This is the first car that I learned to drive. My parents owned one in black. And it also came in pastel blue. Daddy drove one home for mom to lok at and my aunt Rosie Tabor Howard had a dress on with matching earrings that matched the car. She lived just up the road from our home here in Mocksville, NC. Daddy chose the black one and it ran until 1972. He was a mechanical engineering major in college and knew how to fix many types of cars.

In Canada, Ford Canada, had a division called Meteor, a cross between a Ford and a Mercury.

I wonder how well the paint held up after Nan Adams crashed her beautiful '59 Montclair four door hardtop during her cross country trip?

I literally just watched that and had to look up the car, it's beautiful - and that is a GREAT episode!!

Was that when her windshield was in or was out of the car? In lots of shots, they simply had removed it to avoid glare, distortion, and reflection. (Fine with me, as Nan was a beaut!)

It’s too bad that they couldn’t have prevented them from rusting out as prematurely as they did. The announcer talked about it looking good in 1969. Here in Wisconsin, 1959 Mercury’s were scarce as hens teeth in 1969. So was just about every other 1959 car. They were biodegradable!

Did you grow up in Wisconsin at that time?

@@SpockvsMcCoy Yes, I’ve lived in Wisconsin most of my 66 years. Fortunately technology has improved greatly as far as rust prevention goes. There still are a few bad apples out there and there’s no excuse for it.

@@dave1956 Both of my parents are native Californians but lived in Wausau in the early 1960s. My father told me that he had both his 1957 and 1961 Chevrolets undercoated at that time. And both of those cars had a through wax before Winter and a thorough cleaning in the Spring.

@@SpockvsMcCoy Funny you mention that. Rust typically started from within and worked it’s way out. I worked in the body shop business for 45 years and saw this firsthand. In the old days vehicle construction was such that there was inadequate drainage and the steel wasn’t properly treated and started rusting before the first payment was made. The exception was cars built in the early 70’s. My neighbor had a 1973 Caprice that started blistering after 2 winters. By the time the car was 5 years old, it was a mess. Cadillac’s of this era would rust around the side moldings and under the vinyl top. I remember working on a 1974 Impala in early 1979 that literally had no paint left on it. It was solid surface rust. The seals around the windshield and rear window would fail and water would start seeping into the trunk, accelerating the process. I owned a 1973 Buick Regal that was 3 years old at the time and water was getting into the trunk. I had the back glass pulled out and resealed, but the problem persisted. So I got into the trunk and had a friend shine a flashlight around the tail lamps. The rear body panel as it’s called (the panel welded into the body that the tail lamps mount into has lots of pinholes, rusted right through the metal. My next vehicle was a 1974 Pontiac Grand Prix. It was 2 1/2 years old and the deck lid was rusted out. It was also rusting around the rear wheels. The car was white and when you looked at the door bottoms (when the doors were open) they were solid rust. Then the domestic auto makers wondered why they lost market share at that time.

@@dave1956GM's quality control declined in the 1970s...my parent's 1976 Oldsmobile 98 had very poor quality factory metallic paint and brittle vinyl door cards.

They left out bird poop. A frequent issue on all car paints.

1959 mercury car, I know it's about the paint tests. If I could own this mercury, I certainly wouldn't do these tests it's from 1959. I don't care about improvements on the paint, but I wouldn't do these paint tests

That paint used in 1959 would be banned today by the EPA. These rediculas inviromentalist restrictions cause today's cars to fade and peel off paint in just 2 to 3 years.
