I owned one of these back in the day. It was white with a turquoise interior. The original owner had the black strip down the side painted turquoise to match the interior making it a real standout. The 348/335hp had a 11.25:1 compression ratio making the best premium gas at the time subject to pinging. In the 9 months I owned it, I had to rebuild the transmission twice - it had a BW T10. The original design was flawed and all the teeth would pop off second gear. On top of the weak transmission, the rear end couldn't handle all those horses and I had to swap out about 3 or 4 of of them. The spider gears exploded on me the second night I owned it. Was I drag racing - sure! It seemed like that's what it was made for. I had a lot of fun with it and wish I could have kept it stored somewhere but I'd have spent a lot more than what this one sold for in storage fees over the years.

Interesting! I had a 59 Impala Sport Coup, Grecian Gray with beautiful gray and red interiour. 335 horse and factory 4 speed with 3.70 posi rear. I bought it the same day it came in as a trade in at the Oldsmobile dealer, they had not preped it yet to sell. The only problem that I found with it was the ball socket rocker arms were worn out from drag racing. The heads were pulled and all new valves, studs, springs and rockers were replaced. The real problem was that the 348 only had 35 lb oil pressure as to the 409's 65 lb oil pressure. The 348 was never a race engine as the 409 was. Still my 348 was quick in the day, 1965, I ran Mickey Thompson Specials of 8.50 by 14 on the back for traction. I have an old 1/4 mile time slip that the 348 turned 15.2 sec at 92 mph, not bad on skinny tires and weighed not quite 3,800 lbs.

With the Super Turbo Thrust 348. These ran B/stock back in 1960. They had 4 speeds available which some competitors did not. The full size 1960 Ford had a top engine of 352 ci with 360 horses called the Thunderbird 352 Super. These Fords though only came with 3 speed manuals with an optional overdrive for 4th. Would be curious to see if the full size Impala shown in this video or the Ford Galaxie would be the faster of the two? Oh BTW, Mopars in 1960 could be optioned with 383'w with long ram tube induction manifolds and 4 Carter AFB's and 345 horses I Believe. The muscle car era was just getting serious in 1960.

The 4 SD manual was NOT an option for the 1960 Impala
@kimmorrison9169 Жыл бұрын
@@kenstewart5991 from everything I’ve seen so far I believe a 4 speed was available in this model.

@kimmorrison9169 Well the 1st car I owned I got from my uncle in Fresno. It was a 2 door bubble top 60 Impala with the 320 hp single 4 barrel quad-jet carb and a 3speed manual on the column. The parts store my best friends dad owned said even a 3 speed floor shift was not an option on the Impala in 1960 , all shifting, manual or the famous 2-speed auto , "power glide" was done from the column. Bucket seats weren't even an option in the Belair/ Impala in 1960. Only the corvette came with the T-10 4-speed. Now as for what you could "special order" fitted in the factory I have no idea. I would be curious to know. One other bit of info. From the tri five to 1964 the factory fitted all chev's with the hardware installed to bolt in the clutch pedal to make for easy conversion from that worthless 2 speed automatic.
Translation: The body color and interior color are the same as the Impala I owned, but the engine was a 283 with a very small carburetor.

Stop spreading that falsehood. The 1960 Chevrolet Impala could indeed be ordered with a Borg-Warner T-10 4 speed transmission. I know because I was the 2nd owner of the one I had. The first time I floored it and tri-power slowly came in, the pedal stuck to the floor. I was completely stock from the factory without a doubt.
@kenstewart5991 Жыл бұрын
@donford1512 It could be ordered special from the factory I imagine but you couldn't go to a dealership and buy one on the lot with a 4speed. My uncle tried and got one with the 320 hp 348 single 4 barrel and 3 speed on the column. 6 years later it was the 1st car I owned. I put in the floor shift but couldn't afford alot more.
@donford1512 Жыл бұрын
@@kenstewart5991 I don't know how the previous owner acquired it but they never touched it while they had it and never raced it - as I found out when I floored it and had to reach down and pull the pedal back. It definitely came from the factory with the 4 speed and tri-power (vacuum operated). It was listed in all the books back then as 335hp. I would like to find out how many 1960s came with that engine. Someone must know. The second night I had it, I blew the spider gears in half trying to drag race a 383 HO Plymouth down the interstate. It was no contest. The Plymouth had me out of the hole and all I saw was his tail lights.
