steering, a few 'Six Packs', lit up an Unfiltered Cigarette, and never felt the bumps in the road.
