Very interesting. Mom decided on a VERY basic persimmon and white six passenger six cylinder 1959 Suburban for our family car. The total accessory list was automatic transmission, two-tone paint, white wall tires, and power steering. We had a new car, and it saved gas. No radio, no clock, no heater! I remember seeing my breath while going to school.

Hard to believe that this film is 60 years old. It doesn’t feel like it.

When I was a little kid my mom and dad had bought a new 1959 Plymouth. This is just how I remember that car. We drove it from California to Missouri with only one night in a motel in New Mexico (hurrying to family funeral). Funny the things we remember...

The voice of the martian is an actor named Arnold Stang. He was a nerd way ahead of his time. There are plenty of Arnold Stangs around today..they're called geeks today.

Love this! There's a reason why the man from Mars is promoting Plymouth here: You see, the man from Mars who goes out at night eating cars prefers to eat Cadillacs, Lincolns, Mercurys and Subarus.

My first car purchased new in 1959 from Mashak Motors in Van Nuys (Los Angeles). It was a thrill until the trunk started leaking. Dealer installed heater (optional on the Belvedere) and the core leaked all over my optional carpet. It was a convertible and the top had to be replaced after ONE YEAR fabric having worn out at seams. Good looking car but a POS! Low seats caused back issues. I stopped buying American following leaking issues on trunk again with ‘73 Dodge Dart. Of course I could have purchased a Ford with exploding gas tank.

I think so, Isaac. We had a run with new Plymouths when I was a kid. 1957 Belvedere two-door hardtop, a 1958 same, and my little brother necessitated the 1959 basic Suburban. I was very aware of the options available, but my parents did not need. The film did not feature optional interior fabrics, swivel seats, power seats, trim levels, and I believe power door locks. Radios were AM, but rear speaker was another option. Power antenna was not.

The folks who bought AMC Ramblers and a newly-created Studebaker Lark sure did. Between the two of them, they accounted for more than 1/2 a million units. That's not even counting import sales, of which Volkswagen and Renault were quickly gaining traction.

@hankaustin7091 6 жыл бұрын
Well.. maybe your lower classes wanted those cheap things.. but middle America sure didn't want that junk.. not back then anyways
@jakekaywell5972
@jakekaywell5972 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, a significant percentage of these types of buyers wanted more luxurious cars in a smaller package, which explains why AMC sold around 50,000 Ambassadors for the year and why around 40% of all Lark sales were the better equipped Lark VIII package. By the way, both of those cars cost around the same as an Oldsmobile fully loaded. The imports were more for the blue-collar worker in terms of price, undercutting the Chevrolet Biscayne by $200-$400 on average.
@hankaustin7091
@hankaustin7091 6 жыл бұрын
Well.. ok.. maybe in the neighborhoods you hung out in , but, where I lived, NO ONE drove a Studebaker and certainly not an AMC of any kind, unless you were a maid or a janitor at the high school... the lowest priced car I ever saw was a Pontiac, and that's only because there was a Pontiac dealer on the way to the Cadillac dealership downtown, and if they didn't get a Cadillac, they wanted the next best thing, a Buick. Most people I knew wanted big luxury cars, big engines and flash.. and that's what they got.

Somebody didn't watch the video at all. Like where they explained that power mirrors, sun visors, power steering, backup lights, windshield washers, variable-speed wipers, power windows, air conditioning, solar glass, a clock, and the lock on the glovebox were all options. Or are you just so poor your car doesn't have any of these?

Vi rendete conto che queste automobili avevano accessori come l'aria condizionata, i vetri elettrici, lo specchietto antiabbagliante e il dispositivo automatico per gli abbaglianti che in Europa, sarebbero arrivati nel 2000?

US-market cars all got AC standard in the 90's. Amusingly, Canada still has optional AC on their cheapest models. For example, the base model 2022 Toyota Corolla doesn't have it.
