And in Victory Circle, Junior Johnson shows the latest in high tech racing apparel, in the form of a light red Haggar button down dress shirt given to him by his brother who is an accountant.

Great to see stock cars that actually looked like real cars of the era. Of course, engines and hardware were modified and fortified, but the cars looked like something you could see on the street. Some of the drivers were even wearing short sleeved shirts! Nowadays, drivers look like they could step into an Apollo rocket to the moon.

Richard Petty was wearing a short sleeve polo shirt and Jr. Johnson was wearing a long sleeve pink dress shirt. The cars where stock except for engine mods and roll cage.

Incredible that first 500 ran caution free. All of those racers on a new track. Racers discovering how to race track as they go. Biggest purse ever. And no cautions? Miracle
@CharlesFreck
@CharlesFreck 2 жыл бұрын
Likely due to a disparity in competition. In fact, 3 of the first 4 Daytona 500s ran caution free. 1960 had notoriously bad wind which was responsible for the crashes. Additionally a lot of the guys that were pushing hard and might have crashed out in '59 blew up before they got the chance.

Intersting to me: Seems like the #3 car had it's share of late race misfortune at the 500 long before Dale Earnhardt stepped into it. Bobby Johns spinning out with a 6 sec lead with 9 laps to go is quite the heart break, it was certainly his race to win at that point and doubtful Junior Johnson would have had a chance to catch him.

Junior gets out wearing a pink dress shirt and khakis. And you know he wore it in the race, because it's sweat-stained.

Junior Johnson winning this race is probably the best individual piece of driving in NASCAR history. The 348 powered Chevy he was driving was over 10 mph slower than the 389 powered Pontiac's. He also got a bit lucky with Bobby John's rear window blowing out but Junior being in that position that late in the race is a miracle in itself. The Chevy 348 was basically a truck engine that had good low end torque but the Pontiac 389 was probably the best high performance engine there was in 1960. Ford's best high performance engine in 1960 was a 360 horsepower HiPo version of the FE 352 and I believe Dodge/Plymouth teams used either a HiPo 361 or 383 wedge in NASCAR at that time. So the Chevy's were probably the slowest cars out there until the 409 came out

That was the race he discovered drafting his draft and cause the rear window to blow out of the other car

Truck engines don't win the Daytona 500 or the other approx. 50 nascar races the 348 won including the last one in a 1962 race in a 60 model car.

In a book I read some 40+ years ago titled: 'World's Greatest Auto Races,' the 1960 Daytona 500 was one of the chapters in that book; where it cited Junior Johnson as being the first NASCAR driver to make full use of drafting in that race; which is what kept him competitive that led to his victory. Supposedly, drafting was used years before in Formula 1 Grand Prix racing, where it was referred to as _slipstreaming._

Probably "the pre-race show" for back in the day, to play up the Petty's as the favored drivers to win the 500. But 'ole Junior Johnson had other plans of course, lol.

And Lee Petty drove the entire race on one set of tires, finishing fourth. Three years later Tiny lund won by going the entire race on one set of tires. In 63 the cars were running 167 MPH, today they are less than 30 MPH faster yet they would have us believe that tire technology has not progressed enough to run the entire race on one set? If they were serious about cutting costs for the teams that would be the first thing that nascar would want. I get sooo sick of hearing how they can't go all out in order to manage the tires. I have NO interest in watching a tire management contest. If I'm going to spend my money I want to see a RACE!! If managing tires is all they are doing then they are NOT racing.

@@bretttocco5761 More action like this? What, 3/4 of the field running several laps down for most of the race? The cars racing for the lead being half a lap apart? 2/3 of the field finished more then 10 laps behind. One guy only did 155 laps. About a third of the field DNF'd due to mechanical failure. I hardly call that action packed racing. Imagine if a third of everyone in a 2021 race retired due to mechanical failure. Not even exploding with smoke or anything, they just drive into the pits like normal cause there's an issue. A third of the field just quietly drops back and exits the race without fanfare.
