Im thinking taking a mid grade guitar and throwing this $1,000 Gibson pickup into it.. Doesn't make sense. BUT If I already had a vintage Gibson and lets say the pickup went bad. Then this pickup is a deal. You can throw this thing in there to replace the bad pickup without having to search for the ACTUAL vintage part (what Sean said it's like $10,000)... I guess in that case it's a good option. SOOOOO.... If you consider it as a replacement part for the vintage used gibson market... It makes more sense as a product. @SlimeyGuitarStrings6 күн бұрын
I think they're a scam. I get that a vintage PAF can cost $10,000 which means that $1,000 for an "authentic clone" is an okay price. My issue is that Gibson is trying to build a whole brand around the history of their instruments and then gatekeeping them behind a price most people can't afford. I like Burstbuckers, but if we take Gibson at their word that these are better, realistically, they could afford to put a nicer pickup in a Gibson USA standard guitar. They just won't for the sole purpose of making people want to spend money. You cannot convince me that the cost of production is markedly different between a burst bucker and one of those expensive PAFs if they were being made at scale. The DiMarzio 35th Anniversary, Seymour Duncan Antiquity/Pearly Gates, BareKnuckles Mules, and Rewind TAF are all replica pickups which sound good and cost a heck of a lot less. To me, it looks like Gibson is offering their customers a worse value than they could otherwise offer because I think most other brands would put a better pickup in their guitar if it cost about the same price. A second issue is that we've seen with other reissues Gibson always comes out with there being some new thing that's closer to the original or that they discovered about the original. I just don't buy that this is it. Give it a few years and they'll come out with a new more "authentic" pickup. So I reiterate that it's a scam and even a bit anti-consumer.

Of course this is outrageously expensive to the average person, and I would not pay that much for them. However, this is not meant for the actual normal guitar player. It is meant for the high-end collector who will probably never even use them. Don't get overwrought about it, lots of consumer products sell for many _times_ what the base marginal cost of manufacture is. But you need to factor in overheads - depreciation of the machines and buildings, payroll costs, including medical insurance (I heard some years ago that it costs General Motors less to manufacture a car rolling off the production line, than they pay for medical insurance for the employees who make manufacturing the car possible!). I doubt there is much you buy, food, clothing, or anythings else that doesn't as a base level, sell to you for _at very least_ three times the basic cost of manufacture. Some years ago I worked for a biscuit (cookie) manufacturer, and a popular line of biscuits retailed for five times the marginal cost.

But what's next, that'll be even "better, more real" than these? DiMarzio came out with their 36th Anniversary PAFs not too long ago, I think it's something they do every year. And it's kind of an odd number, (Not the 30th, or 35th) but they happened to hit it out of the park. Everyone saying it's the best thing since 1959, yadda yadda. I think they sold the pair for about $300 new, and costs about the same now. So unless I win a lottery, I'll never buy $1,000 pickups. I'll find something used, for much less. Dunno, those Fralin pure PAFs are quite dandy! I'm sure this will be some bragging point for someone, not I. I wouldn't mind hearing a set, in real life, but seriously doubt I'd ever buy a pair; unless cherubs fly out of my bum when I hear them.

I’m gonna be honest, I’m mad only because I bought series 1 recently and series 2 just dropped, but if they’re anything like series 1 mannnnn will it wake your guitar up. I put the series 1 in a sg standard and it’s an astronomical fucking differnce. So now to get series 2 to have on standby or something lol.

I just can’t imagine there being double the closeness to an actual PAF to a custom bucker where I’m sure they used actual examples of to get it good enough to put in a $5k+ guitar. So it’s like either the custom bucker is a lie or these are overly massaged custom buckers. The package is arguably worth $1000. I don’t think the pickups are worth $1000. I also see the cool factor in owning these and don’t think someone shouldn’t buy them.

How many sets of these will be sold on eBay and reverb as original pafs for 10,000 dollars?
@bertgetner93976 күн бұрын
The sad part is once they are sold out the price to have them goes through the roof. And if they are making 1000 pieces then it shouldnt be a problem to make another 1000 pieces. The price is too high for the average guy but there are business people and wealthy individuals that will scoff them up for all the wrong reasons. "All that and a bag of chips"

The sound comes from the pickup...(Come at me bro) take into consideration the $2800-$50,000 pick tag of a Les Paul One could ARGUE, that these are 80% of the sound (All things being equal) Tone wood? Jim Lill has debunked that (Basically, go watch some of his videos) I hate the price. YET. These could be priced higher and people would still buy them. \m/

I'm curious as to what the covers look like and what/how they're made because Gibson has lost the ability to produce pickups the way they used to.

Epitome of what’s with Gibson. Lawyers and dentists … which working pros (not signed with Gib) would opt for these over OX4, Bare Knuckle, Lollar, CNovak, Arcane, SD, Fralin? Why is RD carrying the water for ridiculous price when it’s their own initial design?
@chadb59596 күн бұрын
I want them. Does CG sell them or must I go thru Gibson or a Gibson dealer? Let's experiment, CG. I'll buy the pickups. I have a few Murphy Labs: a 61 SG, 61 335 and a 60 Les Paul. Chose a guitar, play it in the shop, install the pickups and then see if we can hear the difference.

WTF…. I wouldn’t listen to much of what Mark has to say. He was plucked for knowledge, but completely used for propaganda. Don’t blame Gibson but mark has to live with what bs he’s shoveling; as we all do.

Sean can sell that silver turquoise bracelet and have his $1000 for those pickups. Follow me for more financial advice.

umm, would I install a set in my Nashville ES-335 '59 reissue? Hard to say. I like my 57 Classics that I currently have so it's a tough call. The price doesn't scare me considering what they are. I mean look what a ES-335 reissue sells for. *if* it was easier to swap pickups then that could push me towards the swap. IMHO

What?! No Pink Blanket?! Sacrilege. I don't see those machine marks on the bended brackets either! Pffftt! I do like the flat-blade screws on the P-Ring tho. 🤔 I own 1 paf and it doesn't have those marks either. The shielding on mine looks like it's from WWII, too bad some D-Head chopped the wire like 4 inches long while he was destroying history AND he split up the pair not knowing they are worth much more AS a pair. It's the bridge pup in my beautifully made 335 with dot inlays. Now if only I could play as well as Jonathan. Oh well! Ya can't have Everything. Happy Holidays Every bod-dee!

I think we live in a country where there’s a part of the population that has an insane amount of money and spending $1000 on a set of pickups is not a big deal at all. Gibson would not be good at business if they didn’t cater to that community. 1000 run is so they don’t kill the goose

Preface by saying I have no doubt these are excellent pickups. I think that if you can't find a set of pickups that sound fantastic for a couple of hundred dollars, you aren't trying. There is no magic pixie dust sprinkled on PAF pickups. They are just wires, magnets, bobbins, and polepieces like every other pickup on the market. If someone wants to pay 1k for a set of these, that's their choice to make. The guitar isn't going to sound better for it. It's just about bragging rights and a feeling of unearned superiority. To say "yes, but the original PAF goes for 10k so this is 1/10th the price" is a fallacy. Not only are these NOT original PAF'S by any stretch of the imagination, paying 10k for an original is pretty ridiculous as well. These are toys for the very wealthy in a society that is crumbling because of the divide between wealth and poverty.

I have no issue with someone making a non-essential product and pricing it however they want. That said, I’d never be a buyer. It’s never going to be a more than a reproduction. And as a collector’s piece, it’s devalued as soon as you install them in a guitar. I’m not buyer but someone is.
